Of course it was for show. Trump understands nothing about anything. Like NATO and how he keeps spouting about “money pouring in”. It’s become clear that if democracy means racial and gender equality then Republicans simply don’t want democracy.
…
Given the choice between dictatorship based on propaganda/voter suppression and the end of white supremacy, they’ve chosen dictatorship.
…
I feel this is no longer a contest between two opposing points of view both interested in a democratic state.
…
But rather a contest between a majority that wants a free democracy based on equal protection/equal power under the law and a well-funded,
…
deeply-entrenched, angry minority that will cling to power by any means necessary including the death of democracy in America.
…
Voter suppression laws
State-run propaganda like Breitbart
The dismissal of democratic norms
…
These are the marks of dictatorships.
…
A party interested in democracy would not allow them. Democracy is an agreement in which power is given by consent of the governed.
…
The ruthless disenfranchisement of the governed, the relentless pursuit of disinformation — these are core values of the Republican Party.
…
It has become nothing but a blunt tool of power exercised by (mostly) wealthy, (mostly) white, (mostly) men to maintain a hierarchy.
…
And it is now clear that if the majority wants this hierarchy end, well, they’ll simply bypass the majority and destroy democracy itself.
…
In other words, they’d rather have their racism than freedom.
…
Which is ironic, given that America’s original sin was always the racism which allowed slavery.
…
It may be the very thing that destroys us.

There’s no enforcement, it’s entirely voluntary.
That’s what’s so utterly ridiculous about this whole posturing festival. The United States voluntarily agreed to cut emissions and meet certain standards, numbers that it came up with itself.
It was a statement of agreement with the world that we’d all make changes to slow climate change, and each country stated what it agreed to do. So all that this amounts to today is a statement by the US saying no, we don’t agree to do this anymore. I don’t mean that it won’t have any effect, stating that we as a country don’t take the issue seriously is incredibly damaging in many ways. But the whole story that it was a “deal” where other countries got the better of the US, all that is a charade.
This is Trump playing to his base, which he seems to be frantically turning to because he feels under siege.

White House eyes Bannon ally for top broadcasting post.
With sweeping new powers, the position would oversee public media reaching 100 countries.

The Trump administration’s leading candidate to head the Broadcasting Board of Governors, a position that with recent changes would give the single person unilateral power over the United States’ government messaging abroad reaching millions, is a conservative documentarian with ties to White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, according to two people with direct knowledge of the situation.
Michael Pack, the leading contender for the post, is currently president and CEO of the Claremont Institute and publisher of its Claremont Review of Books, a California-based conservative institute that has been called the “academic home of Trumpism” by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Thus far, Donald Trump has:
– Invited the Russian foreign minister and a probable Russian spy/recruiter into the Oval at Putin’s request…
Joy ReidVerified account @JoyAnnReid
He gave the Russians in the Oval previously secret information identifying a third party country’s infiltration of ISIS.

He then identified that third party country, Israel, on camera, while standing beside the Israeli prime minister.

He all but repudiated NATO, refused to recommit to Article V, shoved the leader of new NATO country Montenegro and slagged Germany.
Joy ReidVerified account @JoyAnnReid
He put on display the very fracturing of the Western alliance that Putin has dreamed of for decades.

@Mnemosyne: California isn’t missing and the map distorts land mass size to reflect population, so the Bay Area is huge as is New Jersey and Long Island. But the point remains, there aren’t actually Red States and Blue States. Any separation would be very, very painful and messy.

@hedgehog mobile: will need to create a corridor across Grand Canyon National Park and the Hopi and Navajo Nations to link NM and CO. Let’s get ‘er done.

@magurakurin:
The Los Angeles-San Diego megapolis has a much larger population than the Bay Area, so I’m confused as to why it’s shown as being so much smaller. I get what they’re trying to represent, but it seems weird to show one of the largest population centers in the United States as a tiny appendix.

@Mnemosyne: it’s maybe just how you are looking at the map, but the big mass of blue below the line of purple/red that separates it from the Bay Area is LA. The tiny appendix at the bottom is San Diego.

@Omnes Omnibus: Oh, that’s nothing. I got a 12 hour time out for calling Corey Lewandowski a fascist fuck.
Terminating the vile life of Bannon would be like killing Heydrich before he convened the Wannsee Conference. A preemptive termination of an inevitable war criminal.

@Mnemosyne: If we can get Washington to go along AND get the Bangor Naval Base on our side, Cascadia will be a nuclear power.
Stuff it up your ass, Donald.

@magurakurin:
I believe Trump will live to 90 just to spite us.

@Jeffro: Province of California, etc. would be easier to pronounce…

@Corner Stone: are you just having fun or do you really not get that it is a traditional saying? It’s just a way to say go away and don’t come back, like go jump off a cliff. It’s also a very common saying, I can’t believe you haven’t heard it before and understood it.

@PST: You have to work hard at it. I have not watched a news program since “election day”. It was difficult at first, but now seems normal. I no longer tolerate stupid from my fellow citizens, I jam the truth right in their faces. I don’t listen to my customers talking politics any longer….none of this is “normal” for me….it’s what I have to do to survive. WASF is my new mantra. So DEPRESSING!

@Jeffro: Gotta have the Keystone State – with some serious population exchange. Cleveland for Erie, Cincinnati for Harrisburg (to keep the AFC North in the same nation), Louisville for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. State College PA for Morgantown WV. Rest of Pennsyltucky can vote with its feet. Chip off the Mountaineer panhandles: eastern is near a ‘burb of DC anyway, northern so Cole won’t have to move. Take NoVA & the run to Richmond & Norfolk /NNews & leave the rest. That oughta do it for starters. Resultant bloodshed probably somewhere between Greece/Turkey 1923 & South Asia 1947.
