Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

The National Guard is not Batman.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

We will not go back.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

He really is that stupid.

I edited that week's @TIME cover story on Kate Winslet by @MarkHarrisNYC, and can confirm it is real! https://t.co/KfdG7b6RtI

— Radhika Jones (@radhikajones) June 27, 2017

So much going on with the Senate Health Care Bill Tax Cut Bill that I don’t want you all to miss this:

The framed copy of Time Magazine was hung up in at least five of President Trump’s clubs, from South Florida to Scotland. Filling the entire cover was a photo of Donald Trump.

“Donald Trump: The ‘Apprentice’ is a television smash!” the big headline said. Above the Time nameplate, there was another headline in all caps: “TRUMP IS HITTING ON ALL FRONTS . . . EVEN TV!”

This cover — dated March 1, 2009 — looks like an impressive memento from Trump’s pre-presidential career. To club members eating lunch, or golfers waiting for a pro-shop purchase, it seemed to be a signal that Trump had always been a man who mattered. Even when he was just a reality-TV star, Trump was the kind of star who got a cover story in Time.

But that wasn’t true.

The Time cover is a fake.

There was no March 1, 2009, issue of Time Magazine. And there was no issue at all in 2009 that had Trump on the cover.

In fact, the cover on display at Trump’s clubs, observed recently by a reporter visiting one of the properties, contains several small but telling mistakes. Its red border is skinnier than that of a genuine Time cover, and, unlike the real thing, there is no thin white border next to the red. The Trump cover’s secondary headlines are stacked on the right side — on a real Time cover, they would go across the top.

And it has two exclamation points. Time headlines don’t yell.

“I can confirm that this is not a real TIME cover,” Kerri Chyka, a spokeswoman for Time Inc., wrote in an email to The Washington Post.

Time has responded:

UPDATE: @time has asked the @realdonaldtrump's businesses to remove the phony magazine covers from their walls. https://t.co/beJXOTrevb

Nothing surprises me about the douchebag-in-chief anymore.

I hope someone makes a “Putins Cock Holster” Time cover.

What is really pissing me off now is the fact the media has normalized his constant half retarded idiotic behaviour. To the point where they just ignore it now and continue to pretend that this guy is actually remotely qualified for the job on some level.

In the novel “The Death of Vishnu” (2001), author Manil Suri describes a civil servant in Bombay who lies about everything. Everything. Suri has a hilarious line — wish I had the book in front of me — about how the guy even even lies about what he has brought to the office for lunch, then has to go onto the roof of the building and eat by himself so that he won’t be found out. With people like Trump it’s as if the truth were difficult to enunciate and the lie is just a simple shortcut, a way to save energy. Add sociopathy and narcissism, and you get fake Time covers.

Apparently he was only on one time cover for real in 1989 until he “went into politics” and the person who actually has been on more time covers by far, is Nixon.
I have seen at least one article where his office wall was covered by framed magazine covers with him on it and what I noticed was that he had two copies of some issues scattered around to make the wall look more full. I thought it was sort of pathetic. I think the same article pointed out that he had covers and boasted about being on covers where the story was actually very unflattering but he didn’t care. I can’t even understand that.
If he was actually fooled himself by this fake, he must not have actually have opened the magazine cover.

Saw a pic of the meeting after the deathcare vote was delayed that they had between senators and Trump at the White House. Heller, Collins, and Murkowski flanking the shitgibbon. I sure hope their Democratic opponents grabbed copies of the photo. Whether deathcare passes or not, a candidate could run the photo and say “Here’s Senator Collins discussing with Trump how to gut your health insurance and bankrupt you.”

Along those lines, does anybody have a good photo of Ed Gillespie (R-Crazy Eyes), wingnut for governor in VA, at a Trump rally? I have one with a big Trump sign right behind him, but it’s poor quality.

    Great piece

People saw Hillary as an out of touch elitist in hock to hedge funds and financial interests, while Trump campaigned as “one of you”.

Is it really a surprise he swept the Rust Belt?

