Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let there be snark.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Come on, man.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Republicans in disarray!

The revolution will be supervised.

This blog will pay for itself.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

After roe, women are no longer free.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Very cool video. Eagles are so magnificent. Earlier this year, I was captivated by an eagle cam, with parents taking turns with one guarding the nest and the baby while the other went off to procure food.

Just spent way too many hours replacing a turn signal assembly on landlady’s car, which someone(s) had absconded with (entered her unlocked house and took only a spare key for the car), taken for a joyride (dirt, grass and branches embedded under the license plate and bumper) and crunched the corner of the front bumper enough to take out 2 lights, the turn signal (plug smashed) and a side parking light (lens destroyed). Longish story in full, and even weirder than that summation makes it sound, including their having switched batteries and where and how it was found.

Could not figure out why the brand new replacement unit’s screw would not engage with the corresponding hole in the retention strap (thought at first maybe the now new angle of the casing the assembly fits into was the problem) until got in really close with a strong light and discovered the head of the screw was stripped. Had to grip the pointy end with pliers and remove the screw that way until enough of the head was above the lens that could grip it there, then popped in a screw from the old damaged unit and voila.

@frosty: The air is much better now as frosty says. It’s still a challenge to photograph though. Most of the problem now is not the smog, though it’s still a factor, but finding a day where there isn’t a marine layer. The day I took that pic(from the area around Mt. Hollywood in Griffith Park) it was pretty clear but still a bit of haze. Here’s the left portion of that panorama so you can get an idea of the haze that was present.

So these shitheads put out, as cover stories for the Russian meeting, that they were falsely enticed into the meeting by an offer to buy some HC oppo research from somebody fronted by a big shot Russian Laywer, but he really wanted to talk about the ban on adoptions of poor kids and orphans from Russia an how to get them lifted, which I guess is the prettiest face they can put on some deal on the sanctions.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Ha ha. Marine layer? Yeah, I remember the SoCal marine layer. We here in Northern California are pretty unsophisticated yokels compared to you very fancy Hollywood people. But at least we are honest. We say ‘fog’. It’s fog and low low cloud cover.

They can’t admit to fog and clouds in Southern California. Ha ha, marine layer. Right.

@jl: Hey, the weather dudes(and dudettes) call it marine layer. It’s not as thick as fog, but sort of a light fog. It’s not a yellowish or reddish color that you see with smog, it’s the marine layer.

  56. 56.

    jl

    July 10, 2017 at 1:29 am

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Sometimes they call it the marine layer here to. But periodically they break down and call it what it is, fog and/or cloud cover.

I think it’s a racket to dupe the tourists? “Oh, hey, we don’t have fog and clouds in sunny California. There is this little ‘marine layer’ thing. Don’t worry about it, technical meteorological stuff. Don’t worry your little head about. You won’t notice it. ”

Yeah, sure, you won’t notice it unless you get out and want to see something before mid afternoon.
So, yeah, I fess up, we say that up here too. But sometimes we are honest about it.

    July 10, 2017 at 1:55 am

@jl: I think there may be a science to it, fog == less than a mile visibility, marine layer == greater than a mile visibility but not perfectly clear. Then again one of the local weather folk is also a comedian so take it with a grain of salt.

@frosty: Yah, see, it’s tough out here. ya know. A lot youse guys thinks we’s sissies out here on the left coast, but we gotta be tough to stand up to the damn marine layer, ya know? Damn straight.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: It’s condensed water vapor that makes fog, or low cloud cover, some mish mash in between when cold marine water coming down from Alaska hits warmer air flowing out of the inland areas. That’s what it is. The behavior is more predictable in SoCal. Here in SF it’s pretty chaotic, how it’s going to act, how low and thick it is, and how long it will take to burn off. Much more often than in SoCal, it never burns off at all, until late afternoon, and when evening winds come off of the ocean (which I think is both a NorCal and SoCal thing). Then the whole day is mucked up.

Edit: sometimes its so bad in SF, visitors mistake what the marine layer is doing for light rain showers in July and early August. Real summer starts here between late August and early September.
