Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Come on, man.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

You cannot shame the shameless.

This really is a full service blog.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

The revolution will be supervised.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Omg Michael Bloomberg offers to pay the share of the #ParisAgreement To the UN that Trump is pullin out. 15 mil! https://t.co/IVZLHL5Ku2

— Bobby Hall (@BobbyTBD) June 2, 2017

… The US would have been required to contribute that amount towards efforts to prevent catastrophic climate change under the historic agreement between 195 countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions…

The billionaire philanthropist added: “Americans will honour and fulfil the Paris agreement by leading from the bottom up — and there isn’t anything Washington can do to stop us.”…

Also on Thursday, The New York Times cited a letter from Mr Bloomberg to UN Secretary-General António Guterres in which the businessman said other elements of US government and society should take the lead on climate change where Mr Trump had failed to do so.

Mr Bloomberg is a UN special envoy for local leaders, tasked with meeting the Paris climate targets…

My translation: “Since I’m an actual self-made NYC billionaire, Donny, we both know how much your bigly Rich Guy bafflegab is just fronting for the flyover rubes. Here’s my couch-cushion money, so you can pay today’s tab and stop embarrassing us in front of the rest of the world, okay?”

Earth needing a gofundme is even more depressing tbh https://t.co/dEtHEcAWWX

Strange days. A buddy’s MiL recently died and he’s vowed to never again be dragged to his Orange County BiL’s, as they’re unrepentant Trumpers and RW assholes decades prior.

Interestingly, this MiL was a girl in Germany coerced into joining the Hitler Youth and whose mother was jailed after being reported to the authorities for saying something disrespectful about herr Hitler.

One quick note, post-‘March for Truth’: I hope the next one is a ‘March for Shame’, with five million people carrying enlarged pictures of GOP House members’ faces up to Capitol Hill. That would be awesome and seems to be the next logical step, as there’s certainly more than enough out there by now about Trumpov and his gang of looters to have them all drawn and quartered.

(I got there a little late today…my fat, heavy wallet from the morning’s garage sale was slowing me down…=)

Anyway, good people and a good time, but let’s have next time be a day when Congress is in session and let’s surround the Capitol with pictures of their own ugly mugs and SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! posters for the viewers back home.

    TOILET PAPER!!

    flippin love it

The initial distribution will aim at low and medium income markets and will be competitively priced, Battaglia says. A preliminary marketing image of the product packaging shows a cartoon character giving a thumbs-up, spotting Trump’s signature hairstyle, with the slogan “Softness without borders” and “This is how you can support migrants.” On the back of the package, an image of toilet paper rolls stacked up together is the background to the slogan “This is the wall we are going to pay for.”

Battaglia pledged 30 percent of the profits to well-established non-profit organizations that offer legal advice to migrants and deportees, so “as to fight back unjust immigration policies and red tape”, he explains. By helping people in need, he believes the product can make customers “feel great again.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and his GOP allies on Capitol Hill have made it through nearly half their first year in power without a single major legislative achievement. If that’s going to change, it will have to start soon, a reality that Republican lawmakers will confront when they return to the Capitol on Monday from a weeklong break.

“We just need to work harder,” said the second-ranking Republican senator, John Cornyn of Texas, in an interview with KFYO radio in Lubbock, Texas, over the recess.

wish Republicans would just be honest about their evil. Enough of this shit about patriotism, religious freedom, and small government. Just be loud and proud. Of course, they would never win another election if they were honest, so I can see why they lie.

You think more highly of Republican voters than I do.

As long as the alternative to Republican* evil is living in a multicultural society, tolerant of others and striving for true equality for all, the Republican brand is safe.

I think the candidacy of Trump proves this on a national stage, but other unsavory Republicans, like Jesse Helms, were doing this for decades before Trump.

    * Evil is what Republicans are proposing. There is no religion, or moral philosophy, which I can think of that views a ruler(s), who takes from the poorest to give more wealth and power to his already wealthy friends as anything but evil.

Indeed. It’s gonna be a long slog.

On those days when starting to seem a little too exhausting, I remember Sarah Kendzior’s good advice:

You still have your freedom, so use it. There are many groups organizing for both resistance and subsistence, but we are heading into dark times, and you need to be your own light. Do not accept brutality and cruelty as normal even if it is sanctioned. Protect the vulnerable and encourage the afraid. If you are brave, stand up for others. If you cannot be brave – and it is often hard to be brave – be kind.

I have to admit I’m a little surprised by Bloomberg’s action, I wouldn’t have expected it of him. He seems so conservative so often, and then he does something generous and forward thinking like this.

Was it mostly to slap Trump for shaming his nation? Maybe so. Trump certainly deserves it, $15 million dollars, seems like a lot more than pocket change to me, but I guess to a real billionaire it is small change. I had no idea it was that small a sum Trump was going on about. It points out how embarrassing it is for Trump to basically spit on the rest of the world.

Hoping Trump is more angry than ever before now!

So, just watched Niki Haley say that President Trump does in fact believe that the world is getting warmer and a contributing factor is pollutants. Of course the key word here is “pollutants”. “Clean” coal will have the pollutants removed, but still pump CO2 into the air when burned. I hate their attempts to mislead with “clever” wording even more than their straight if lies.

(Oh, and Bloomberg endorsed Hillary and gave a speech at the Democratic convention. Trump wouldn’t ask him to serve on any commission and Bloomberg wouldn’t serve even if he was asked. They hate each other.)

It’s a good deed, and some righteous trolling — Bloomberg deserves thanks for thumbing his nose at Trump on this and many other occasions.

But honestly, it also worries me — does he have ulterior motives? He vowed to run for president if Sanders had been the nominee, and he stands to the right of where the Democratic party is in 2017. Is he positioning himself for a run for president in 2020? We don’t need another centrist politician, especially one who is a billionaire.

I welcome his work and money on the environment and in hammering at Trump. But he’s not a great, or even good, standard bearer for the progressive movement.

Maybe I’m too suspicious and cynical right now.

@Calouste: Bloomberg is pro-Wall Street, pro stop-and-frisk, pro-school privatization, anti-teacher union, and embraces a neocon foreign policy. To be fair, there are some democrats who share similar positions, but there are a lot fewer of those now than, say, 20 years ago.

@SatanicPanic: This is a good point — I knew he thinks Trump is a tool, but I didn’t know that one of his interests was fighting climate change. I hope you’re right that there is nothing more to it!
