Sunday Morning Open Thread

There are many windows for Ric and Zooey to look out, and now it’s warm enough for them to be open. They particularly like this one.

The Orange One is tweeting again, so that and the aftermath of the London attack will take up too much of my Twitter feed.

In news you can use, this article contains a good list of how to call BS on big data. Samples:

Upon encountering a piece of information, in any form, ask, “Who is telling me this? How does he or she know it? What is he or she trying to sell me?”

Remember that if a data-based claim seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Watch out for unfair comparisons.

Much more good advice at the link.

I’m going to try to limit my internet intake today. Just fed up with so much of it. Will practice piano, work on another post, maybe scan some family photos. You?

Meeting my regular Sunday group at a South St. Louis City biker dive bar(The Off Track Saloon)….”Sunday Morning Coming Down Breakfast Gathering.” As a group, we have been doing this every Sunday for about 2 years…have up to 35 people. 5 buck full breakfast and $2.00 Bloody Marys. They let us bring in our own condiment/fixings bar to dress up our Bloodys.? Friends playing music 2-5 at another place (Howards in Soulard) I’m glad to be back with my tribe. Have a great day everyone. St. Louis area Balloon Juicers always welcome! We are a diverse and friendly bunch.

I’ve been blessed since my last year of law school in’84 to live in a neighborhood that urban living, music, communal gatherings are at the center of my life…no marriages, no children. Diverse group of a lot of old traveling hippies that have settled down who now get up early on Sunday and want a hearty, cheap meal.? This community I felt always balanced my professional life and as I have gotten older, I have found that I would rather hang with them than professional acquaintances and old law school friends. For the most part I’m the youngster in the group at age 56. Over 30 plus years, we have all traveled and camped together at music festivals and on float trips. The “professionals” in my life have long given up on me…think I’m nuts. I do detect envy, though, when they talk about their kids in college and the expense after asking about my yearly pilgrimage to the SW. I’m lucky how I have organized my life and thank DOG every morning. Love all of you guys. Thankful for this little on line community and have thoroughly enjoyed meeting some of you in person. I’m working on introducing a new cat to the household. I got Finnick at the Humane Society on Friday. I intended to get a feisty little girl to replace Monster, but then I met him. He was found as a stray, and they had to amputate his left hind leg due to multiple torn ligaments and other damage in the knee. He’s obviously still trying to master navigation as a three-legged cat, and I think there’s still some pain from the surgery.

Harry has been more upset by this development than I had expected, given how easy going he is about everything else. We’re making some progress, though. Finnick just spent about 20 minutes outside of his own room, though he hid under my bed for much of it. Harry is hissing and patrolling around him. It’s progress. I’ll be gone all afternoon, and they’ll remain separated by the French doors to the front room.

I went to the symphony, the theater, a Pacers game, and a cabaret, and the folks I met were not unlike the kind of people who go to symphony and cabaret things here in my New England city-burb.

But of course that was not a representative sample: A Beethoven and Mahler program (and the conductor’s talk afterwards–geeking out time!), Moliere’s The Misanthrope, and “two couples & a piano” act which was well versed in Rodgers and Hart and The Bangles, in a few neat skits.

So I have to work today, of course. My latest crazy office manager story is: she decided, and talked the doctor into, ordering the same scrubs for everyone in the office (which isn’t an unreasonable idea by itself). They’re cute enough, IF you’re thin, which I and three of my coworkers aren’t. In an office of 7 women, four of them basically morbidly obese (but not the manager, of course) they ordered tight, form fitting nurse’s scrubs that run smallish and lovingly hug every flabby roll around the middle in excruciatingly revealing detail. And each outfit cost about $65 per after the volume discount. You can get basic scrubs at Walmart for $5.99 per piece. They could have given all of us $20 to purchase two sets of the same colors for what they spent on just two outfits.
If you ever read about a doctor’s office worker going postal, it will be me, because I just can’t with such dumbshit.

I was just looking at the bird feeder and opening the windows for the cats and thinking wow, there really are a lot of birds out there. Turns out I wasn’t the only one thinking that. A Cooper’s hawk landed in a dead branch a hundred feet or so down the yard. Would have made a great picture – just in the early morning light, shadows around. But the hawk didn’t stay there long. And the little birds knew – it’s very quiet out there now.

