Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Everybody saw this coming.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Petty moves from a petty man.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Not too surprisingly, the responses to my earlier request are few, and some of the responders live quite a distance away. I think what I’ll do is set something up with O. Felix Culpa and let you know about it. That will probably be next week or later.

I reckon this is what would happen if I tried to organise a Balloon-Juice meetup here in Kuala Lumpur. So, I feel your pain.

@Amir Khalid: at least no one would complain about the restaurant that you chose:-)

I would love to do a Santa Fe or Albuquerque meet up when I’m there in February. Have been spending the month there since 2011. Had the pleasure of having breakfast with O. Felix Culpa and drinks with Albuquerque’s dexwood and his lovely bride on my last visit. BTW, where is dexwood? Haven’t seen him comment in a long time.

My wife and I plan on visiting Santa Fe and Taos, and visiting the local 4WD roads, the last week of July, if that happens to coincide with a meet up.

Maybe we can have a meetup when there is a triggering event, like Quinerly’s visit.

@Cheryl Rofer: If the Bobcat Bite was still in business, I’d make the trip. I know they moved downtown and changed the name, but there was something special about that old roadhouse.

PS: If you’re in Taos next week, the Odenbear Theatre is doing one of my plays as part of the Bench Plays series June 14-25.

There was a Santa Fe meet-up planned? When? I am coming down to the area first week in August to meet my sister, who used to live in Pecos. I would love to have some face-time with some jackals then! Just a hint for the future

@Amir Khalid: If I make it to Malaysia (outside shot of it happening next year), I will give you a shout :) For now, I am in Taipei, which is about as close as a Juicer is to you right now, if I had to guess!

    @Mustang Bobby:
New location sucks and I love downtown Santa Fe. Just not the same. Not worth the effort when you have all the other great food options. I can be an odd duck, though. Never saw the attraction to Harry’s, though. What say, you??

Poco, the traveling dog, and I love meeting Balloon Juicers! Had a blast with dexwood…his wife is incredibly interesting. Hope to spend more time with O Felix Culpa on the next trip. Turned out we had mutual friends/acquaintances in the Madrid/Cerrillos/Galisteo communities.

I’m in! When I return from Spain, that is. So far I’ve walked the Camino del Norte from San Sebastian to Santander. I expect to reach Comillas before my time runs out and I return to the States via Bilbao/Madrid/NYC/ABQ.

@Quinerly: The same; the last time I was there it was lousy with tourists. I lived in Santa Fe the winter of ’77-’78 and was a liftee at the Ski Basin, sharing a tiny house on Galisteo Street with a guy who went on to have — and still does — a career as a political reporter for NY Times. We had to scrap together funds to shop at Kaune’s and the Piggly-Wiggly, but it was a good time and we were regulars at the Bobcat. When I lived in Albuquerque (’95-’01) I came up on a regular basis because I have relatives living there. Right now I’d love a Blake’s Lottaburger green chile cheeseburger with fries and a side of Lipitor.

On a slightly different topic, since all the Trumpistas are playing the Pittsburgh v. Paris meme today, it is good to remember that his is an “alternative fact.” Allegheny County (Pittsburgh is within this county), went to Clinton (56%) over Trump (40%). So, no, he screwed Pittsburgh to. http://www.politico.com/2016-election/results/map/president/pennsylvania/

    @Mustang Bobby:
My first rental casita in SF in 2011 was on Galisteo. Love that area and if I could afford to buy, that’s where I’d land. Big fan of Del Charro, which was an easy walk. Only in Harry’s once…that year…just didn’t get why everyone raved about it. Met a blind date there (my first at age 50 and last). He was a transplant and ate there 4 times a week. Had lived in SF for 6 years and had never been to Museum Hill, any of the downtown museums, La Fonda. Think he remarked he had only been to The Plaza once. I still shake my head at that 30 minute “date.” But, I digress….

@Quinerly: Greetings! Stroll is good, although almost done. Taking a rest day before moving on to Santanilla del Mar. Sleep in albergues can be difficult, so a hotel stay now and then is recommended. The landscape on the northern coast of Spain is magnificent, with some amazing beaches. I’m soaking it all in (pun intended) before returning to my beautiful but landlocked New Mexico.

If I didn’t have to work 8 out of the next 10 days while trying to start my first semester in NP school, I’d make the 3hr drive to hang with you guys. I’d love a “Sweet Baby Greens” salad with a side of grilled Tofu and and one of those Lime Pepita Refrescas they make at Vinaigrette. Ummmm…..

@O. Felix Culpa: Just ate at Harry’s Wednesday. Some of the best moussaka I’ve ever had, tbh. I think it’s quite good and love the garden patio but the intense devotion is probably a little much. Jambo, however, is fuckin awesome.

A day late and a dollar short, I know, but I could drive to Santa Fe on almost any given day — but Albuquerque would be much more convenient.

Okay – Some good restaurant suggestions. One exception: I love Vinaigrette’s food, hate, hate, hate their parking.

    O. Felix Culpa and I will decide when she gets back, and I’ll publish the results of our deliberations.
