Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Books are my comfort food!

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

So many bastards, so little time.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

The FAKE MSM is working so hard trying to get me not to use Social Media. They hate that I can get the honest and unfiltered message out.

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 6, 2017

Here at the ACLU, we think you should keep using social media. https://t.co/KjM62aKGuL

.

Apart from picking at sworn testimony, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

Is this him getting mad at his aides for trying to keep him from live-tweeting the Comey testimony or something? I haven’t seen anybody in the media try to keep him from tweeting. The media loves that shit. And, of course, so do the people filing lawsuits.

I am sick of politics and discovered the twitter feed and from there the website “Letters of Note.” Turns out Dorothy Parker died 50 years ago today and they have some good stuff.

The great Dorothy Parker, who died 50 years ago today, informs her editor that she has writer's block. pic.twitter.com/VF50PicDUH— Letters of Note (@LettersOfNote) June 7, 2017

This review by Carl Jung of James Joyce’s “Ulysses” and a letter he sent him subsequently were amazeballs.

The 40 pages of non stop run at the end is a string of veritable psychological peaches. I suppose the devil’s grandmother knows so much about the real psychology of a woman, I didn’t.

Well, I just try to recommend my little essay to you, as an amusing attempt of a perfect stranger that went astray in the labyrinth of your Ulysses and happened to get out of it again by sheer good luck. At all events you may gather from my article what Ulysses has done to a supposedly balanced psychologist.

I had an long distance admirer in college who used to send me long typewritten letters. Blog posts are what we have now, I guess.

By constantly pointing out that he’s hurting himself and the country with his tweets, the media is implying that he should stop tweeting. Apparently he’s missed the fact that all of those panels of villagers exist to tell politicians what they should do and how they should do it. He’s also as you say missing the fact that they love his tweets, they are so dumb and misinformed, it gives them the opportunity to tsk, tsk, and show their very serious person schtick.

Speaking of cats, our kitty Annie continues to improve on her regimen of steroids. Last night, she was creeping around my craft room while I was in there, which she hasn’t done for several months.

We see the kitty dermatologist next week to see if we should continue the daily steroids or if we can ramp those down. She’s pretty underweight right now, so they may want to keep her on until she gets back up to 8 pounds (she’s about 6.5 pounds right now).

(For those not up to date: after seeing several vets, it looks like our middle cat has an autoimmune disorder called pemphigus that attacks skin cells. It’s treatable with steroids, but figuring out the right maintenance dose can be tricky.)

I look forward to watching them all blather away trying to explain why it’s perfectly fine for a president to lean on an FBI Director to get rid of the “cloud” hanging over his administration. Between this Comey mess, and whatever Mueller finds and God help us, passing the AHCA, we will have the opportunity to take back congress next year. Nothing is a slam dunk, but we’re four months in, Fall 2018 is a long way off, things can change. But have you seen any evidence that Twtler, ZEGS and McConnell will do anything to improve their standing with the electorate. Every thing they are pushing is unpopular.

@? ?? Goku (aka Junior G-Man) ? ?: Yup. He was here in Cincinnati talking about infrastructure but did not mention planned projects for the elephant that spans Ohio River between Ohio and Kenfuckty known as The Brent Spence Bridge. Trump campaigned on that, but one of our best local reporters noted that he failed to mention it by name.

@Kathleen: I was working on that!

Except, I think that hookers hook you in the normal version, nyet?

I couldn’t figure out what the reverse was, you hook the hookers, I guess, but I got confused at that point and gave up.

@Morzer: That’s fair. it doesn’t take a whole lot of IQ points to be reflexively anti-whatever-Dems-are-for (aka Cleek’s Law)

I wonder, inside the “Breitbart Bubble” (and I guess this extends to folks who have Fox News on 24/7, subscribe to the Washington Times, etc etc) – is it kind of like a soothing, peaceful high? Or do they mainline psychobabble and nonsense so hard, then get withdrawal and have to watch old O’Reilly clips?

I think it’s more or less about maintaining a continuous rage high, which leaves them prone to bad decisions (buy gold, ye preppers!) and prone to lashing out in paranoia against anyone who looks at them sideways.

I sure hope those women got the Order of Lenin, or whatever passes for the highest honor the Russian Federation bestows. I mean, for that sort of service, most assuredly above and beyond the call of duty ….. They maybe our adversaries, but ya gotta respect the work — the talent, dedication, thoroughness.

FWIW, I believe they’re called “hookers” because a Civil War general named Hooker became infamous for the number of what were then called “camp followers” that were hanging around with his troops, and people gave them that derisive name. Eventually it got applied to all ladies of the evening.

I have plans that will preclude me from following anything, driving to run errands, followed up by hot-dawgs and beer at a baseball game. Hope it isn’t too warm for the outdoor entertainment.

I already know what will happen: stupid questions, evasive answers, irritating commentary.

@Trentrunner: I figure Trump may get taken down in his second term, after he’s reelected. All the bills coming due in the second term is the usual pattern for these things.

    Two things:

1 – With someone who lies as constantly as Trump it makes no sense to try and parse out what he means by, for example, “Russian” hookers. Could it be Ukranian hookers? Could it have been somewhere besides Russia? No, it was Russian hookers and he is lying. Just assume he is lying about everything and you will usually be right.

2 – The conflict in his mind between Cleek’s Law (liberals want me to keep tweeting so I should stop) and his Twitter addiction reminds me of Nomad in the old Star Trek series. If only we had James T. Kirk to question him. (Bonus points for obscure Star Trek reference).