It took me a while to accept that the Cooper’s hawks consider the feeding stations theirs too.

Last Monday, she got a bee in her bonnet and decided to just throw away all the “duplicate” contact lens trial boxes we had. Scores of them, an entire wastebasket filled, emptied, and half filled again just tossed. Perfectly good contacts, in the trash.
the very next day the doctor couldn’t dispense what she planned, because the contacts left in the drawer had all expired 6 months earlier. It was admittedly a less used brand, but much of what she tossed the day before were the same things, she threw them out without checking the expiration on the stock in the drawers. She threw out the replacements.

But Faux news has the important trhings covered:Wonder Woman,” which opened Friday to mostly strong reviews. But over at Fox News, some exception was taken to the superhero’s lack of patriotism.

On Friday’s edition of “Your World With Neil Cavuto,” pundits Dion Baia, Mike Gunzelman and Cavuto debated their concerns on the so-called “un-American” turn the live-action film took. Cavuto began the segment by citing that “some are calling it less American,” without citing exactly who took umbrage with Wonder Woman’s lack of perceived patriotism.

Cavuto added that Wonder Woman’s costume wasn’t red, white and blue, and pointed out that “in order to appeal for foreign audiences, [it has] very little reference to America at all.”

I did everything I could discourage this purchase, because I am going to be insisting on changing my schedule and if it’s too much hassle I’m just giving notice; and one other person is planning to quit if she heard this week she got the job she interviewed for. So right there is $130 down the tubes unless they can find short fat replacements

@D58826: LOL. So Fox News expected Wonder Woman to stand up at attention and start the movie by singing the American National Anthem and saluting the American flag? Really? Are any of those types of movies pro-American? I assume movie directors and producers want to maximize their profits by appealing to movie goers overseas, which makes a whole lot of business sense. Any excessive pro-American jingoism could turn foreigners off completely. Believe it or not, people who live elsewhere are proud of their countries too.

Someone needs to do a simple diagram connecting the myriad terrorist organizations and their spiritual roots. I surmise 90% of these groups are tied directly to Saudi Arabia. The country not on the ban list and the country that still chops off heads as a form of government execution and the recipient of soon to be billions in US weaponry. Soon to be owners of vital US infrastructure. Yes, those assholes.

@Patricia Kayden: I’m a fan of comic book based movies. I am of the belief we’re living through a kind of golden age of these movies. Where technology & storytelling allow us to see what has previously only been drawn or imagined, while various directors and writers have figured out how to tell these stories without letting the effects completely overcome the story. Patty Jenks has now joined certain Marvel & DC directors with Wonder Woman by fusing a WWI movie (with a bit of suffrage) and a comic book story. Basically she’s done similar thing like Logan did for dysfunctional families and the long slow decline of aging & Captain America: The Winter Soldier did for a suspenseful spy thriller.

(Add to that that there’s FINALLY a women led production & superhero & I’ve had difficulty climbing down from cloud 9, I’m so happy for her success).

ETA So YMMV, but it’s a good story inside an action based comic book film.

One can imagine an alternative Trump Presidency. In a way, the far Right GOP Congress was a stroke of incredible bad luck for him. If he had a Dem majority in Congress he could have won graciously, dropped his dumb campaign and all those weirdos and misfits he hired and worked with normal people. They’re Democrats, they’re not Republicans. They would have done it. Chuck Schumer is a good negotiator. He would have got a lot and given Trump plenty too. The liberal base of the Dem Party would be angry and that would satisfy the GOP base who like anything that makes liberals angry. Democrats really do want to modernize trade deals and put money into infrastructure and Obamacare really does need fixed. Imagine how shocked people would have been if he had done something TRULY ballsy- “I changed my mind- I like Obamacare- let’s improve it” Christ, OBAMA would have backed that. “Never Trump” was a complete bust. All but 4% of the GOP faithful voted for Trump. They would also have backed a moderate Trump because as we know now they will back anyone with an R after their name.

Of course, he would have to turn into a completely different and much better person to do all that- unlikely at 70 years old and with his limited world view- but it COULD have happened.