Dude, Democrats have been trying to help white workers for, literally, more than 100 years. I don’t know what more Democrats can do for them. Five day workweeks? An end to hiring children? Social Security? Medicare? Lily Ledbetter? About 673,980 other things I can’t even think of offhand? All thanks to Democrats. Seriously, there is one party that has worked its ass off for years to help white workers, and over the last 30 years or so, white workers have rewarded this party–the Democratic Party, by the by, if you’re having trouble working out which one I’m talking about–by dumping their asses from power every other chance they’ve had. It seems to me that sooner or later, it should be up to white workers to take yes for an answer. I don’t know what else Democrats could do, other than fuck over Black people or something. But that isn’t happening. And if that’s what it takes to get white workers to vote for Democrats, then Democrats are going to ahave to keep on keeping on doing whatever they can for white workers without any thanks from them. Luckily for white workers, there is a party that assiduously looks out for their interests, even if they don’t have the sense to look out for their own interests.

Why don’t you actually read the words of Obama-Obama-Trump voters rather than screaming WAAH THEY’RE ALL RACIST!

Greenberg’s study of Macomb became a canonical text for Democrats attempting to recover from a decade of pummeling. Bill Clinton hired him in 1992, and in his presidential campaign he spoke directly to the racial anxieties revealed in the focus groups. Clinton distanced himself from the welfare state, which he damned as bloated and inefficient. He promised to pour money into the middle class itself, through tax cuts and spending on education and health care. “Let’s forget about race and be one nation again,” he told an audience in Macomb. “I’ll help you build the middle class back.”

The strategy that Bill Clinton pursued worked, eroding the Republican advantage in the county. Then Barack Obama won Macomb in 2008, the first of his two victories there. Greenberg declared that Macomb had become “normal and uninteresting.” In a New York Times op-ed, he vowed to walk away from his great subject: “Good riddance, my Macomb barometer.”

That was a wishful farewell. Not only did Trump reclaim Macomb for the Republicans—trouncing Clinton by 12 percentage points there—but he turned the Democratic establishment back to Greenberg’s central question about working-class whites: Did racism put many of them beyond reach? When Greenberg traveled to Michigan in February, to conduct his first focus groups in Macomb in nearly a decade, he was genuinely unsure of what he might find. Trump’s naked appeals to racism were far more intense than anything he had ever witnessed. The scenes from Trump’s rallies created a plausible impression that the president had activated long-suppressed feelings of hatred. To probe their disaffection, Greenberg pulled together voters who, for the most part, had defected from Obama to Trump, who had gone from voting for the first African American president to siding with his racist successor. I joined him as an observer.

    Go read the whole thing.

    Since you won’t RTFA…

The focus groups were designed to probe for weakness in Trumpism, to test lines of attack that might neutralize his appeal. Once Greenberg has earned a room’s trust, he introduces new ideas to it. His moderator asked the subjects whether it worried them that Trump had stocked his administration with Wall Street chieftains. That piece of news, it seemed, hadn’t traveled widely in Macomb, and it consistently rattled the groups. “It’s going to be a lot of the same old garbage,” one man groused. Concerns about Trump’s temperament did nothing to dislodge the participants’ support—the connection these voters felt with Trump was personal and deep<—but the fact that he might align with traditional Republicans annoyed them to no end. (The groups reacted angrily when shown photos of Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell. People described them as “shifty” and “for the upper class.”) What many Macomb voters value about Trump is that he represents an unaligned force in American politics. That’s the very quality that in earlier election cycles led them to Obama.

    Emphasis mine.

Actually, schnookums, the article doesn’t say what you claim it does. I know, we’re all shocked.

    Here’s a pull quote:

To win the Democratic presidential nomination, it helps to secure the African American vote. But another path to victory involves rallying white voters with a populist bent. This can create an uncomfortable dynamic in presidential primaries, where race vies with class to become the defining concern of the party. Politicians rarely vocalize the tension. But the socialism of Bernie Sanders—which hindered his efforts to explain the centrality of race to American life—made this split less subterranean than usual.

Bernie made white voters aware that he was the Great White Hope, and that voting for him meant those voters had to reject women and minorities as allies.

That’s why they voted for Trump — because Bernie energized them into thinking of themselves primarily as white voters. So when Bernie’s candidacy flamed out, they chose the candidate that most resembled Bernie: Donald Trump.

@Ben from Virginia: I do believe the problem you’re having here is one of identity politics: you feel the need to defend the WWC from “attacks” even in the face of their own political hypocrisy.

Please explain the following: people who don’t want a “out-of-touch establishment Republican plutocrat who wants to screw you over” voted for a billionaire who vowed to take away their health care protections and bragged about not paying taxes.

But clearly a bunch of nobodies on the internet correctly observing that racism was a huge motivating factor is much more the problem. Yes. Indeed.

