Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

In my day, never was longer.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

No one could have predicted…

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

This fight is for everything.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Michael Tracey tweeted Maxine Waters "shoved" him. Here's the video. This is what he is calling a shove. pic.twitter.com/5LXc59eOcE

— Zachary Fedell ???? (@zatchry) June 3, 2017

Michael Tracey is a professional True Leftist, one of the guys encouraging others to vote for Donald Trump after St. Bernie was cruelly robbed of his presidential crown. Rep. Maxine Waters is a lady not known for her accommodating temper, currently leader-such-as-there-is of the IMPEACH TRUMP NAOW forces. Ergo, it was impossible for MT to resist getting up in MW’s grille…

Here's the full @MaxineWaters @mtracey interview. Sensitive viewers, you are warned. pic.twitter.com/gyU2pw6FdD

— Tommy Christopher (@tommyxtopher) June 3, 2017

Alas, it turns out that getting the international talk-to-the-hand gesture from a lady twice his age and half his size scored poor Mr. Tracey zero martyrdom points…

Maxine Waters body slammed me and broke my glasses. Well, ok, she kind of brushed past me. But it hurt like hell. https://t.co/8I0AV9w5aG

— jelani cobb (@jelani9) June 3, 2017

Be kind, a 90-year-old grandmother of five also lightly brushed past him in the Duane Reade as he was buying painkillers for his injuries

— Sady Doyle (@sadydoyle) June 4, 2017

Shocking that a white dude would falsely claim the black person was violent. https://t.co/KuGYwuqJdN

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) June 3, 2017

One can only hope the ACA provides coverage for “ego damage via social media”…

Trump can unleash the full force of Fox, fringe, & fake news media on me all he wants. I'm not going anywhere! #getreadyforimpeachment

— Maxine Waters (@MaxineWaters) June 3, 2017

Apart from cruel mockery, what’s on the agenda for the end of the weekend?

He is many other awful things as well. If the press had taken Tracey’s advice, there would’ve been no reporting on Trump/Kushner/Flynn/Sessions affinity for all things Russian (and their collective amnesia re meetings with Russians). His takes on these subjects as well as anti-semitism (denies it’s problem in the US) have rendered his twitter feed hard to distinguish from Richard Spencer’s.

Looks to be slim pickings on Netflix this month (of course there are always things which show up unannounced, so hope springs eternal).

Shimmer Lake at first blush suggests it might offer up some Fargo-esque dark humor. Coming to the ‘flix on June 9.

For those with the service and who have never seen it, My Left Foot available this month.

reposted from below because trump as “first responder”
Mike Allen of Axios, which he and Jim Van deHei started because Politico was not– judging from this– pathetic enough

President Trump was like a first responder, quickly retweeting a Drudge headline before details were confirmed: “Fears of new terror attack after van ‘mows down 20 people’ on London Bridge.”

if my house ever burns down, or the years of cured meats and potato chips catch up with me (I’ve reformed, a bit), I hope the firefighters/paramedics stop to check drudge
Because I always try to be fair here’s some more context. I don’t think it helps:

Then he went political (with critics pouncing on his use of “ban”): “We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!”
Only after that did he go personal: “Whatever the United States can do to help out in London and the U. K., we will be there – WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!”

so he went, and the he goes, and those nasty critics were all, pouncing, very nasty
and because he learned in journalism school, or maybe from a bad movie about journalism, that one should always try to include ‘local color’, Mike used some British

It targeted average blokes out partying on the weekend

Holy god, Larry Fucking Sabato is calling out CNN for false equivalence

‘Get out of the studio’: Professor reams CNN hosts for ‘false equivalency’ on both parties fostering violence
“You can’t characterize an entire half of this country!” Harlow complained.
“First of all, it’s not half of the country,” Sabato shot back. “You’ve got Republicans, Democrats and independents. But Republicans support it because it’s promoted by their side, by their president and by other people associated with the Republican Party.”
    …
“The chairman of the Democratic Party, Tom Perez, is now swearing regularly,” Berman remarked. “I know swearing isn’t hitting. But he’s purposefully using naughty words to make his point. So Democrats see an advantage here too, don’t they.”
“You’re pointing to one example and saying both parties were involved,” Sabato replied. “However, this is more of the false equivalency that you all have been correctly criticized for and other news media outlets have been correctly criticized for during the election.”

