Per the local paper, the Washington Post, which has seen better rallies protesting product changes at neighborhood coffee shops:
A group of white nationalists and right-wing activists descended on one of America’s greatest venues for political speech Sunday — the area in front of the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial, near where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of his dream — and it was essentially just another day in Washington.
Some on both the right and left had voiced fears of violence. But the National Park Service reported no arrests or significant incidents. Instead the day saw some speechifying, some counterprogramming, some counterprotesting and a searing argument about free speech and political correctness.
The Lincoln Memorial rally was headlined by white nationalist Richard Spencer…
Some in the crowd waved Confederate or green “Kek” flags identified with what is sometimes called the alt-right. More than one member of Vanguard America, a group that left white nationalist fliers at the University of Maryland last year, donned masks…
The gathering, dubbed the “Rally for Free Speech,” was held as another group of conservatives Spencer criticized as “losers and freaks” held a competing event in front of the White House, seeking to distance themselves from Spencer’s racial rhetoric. Spencer had referred to them as “alt-lite.”
The second rally was emceed by conservative provocateur Jack Posobiec, who recently disrupted a New York production of “Julius Caesar” that featured the bloody slaying of a President Trump-like Caesar. Many participants argued that the recent shooting at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., was a product of left-wing rhetorical excess…
“We’re standing for an end to both political violence and violent rhetoric in the media,” said Posobiec, who also was a player in the false “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory.
Kenneth Lane, who wore a “CNN Terrorist” shirt depicting comedian Kathy Griffin posing with a severed “Trump” head, told a crowd before the speakers began: “It’s time to put George Soros in the gas chamber.”…
At least Posobiec, unlike Richard Spencer, didn’t just get busted for violating state non-profit laws in Virginia.

Justin Rosario’s report for the Daily Banter is pretty funny, too — “A whole whopping three hundred angry white men showed up to whine about how persecuted they are”:
… To be fair, the counter rally further up the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial wasn’t awe-inspiring, either. The usual anti-fascist crowd was holding a protest across the city at the DC police headquarters so the white nationalists drew a much smaller protest crowd than normal…
As Spencer was finishing up with the news cameras, a couple of dozen white nationalists, mostly dressed in white polo shirts like a gaggle of Yuppies, marched in like they were on parade. They even had a soundtrack, some kind of vaguely Kraftwerk-sounding song on a loop. Several were carrying various flags and they seemed quite puffed up with importance…
It was mostly men. The counter-rally was a roughly 50/50 mix of men and women but the white nationalist crowd was overwhelmingly XY. Out of the 300 or so gathered, if 20 were female, I’d be surprised. I suspect this stems from the misogyny that runs rampant throughout the movement. Remember, in alt-right land, the white man (emphasis on “man”) is under assault from every side. This feeling of persecution was by far the dominant theme of the rally. The word “enemy” got tossed about like confetti. The entire premise of the rally was that the “free speech” of white nationalists is under attack by the Jew media, liberal colleges and the anti-fascist movement… While they were bitching about how their rights are being trampled, they lustily cheered every time someone attacked the “dishonest” press. One can only assume they would happily support Trump censoring the Jew-controlled media. One can also assume they don’t understand the contradiction involved….

One thing from today's rallies: antifa left is getting smarter about ignoring these or protesting peacefully. Denies media attention.

What’s the weird green flag in the pic of the ‘alt-lighjt’ rally?
Anne Laurie
@Adam L Silverman: No problem — this gives people a place to talk about the small personal stuff, without feeling they’ll derail something weighty.
Anne Laurie
@jl: It’s the ‘Kekistan’ (Pepe meme) flag — like Nazis, but “ironically”, for the lulz.

@jl: Off topic, but important: In thread below you said “RAMPS have made to San Francisco. Bay Area. Been seeing then regularly last few weeks. I’m afraid to eat them. Maybe when a four day weekend comes up and I’ll be sequestered away from civilization, I’ll try them.”
Listen to your fear. Ramps do not grow in CA and you’re almost certainly seeing something else — and that something else could be deadly. Don’t eat wild plants that have not been IDed by someone who knows plants.

Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ
This Prosobiec guy is a real piece of work. I sort of knew him online via Watchersonthewall.com (WotW for short, where I contributed for about two Game of Thrones seasons). At that time his alias was @AngryGOTFan on Twitter and he used a variety of aliases to comment on our site. At first he was just funny posting as a book purist but then he became more and more excessive to get attention. I think he fell in love with the fame because he went right off the rails. He would do anything for attention including abusive, troll-like behavior on our site. We started banning him. He would crash Game of Thrones events and I think even tried to get close to the author with some limited success. Around about that time he also apparently was stalking a woman (a friend of the editor of the site). His online and IRL behavior was definitely not normal. At about that time he was also getting into the alt-right and Men’s Rights movement online (don’t know what his reddit username was, guessing that his rejection by said woman fed into his persecution complex). I dropped out of WotW and hadn’t heard anything more about the weirdo until the next thing I know the little twerp has White House Press credentials. And now he’s interrupting Shakespearean plays and speaking at nationally covered protest rallies.
Basically all this is to say that there is a definite pattern with this guy–he finds something popular, attaches himself to it, takes a contrary stance, and pushes it as loudly and obnoxiously as possible. He is a FWT- Fame Whore Troll. How many of the alt-right leaders are simply that….little boys who can’t get positive attention so they act out and take gratification from the negative attention, all the while riding it to fame and fortune. Hell, one could claim that most of the loudest voices on the right are this way–Limpballs, BecKKK, Hannity, etc.