My personal gut reaction is that sometimes people like Roland Martin come close to sounding like that, if taken out of context.

But a big difference is that there are real race/ethnic specific policy issues underlying a lot of racial/ethnic minority commentary.
I don’t see one for whites. Sure, middle and working class whites have gotten hammered with growing wealth and income inequality, macro and trade policy that that targets workers, and the effect of crony capitalist and monopoly rent capitalism that seems to run the country recently. Also nothing says “solidarity” like the relationship between Asian-American convenience store owners in the inner city and their African-American cousins.

As I said, let the ethnonationalist genie out of the bottle in a multi-ethnic and it ends in three ways (1) dictatorship (2) civil war (sometimes with the added “bonus” of genocide) (3) partition.

Most people vote on issues that they feel are important to them personally.
The vast majority of African-American voters switched to Democrat after the Republicans decided to use the Southern Strategy and race as a wedge issue. If by some strange turn of history, the policy stance of the parties switched, I think the vast majority of African-American voters would switch back.

A minority, and one growing ever smaller, of white bigots considers race ethnicity and national origin, and religion, per se, important enough to join a party or a movement based mostly on those issues. They make a hell of a lot of noise though. The only real racial identity politics today is practiced by an ever dwindling number of white bigots.

My personal opinion is that Hillary Clinton reluctance to go really aggressive on specific policy issues hurt her with minority voters in 2016. Any racial identity politics she practiced, which compared to the Trumpsters and GOP uses, was pretty weak tea, did not help her make a big turnout with those groups (though hard to say given the increase in voter suppression used against minorities, which is another real policy issue as opposed to identity politics)

On Nov. 8, hundreds of black and Latino students got into two separate battles in the streets around Wilmer Amina Carter High School in Rialto. Two days later, another interracial fight broke out on campus, and four days after that a huge battle erupted in the lunchroom, leaving 57 of the hundreds of students involved injured. At around the same time, more than 20 police officers broke up a series of street fights between black and Latino students outside Fremont High School in Oakland that involved as many as 150 participants and bystanders. In San Jacinto, a riot at San Jacinto High School between black and Hispanic students resulted in three arrests, six suspensions and the lockdown of 1,700 students. Some 500 students were involved in the fight, and police reported some arriving parents added fuel to the fire by shouting racial slurs and urging their children to keep up the battle. Similar racial conflicts hit Crenshaw, Manual Arts and Jordan high schools in Los Angeles.

But clearly, we need MOAR ETHNONATIONALISM!

When I saw this my first thought was that Trumpus probably didn’t “lie” and create the cover himself. He was probably throwing a shitstorm of a tantrum so somebody told him “Hey, calm down, you’re on the cover of Time magazine!” “Really?” says baby-man and calms right down, “Are YOU on the cover of fucking Time magazine, are you loser?” He struts around the room while the person who thought up the idea runs to get somebody to photoshop up a Time cover and get a framed copy to them – stat!

Does anybody think this went down any other way?

Actually, I can see another scenario. Somebody is giving Trump some news he doesn’t want to hear so he just starts rambling about how he’s on the cover of Time magazine this week. “They sent me a framed cover, didn’t they?” Motions to underling who runs to call props to get a framed cover fast.

It’s turtles all the way down. And the turtles are lies.

This also tends to be self-correcting.

    Hi Ben,

How do you feel about pie? Because that’s the only thing you’ll be talking about here, soon, if you keep up at this rate.

    Take care,
    JR

PS: One of my favorites is Pecan Pie, with a big side of vanilla ice cream, which cuts the richness of a proper pecan pie. Also, I use maple syrup instead of corn syrup for the filling the pecans float on.

Think about it, all pie all the time!!

    @Mike J:

Hey M^4, next time you’re futzing with the pie script, can you add a counter? I’d love to see a line below the filter ui that says something like, “You’ve pied 112 out of 231 comments on this thread.”

This is a great idea. I would like to be able to add comments to the pie database, personally, because I do like a good pie. And I make a good pie. So I can type good pie comments, too. I am impressed with the wide variety of piey commentary, though!!

@J R in WV: Wow. Pie flavors/ingredients/options by comment. That is BRILLIANT.

I wonder about the efficacy of cutting a rich pecan pie with vanilla ice cream…vanilla ice cream seems to be rich. Is vanilla sherbet a go, with or without sprinkles?
