Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Bark louder, little dog.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Let there be snark.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Second rate reporter says what?

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Republicans in disarray!

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

.

Look, Donald, I’m dyslexic (too), so it’s hard for me to read something out loud and not sound like a moron. That’s why, when I know I’ll have to do so, I always practice my script in advance. It’s a two-minute speech, you putz! You could’ve pre-read the thing during the commercials on your favorite Fox News shows! Get “your guys” to print it out on a big card, using Comic Sans!

Of course, the speech would still be a thuggish demand for tribute from a guy who famously can’t back up his threats, but at least you wouldn’t look like a second-grader told to read Granny’s hand-written blessing at the family Thanksgiving table…
***********

Apart from [facepalming], what’s on the agenda for the evening?

Been trying to avoid most Trump news. His antics tire me out. I had barely heard about the handshake of death, and then stuff was dribbling out about his knocking over government officials like they were bowling pins.

When is he due back? Can we oppose a travel ban?

Elsewhere. Is anyone watching “The Handmaid’s Tale?” I keep hearing and seeing insightful reviews, but have not had much time for tv recently..

I finished watching “The Exapanse” on syfy. There were a few rough spots, but overall, the series I thought was tremendously enjoyable and fascinating. I’m going to have a free day over a longish holiday weekend, and might binge watch something if it’s worthy.

@Betty Cracker: It took me a while to understand it, but once I remembered the problematic history white America has with minority success and how it’s been successfully repressed for a pretty long time, toss in some internet and it made a horrible sense. I’m conflicted. I’m mixed with a lot, but I look black enough and I’m reasonably scared of both the racists and the “failing to realized these people are as dangerous as the people with far more experience with danger are telling me”.

@schrodingers_cat: Don’t know if you saw this. Chinese movie goers love them some Aamir Khan.

Grossing 776 million yuan ($112 million) in just two and a half weeks, Bollywood blockbuster Dangal has broken the record for the most successful non-Hollywood foreign film in Chinese history. In the surprise international hit, Aamir Khan stars as a stern father who teaches his daughters to wrestle, breaking gender stereotypes in a country with strict expectations for young women.

This isn’t the first time that Khan has caught the attention of Chinese film-goers. Back in 2009, he starred in the Indian comedy 3 Idiots, which has been credited with breaking down “China’s Great Bollywood Wall.” He also starred in the sci-fi film PK, which came out in 2015 and previously held the record for the highest grossing Indian movie at the Chinese box office.

A local Los Angeles digital broadcast channel has started to show Indian films in the evening (previously movie trailers and music video shorts were far more common). Unfortunately, there do not appear to be English subtitles.

Fails to endorse article 5 of Nato Charter, shoves PM of Montenegro and then this:

“The Germans are evil, very evil,” Trump reportedly complained in the meeting, attendees told German newspaper Der Spiegel. “Look at the millions of cars they sell in the U.S. We’ll stop that.”

Some are saying he said “bad” as opposed to “evil.”

Suspicions confirmed: It’s Jared Kushner that the FBI is investigating for Russian connections.

The same Jared Kushner that accompanied Trump in a meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu to the exclusion of the National Security Advisor and the Secretary of State.

The same Jared Kushner that is going to bring peace to the Middle East and reorganize the federal government.

Trump has said he wants to hire Flynn back. He failed to explicitly back NATO’s Article 5 today and said nothing about Russia. He never says anything bad about Russia.

And that doesn’t include the emoluments and all the other dishonesty Trump is perpetrating.

It’s time to inundate Congress, particularly the Republicans, with demands that the President’s flouting of the law and insulting the citizens of this country stop.

There’s an expose of the practices of Jared’s apartment rental company in the NYT mag. Cases of hounding tenants who had never rented from his company, years after they had vacated, some who had legally ended their lease with permission from the previous owner, years before Jared bought the units.

Going after “women who work,” single parents, spouses of the deceased, for years. Expense far exceeding what they might have owed. Getting judgements that included Kushner Co.’s legal fees and then attaching the wages of a working mother.

Cases of maintenance failures, unlivable conditions. Distressed housing that Jared bought up in the rust belt or where there is no low income housing program, bought not for appreciation but for cash flow.

“Kushner’s largest concentration of multifamily units is in the Baltimore area, where the company controls 15 complexes in all — which, if you assume three residents per unit, could be home to more than 20,000 people.”

5,500 of the multifamily units he owns in the Baltimore area were bought with $371 million in financing from Freddie Mac, the government-backed mortgage lender.

I don’t see them helping him out here, unless it personally enriches them (which is entirely possible), and maybe even then.

If they don’t help him they’re dead meat now. If they do help him, they’re probably dead meat later.

But it undermines the value of having a super-thin laptop if you have to use a clunky outboard USB drive. This is my fundamental problem with Apple’s design aesthetic. They want to have a super-minimal design, but they’ve pursued it beyond its logical conclusion. They’ve eliminated so much stuff from the inside of the computer that you wind up having to buy clunky add-ons to get the features you want, spoiling the elegance of the design.

the flip function works well. BUT, even the 10.1″ version, it is noticeably heavier and thicker (because of the keyboard) than a tablet. i don’t think i’d want it as my only tablet. i think you really need to handle one in person before you make the jump, esp since the new one is even bigger at 12.5″.