I listened to an episode of Revisionist History, Malcolm Gladwell’s new podcast, where he talks about the phenomenon of “moral licensing.” Short version is, if one minority is allowed to break through, it’s quite common for people to then decide that they don’t have to let go of their prejudices because, hey, this one woman/Black/brown/LGBT person got elected, so now misogyny/racism/homophobia is over and everyone has to shut up about it!

It’s a very interesting, if depressing, listen. For all of Gladwell’s faults (and he has many), he has always been sympathetic towards women.

It wasn’t even about the physical brush off. He needed to be in control but she didn’t let him. Refusing to answer his questions, a strong black woman told him what the subject was instead.

An actual journalist could have shifted his mind to ask her about that. But instead he had to force dominance, so next he tried to control the physical space and make her answer. She didn’t let him.

So then he tried to control the interaction by changing his news story to “she didn’t conduct herself right.” (Calling it an interview although it wasn’t. And he already had an actual story, the quotes she gave him.)

As his story was rejected on twitter, he tried to keep control by defining her for hours: “erratic, intemperate, ridiculous, flailing, agitated, angrily, stormed off, shoved, pushed, swatted, no reason, unprofessional, extremely suspect, initiated physical contact, escalated physical contact, no justification.”

    the database break-ins

Try to keep up; the current HRC line (which has the advantage of being correct) is that the DNC was legitimately utterly incompetent at IT and the databases they generated, protected, and maintained were full of bad data and poorly managed.

Incomptence really isn’t something you can harness. DWS was one of Obama’s several gifts to Tr45.

Can’t remember if I shared this here already: last weekend I went to a Memorial Day protest in Inglewood (pressing the Inglewood PD to release info on the killing of Kisha Michael and Marquintan Sandlis.) It was a Memorial Day event and I was there with WP4BL to support BLM.)

The one and only, Maxine Waters was the guest speaker. Our aim was to just stand there holding signs and not do anything disruptive. The leader of the event asked all current/former service members to stand so they could pass the mic around and let each person quickly tell where/when they served. Most of them were great. There was one guy, however, who got a bit froggy. White dude (of course) in camos, who said something like “Joe Bloe, US Army. I was called in during the LA Riots. When the police couldn’t stop them, the Army did.” He got a mix of muted applause and some disapproving groans. Anyways, we had a member of our group who was a veteran so our group urged her to get in the queue to speak. She put down her protest sign (still wearing a W4BL shirt) and did so. The mic passed around her a couple times and it became clear that the MC was purposefully avoiding giving the mic to her. This upset us so one protestor (a black man who is very active on police reform) walked up towards the front and started raising his voice asking why the group wasn’t letting this veteran speak. Organizers came over and started trying to usher him away but Maxine stepped in, told them to leave him alone and asked the protestor to come up onto the stage and had him sit next to her.

Finally our vet got to speak and said that in addition to all the people who have fallen in action/service, she was also hear to pay tribute to the two people killed by the Inglewood PD over a year ago and to demand answers and justice.

When Maxine spoke she started by saying that she appreciated our presence and hears our concerns. She said hugged our protestor and said “When I see him, I see my child. I see my family. I see our community. And they have a right to be angry.” She then promised to meet with BLM after her speech and to do everything she could to press the Mayor and PD on this issue.

She then gave her written speech which was a bit more boiler-plate freedom, service, country etc. But very good, funny, moving. Afterwards she closed by talking about the importance of activism and speaking up and pushing our officials. She asked everyone their to stand up and give applause to the protestors. Applause!!! (jaw drop.) Nearly everyone except for a handful (including white camo-dude, of course) stood and applauded. Afterwards she strolled over with BLM protestors to the shade of a jacaranda trees and talked with them for 20 minutes or so. She seemed sincerely interested in helping the cause and was friendly, warm, engaged with the group. It was quite sight to behold and a very inspiring experience.
