    Well, aside from continuing the diminishment of our stature in the world yet again and for the first time since our founding leaving the U.S. behind the Vatican in adhering to scientific findings, I actually don’t think Trump pulling us out of the Paris Accord will have much impact. Renewable/sustainable energy production has turned the corner for economic viability, everyone else on the planet is on board, and businesses plan with an eye towards the long long term. So, yeah Trump’s an ass and this stinks but it’s sound & fury signifying nothing. Oh and conceding the next several decades/century to China/Germany as leaders.

    That’s what’s so utterly ridiculous about this whole posturing festival. The United States voluntarily agreed to cut emissions and meet certain standards, numbers that it came up with itself.

    It was a statement of agreement with the world that we’d all make changes to slow climate change, and each country stated what it agreed to do. So all that this amounts to today is a statement by the US saying no, we don’t agree to do this anymore. I don’t mean that it won’t have any effect, stating that we as a country don’t take the issue seriously is incredibly damaging in many ways. But the whole story that it was a “deal” where other countries got the better of the US, all that is a charade.

    This is Trump playing to his base, which he seems to be frantically turning to because he feels under siege.

    Trump can weaken the US NDC, without penalty. He can roll back all of Obama’s carbon regulations, without penalty. He can simply fail to meet the targets of the NDC, without penalty. All he has to do is explain himself at the five-year review, and the explanation can be as minimal as he likes.

    Paris’s only constraint on Trump comes through intangibles like reputation and influence. It imposes absolutely no practical or legal constraint on his actions—not on trade policy, not on domestic energy policy, nothing.

    That means all talk of Paris being a “bad deal” for the US, or hurting US trade, or affecting the US coal industry in any way, is nonsense. Paris does not and cannot do any of those things. The US voluntarily offered up an NDC and can voluntarily offer up a different or weaker NDC any time it wants.

    This is an awkward fact for the nationalist contingent. They need Paris to be a boogey man. So they’ve ginned up a novel legal argument.

    The things it mentions that it can have an effect on, reputation and influence, these Trump’s actions today will most definitely damage, badly.

    In the end, pulling out of an accord that has had no impact on jobs but claiming he has reduced jobs is a win. But it will bite them in the ass since they no longer can blame those tree hugging liberals for taking away jobs due to their silly concerns about climate change. What they’ll do when those jobs still aren’t there, idk.

    As for the “renegotiation” if they take 50 million from that green fund and put it in his pocket, I’m sure he’ll jump right back into it, as long as they rename it the mar-a-largo accords.

    There’s always been a core of advisors that wanted this outcome. But if not for the events of the last few weeks I think we’d have remained in the Paris accord. Trump got into a growing fight with Europe. France rejected Bannon’s favorite Le Pen. He met with and got disrespected and criticized by the leaders of NATO and the EU. He got mad. Both Merkel and Macron spoke about him as a bully and a child. Macron has happily spoken publicly about over-manning Trump when they met in person.

    This isn’t about climate and it isn’t about Trump’s base. It’s about sticking it to the leaders of Europe. That’s what gave the Bannonites the edge. That and one other thing.

    Trump is scared. He’s entering a a widening gyre of political crisis over Russia. He’s scared and he’s angry and he needs friends. So he’s more and more likely to hug his base – both the most aggressive advisors and the most committed supporters. He’s trying to bring back Corey Lewandowski, his wildest and most troubling-driving advisor who has the unshakable loyalty and lickspittledom Trump now requires. Indeed, we can take it as a given that as the Russia scandal crisis deepens Trump will become more aggressive and more extreme in his policies both to maintain his emotional equilibrium and reinforce his backing from a shrinking base of supporters. This is as certain as night follows day.

The Northern Irish want to stay in the EU as well (by a lower margin) but they also don’t want to sever connections with the U.K. They also want to preserve the more-or-less open border they have with Ireland and the other attributes of the Good Friday Agreement and other accords they’ve worked out since. There’ll have to be subsequent negotiations with both Scotland and Northern Ireland if and when the idiotic Brexit actually comes about.

Doing a few laps would probably have taken the edge off and given them a chance to bond as they recovered. I just don’t think piers and walking really go together very well.

    Since we’re being pedantic, of course you can talk a long walk on a short pier – you can go back and forth and back and forth for as long as you want. You just can’t walk very far from your starting point.

That size pier just doesn’t lend itself to any kind of practical exercise or walking. I still say a bridge or similar construct gives the correct opportunity for a lengthy walk.     The length of the walk is not constrained by the size of the area where you’re walking, unless it’s so small that you can’t turn around. It’s generally a lot less interesting if you have to keep covering the same ground, but that has no effect on the length of the walk. It’s the same principle as swimming 1,500 meters in a 50-meter pool.
