Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

“But what about the lurkers?”

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

When we show up, we win.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Not all heroes wear capes.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Come on, man.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Not new, of course, and perhaps not that important in the scheme of things, but here is the President of the United States abusing cable news personalities on Twitter:

I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don't watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came..

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 29, 2017

…to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year's Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 29, 2017

So embarrassing. Remember when Republicans used to (hypocritically) scold President Obama for putting his feet up on the desk? Recall how they spoke in hushed tones about Ronald Reagan always wearing a suit jacket in the Oval Office because of the dignity of that space?

Yeah, those same people voted for this petty, boorish, incredibly small creature. And they can kindly shut the fuck up forever about the respect owed to that office.

Respect for the office only matters if a Dem is President, same as with deficits, taxes, etc. etc.

Although the next time a GOPer laments a Dem President not being respectful enough or dignified enough I may be tempted to raise my voice just a tiny little bit in anger.

    @Quinerly:

I still can’t believe he was elected.

I’m not surprised he won the Republican primary. He pretty much gave a big fuck-you to the Republican economic platform, which appealed to more Republicans voters than his opponents, who here hemming and hawing about how great free trade and tax cuts are and how Social Security and Medicare need to be cut to pay for those tax cuts. Plus the outright racism of his campaign said loud and clear what most Republican voters believe in their hearts.

What surprised me is so many people in the general election decided he was the best possible choice.

What also disappointed me is the media, like with Bush, Jr., ignoring the mountain of dubious failed businesses and shady dealings that kept him afloat before his run for office. I mean there were one or two articles about it, but unless something gets blown up like Hillary’s e-mails, the Benghazi “scandal”, or Whitewater, the average American just isn’t going to register it.

The court records are public. He has deposition after deposition of bad business deals. But they were glossed over.

The sad part is the media is not going to admit how they failed the public in the 2016 election. Maybe because Republicans are more corrupt it will make the news more exciting, while a Republican is in the White House, so that is who they unconsciously back.

Until Pence gets tarred and feathered in the Russia investigation, I do not want him in power. He’ll be given the Bush, Jr. treatment, as someone who is “restoring honor and integrity to the White House”, and the bar will be so low for him to the “Presidential” that as long as he doesn’t “drunk” Tweet at 3:00 am, he’ll be unassailable for the rest of his term.

The investigations into Russia hacking will be stopped. And Russia will gear up to do it again in 2018, and we’ll be lulled into a false sense of complacency because Trump (who is depicted as the sole beneficiary of the hacking) will not be around.

You know, I watched Jason Isbell (one of my favorite musicians out there) on The Daily Show last week and it just reinforced to me that “trailer trash” has nothing to do with wealth or where you were born, it’s entirely about state of mind and culture. Isbell was literally born in a trailer in Alabama, but he is a smart, funny, warm human being who is as far from trailer trash as it gets. Trump was born a gazillionaire in New York, and is the dictionary definition of trailer trash.

Sen Bob Corker just said he expects tax cut for wealthy to come OUT of health bill to boost susidies for poor

Corker is lying. He wants people to believe they took out all of the tax cuts for the wealthy, which is not the same as actually doing it. My bet is this is strictly about using that $200 billion room they left for maneuvering.

You’re supposed to EMBODY these things. That’s why Michelle Obama was always jumping rope with kids. Words mean something. She can’t defend the cyber-bully and be a national spokesperson against cyber-bullying. She’ll have to choose something else.

@Kay: The main reason the bill is so horrible is because they have to balance the budget implications after taking out a huge tax cut for the wealthy. Changing that completely changes the options they are working from and the bill that can result.

    3. the latest Muslim ban that according to Bruce Fein, a Reagan era lawyer, may well be in violation of several of the provisions in the SCOTUS ruling earlier this week.

But (and I can’t find the Tweet), as one WH official said at least the Mika controversy means that the media isn’t talking about the GOP trying to killing millions of people. I think that is called damning with faint praise.

But First Lady Melania Trump spoke up in defense of her husband.

“As the First Lady has stated publicly in the past, when her husband gets attacked, he will punch back 10 times harder,” her communications director Stephanie Grisham said in response to reporters’ questions.

Melania Trump has previously said that as First Lady she wants to focus on the problem of cyberbullying.