@Mnemosyne: After scanning all the replies to your query, but not looking for replies-to-replies ….

    (1) I’ve had a first-gen ASUS Chromebook Flip since …. well, just about when it came out (2yr)

    (2) I LOVE IT. Unlike others, I find that it’s perfectly usable as a tablet, and no longer bother to keep my Nook HD+ charged. Heck, I think I’ve lost the charging cable.

    (3) The internal SSD (actually eMMC fwiw) was kinda small. Happily, there’s a microSD port, and I stuffed in a 128G microSD card — no problemo.

    (4) Not that you’d want to do this, BUT …. there’s a “developer mode” where you can get a “real shell”, and in there you can run a script called “crouton” that can install “real Ubuntu” on your disk (or (heh heh) that microSD card). When it’s all done, you can fire up your favorite desktop and just switch over with a multi-key-chord-stroke. And back, of course.

    (5) I’m a 20th century guy, with 20th century thumbs. This “typing emails on your phone” … *barbaric*. Before getting this Flip, I INVARIABLY carried my laptop, b/c shit, even if I use the smartphone for tethering, I NEED a real keyboard to send anything other than a two-line email (!!!!!) But with this flip, I often just carry the Flip, and don’t bother with the lappie. B/c unless I’m doing real development, it JUST AIN’T NECESSARY. And that’s with the cramped keyboard and all. I can only guess that the new model’s keyboard is sufficiently larger thatn I wouldn’t even find the keyboard cramped.

    (6) The default configuration (difficult to break out of, on purpose ;-) is very safe — every time it reboots, it reverifies the O.S., etc, etc. I think that’s a good thing, for people who don’t want to worry about the detalis of computer security.

    (6) OK. So I bought mine for $250. That was sweet, b/c while a little pricey, it was certainly within the range of a nice (ok, -nice-nice-, I’m a cheapskate) meal for two. It’s nice that I can walk around with it, and because it’s secure, I don’t worry about losing it, and because it’s cheap, *ditto*.

At $500, I’m not sure point #6 still applies. But I’m betting the others still do.

You, sir or madam, are engaged in the unauthorized practice of law.

I can read. Famous case in Massachusetts in the late 70s. Governor Ed King depicted as a clown in full getup, editorial cartoon by Paul Szep in the Boston Globe. He sued Szep and the paper. Lost at every level up to the state Supreme Judicial Court, unanimously. Same court that later decided Goodridge.

ETA: ‘Fie wuz Breathed, I’d mail Kantrowitz a five dollar bill, with a letter saying this is the fee for use of the image.
But that’s me. As you note, I’m practicing law without a license.

    @schrodingers_cat:

Why not just get a 13 inch Dell XPS.

*If* you’re ok with Chrome as your “world”, the biggest reason I’d suggest that a Chromebook is better, is this: for many people, they “just” need the Web. And for that, the “locked-down” nature of the Chromebook is just safer. [Per the question I asked about why otherwise-indubitably-intelligent people use Winders] Lots of people would have difficulty installing and maintaining a Linux distro on their laptop. That -is- effectively what ChromeOS is. So …. if you can deal with the environment, you’re getting something that’s simply safer, and maintained/managed by a company that has an interest in keeping it safe.

ETA: two more things: (1) for -me-, the safety of a Chromebook is -nil-. I maintain lots of Unix boxes. (2) But the “flip” is …. oh man, I so would like that for my main laptop.

I’m also amusing myself thinking of Trudeau and Macron chatting away in French about Trump (maybe Belgium too).

Serious question: Does Donald Trump know, even at a 10th-grade level, any language other than English? (Yeah, yeah, does he even know English?)

Melania is reputed to be at least somewhat fluent in, I think it is five different languages. I’ve never heard that DT has even a passing familiarity with any other language.

We don’t play games, we don’t do art.

Even there, I think there are significant differentials. I play, every day, six solitaire card games, the NYT crossword, and five on-line word/anagram puzzles. But in no sense would I refer to myself as a “gamer.” As for art, I confess I have a few iPad apps that are essentially glorified coloring books, mandala makers, and similar. Every now and then I’ll go on a tear and devote half a day to designing pretty patterns. But serious art? No, not really.

Speaking only for myself, I don’t really have a problem with that. With the right software, you can create an image of the DVD on your laptop and run it from the computer’s memory (which has the advantage of not using the battery up as fast as running a DVD drive). I use the DVD drive so rarely that the tradeoff in weight, etc. seems to be massively in my favor. But of course that’s a YMMV thing (and I was a little annoyed by it at first, I admit).

@Mnemosyne: I have a Samsung Chromebook which I got earlier this year–can’t recall the model just now. It’s done ok so far for what I wanted, which is basic word processing. The keyboard is smaller than many laptops, but I have small hands so it isn’t really a struggle to use. There are a few things I find irritating (diacritals, goddammit!) but for what I paid it’s adequate for my purposes.