I’ve mentioned before, but: I had three roomies in college, some time after the Iranian revolution and before the first Gulf War, who were from Iran.

I was worried for them, not about them. The folks at my college weren’t the most worldly, and these guys were, only college-age, yet much more sophisticated and well-traveled than the typical suburban kids enrolled.

The movie Persepolis*, really tells a lot about Iran at the time: The theocracy was hellish, and the educated classes (including the protagonist) hoped that the revolution was going to destroy it and something better would go in its place, but those hopes foundered. It was almost the opposite of Soviet Union becoming Russia again (which was a fake “under new management” sign): New people, new costumes, new words, as much oppression, but steered to a different star in the sky, so to speak.

(*Also a graphic novel which I will read someday.)

It’s considered the birthplace of Islam because the Prophet was born and lived his life within the borders of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 12 centuries before it came into existence. Also because some of the events common to the history of all the Abrahamic faiths are believed to have happened there.

A couple of very interesting articles in the Sunday paper. One discussed the yooouuuge number of vacancies in the Trump regime due to his paranoia and insistence on absolute personal loyalty (like a certain dictator he much admires): only 5 of 53 Pentagon top jobs filled so far, and only 8 of 120 at the State Department. The other article noted the rising tide of new white nationalist hate groups, including “Proud Boys” and the “Fraternal Order of Alt-Knights”. Would be laughable if these armed stooges weren’t out to physically harm people.

I’m an Ohio Mom, too, and I agree with you. I just said to my husband this morning that I am wearing myself out with worry. My outrage meter exploded a while back and hasn’t been reset, so I was questioning my own feelings about how Trump is doing. The media desperately tries to normalize his bizarre actions, the Republicans are thrilled with a Democracry Destroyer, and all the rules and regulations we’ve had in place for decades are being shredded.

I will never quit fighting. But lately it seems to do little good against the weary acceptance of everyone else. Just like when I thought his campaign comments about Mexicans would do him in, or when the video of his bragging about grabbing…was the last straw, it wasn’t. His lack of any skills, his disregard for Presidential protocols, his flat-out daily lies; nothing comes of it. The daily gaffes come quickly but the investigations of his wrongdoing will drag on for years.

So, yeah, taking a breather is probably good for me, too. But I’ll never stop hating him and what the GOP is doing to our country.

@Kelly: The Brits wanted BP to exploit the oil freely and we hated Mossadegh because Commies! So better to send Kermit Roosevelt there to make sure Shah-boy stayed in power to keep the cash flowing. Mossadegh stays in power and the ’79 revolution doesn’t happen and Iran likely ends up the most liberal nation in the region and one of our most powerful allies there, powerful enough to allow us to not have to suck up to Saudi princes. Even with the revolution, Iran is probably the most Western and democratic nation in the region. Low bar, yeah, but I think we still stick with the KSA over Iran because of lingering Cold War attitudes and the hostage stuff and Israel. Iran’s government is not good by our standards but they are the most pragmatic in the region, outside of Israel. They would have never let a bunch of their citizens be the large majority of the 9/11 hijackers like the KSA did. But our current president schmoozes with the princes while treating Angela Merkel like shit.

The world would be so much different if Iran was our ally. Seems folks in power in a lot of places prefer the status quo. I honestly wonder why.

Bush Admin told Iran to fuck off and later named them as part of the Axis of Evil.

Also, too some very preliminary gestures of reconciliation were made at the end of the Clinton Administration, so there was interest from Iran on better relations.

President Trump was like a first responder, quickly retweeting a Drudge headline before details were confirmed: “Fears of new terror attack after van ‘mows down 20 people’ on London Bridge.”

if my house ever burns down, or the years of cured meats and potato chips catch up with me (I’ve reformed, a bit), I hope the firefighters/paramedics stop to check drudge

Because I always try to be fair here’s some more context. I don’t think it helps:

Then he went political (with critics pouncing on his use of “ban”): “We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!”
Only after that did he go personal: “Whatever the United States can do to help out in London and the U. K., we will be there – WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!”

and because he learned in journalism school, or maybe from a bad movie about journalism, that one should always try to include ‘local color’, Mike used some British