President Camacho did the best he could with what he had and did worry about the nationwide crop failures. He just lacked the tools to understand what was causing it. He wanted to make things better for ordinary Americans.

@Frankensteinbeck: America in a nutshell. Well said. A substantial portion of our population is animated primarily by resentment, anti-establishment rage, anti-intellectualism, jealousy and spite. They LOVE that this pisses off elites and polite people and the educated suburbanites who feel comfortable in a rapidly changing, pluralist 21st century America that confuses them, with their shitty educations and lack of access and nagging feelings of being left behind. T acting out his unfiltered rage on twitter feels like a socially acceptable (because the guy’s the f’ing POTUS) way of lashing out in revenge on their behalf. He feeds them the vicarious satisfaction of carrying out the punching of elites they know they can’t undertake in real life. That’s what they mean by saying they love him because he’s politically incorrect. He’s raging at a system and a world that’s gotten increasingly complex and sophisticated and seemingly incoherent while they don’t have the tools or the drive to keep up with it. He doesn’t do it intentionally, of course. He loathes them just as he loathes everyone, and is driven solely by pathology. It’s nonetheless a symbiotic relationship. They hear us moaning about how Trump’s embarrassing us and they LOVE it, because they don’t give a fuck about America’s standing with Germany and China. A fat lot of good being global leader in everything did them in their minds, other than let them fall further and further behind the quick adapters and well-educated*. So any embarrassment or fatigue or anger we feel is, in their minds, turnabout and just rewards.

    * Nevermind this was primarily facilitated by Republican politics and policy. They’ve been fed enough Fox bile over the last quarter century that they’re convinced Democrats, with their globalism and elitism, perfectly embodied in the Clintons, are just as much the root of their problems as the prevailing GOP economic policy that’s been skewed toward strip mining the American middle class since the Reagan years.

Sort of off-topic but it does fall into the category of if we can’t find a solution for this how can we solve healthcare.

The neighbor of this 11 year old died in a hot car incident. He was so upset that he invented something to prevent it from happening again. Not sure if it will work but one of the car companies invited him and his dad in for a demo. Now I have a car that has the option to selection doz. of colors for the dashboard and will remember thousands of positions for the seat, how hard is it to do something so you don’t forget to leave your kid in the back seat. I know as a parent you should rememeber but then how hard is it to remember hpow you like the front seat positioned?

Bishop Curry looks for ways to fix the world.
For an 11-year-old boy, he’s unusually curious about big-picture problems, his dad says — from natural disasters to civil rights. And he’s always loved to tinker.
That’s why it wasn’t a surprise when Bishop, after seeing an upsetting local news report about a 6-month-old who died when left in a hot car, resolved to make sure something like that never happened again.
“I was like, ‘This would be my one-way shot to actually helping people,'” Bishop told NBC News.
So Bishop, in his McKinney, Texas home, drew a mock-up of a device that would sense if a child is left alone in a car. The device, attached to a headrest or car seat, would then alert parents’ phones and the police — all while blowing cold air until help arrives.
    He calls the device “Oasis.”
“It’s like texting,” Bishop said. “But without emojis.”
His dad, an engineer at Toyota also named Bishop Curry, was immediately sold on the idea: “My thought was, ‘Why isn’t this in stores now?'”
Toyota was so impressed by Bishop’s idea that it sent him and his dad to Michigan for a safety conference.

So much of the reaction to this has been that Trump should ‘stop tweeting’. The problem isn’t with what he tweets, the problem is with what he THINKS. If Twitter didn’t exist, Trump would still be erratic, impulsive, ignorant and vulgar – we just wouldn’t know about it. Or at least we wouldn’t be exposed to the truth of it every single day.

And to be honest, I’m rather perplexed by the outsized reaction to this latest affront. Yes, his tweet was insulting and vulgar. But come on, people, he publicly accused the previous president of a FELONY! Shouldn’t that be a worse offense? After all, an insult is just an insult, there are no potential repercussions to the insulted. But in a more normal world, with a president who had any credibility, the PRESIDENT accusing someone of a CRIME should have all sorts of ramifications – it could trigger investigations, it could ruin the reputation of the person he accused, it might cost the person their job or business opportunities. That’s pretty serious stuff, but it just got shrugged off as ‘Trump being Trump’. But man, talk about a woman and a facelift and the whole town goes berserk.
