With original bill 'dead,' GOP begins sprint to sell new one https://t.co/V65WSrMIBx
— POLITICO Pulse (@POLITICOPulse) July 10, 2017
Doubt I’m the only one getting a “Throw it to Ted, everybody hates him already” vibe on this one. But if Ted ‘The Anointed One’ Cruz is vain enough to jump at being elected fall guy, who are we Democrats to argue?
… — The original bill is ‘dead.’ That’s what Cassidy said on “Fox News Sunday,” and McCain suggested similarly on “Face the Nation,” with the caveat that “it’s probably going to be dead.”…
— Ted Cruz is top salesman for new plan. The Texas senator will be touting his amendment across the week, suggesting that his and Sen. Mike Lee’s support is contingent on including the provision. The Washington Post reported that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell may ask Cruz to speak to senators as soon as Tuesday…
… Cruz is mounting a defiant defense of his amendment and the need to get an ACA repeal done. “Failure is not an option,” the Texas senator said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
But he’s taking a more confrontational approach to winning support, saying on ABC’s “This Week” that Grassley was borrowing his talking points from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a serious charge in GOP circles.
“The Consumer Freedom option is the key to bringing Republicans together and getting this passed,” Cruz said. “What’s being repeated [by Grassley] is what Chuck Schumer said this week.”…
Kudos to Cole and his fellow West Virginians for spooking Capito-Moore Moore Capito (thank you, JR in WV) into voicing a no, too.
This is the "Ted Cruz has a new Canadian girlfriend" of PR pushes. https://t.co/xyqEZeBmmN

GOP are idiots. This is easy:
1. Repeal Obamacare, full stop. No subsidies. End Medicaid expansion.
2. Mandate state insurance regulations keep the things about Obamacare everyone likes (preexisting conditions, etc) and have mechanisms to cap insurance costs as a fracation of income as a condition of getting Medicaid money.
3. Cut all the taxes now
The end. It’s more than paid for so you can delay the end of subsidies by a couple years to give states time to figure out how to meet the impossible mandate.
California and similar will go full single payer to meet. Other states will get rid of Medicaid rather than comply because they’re run by monsters. Either way, Republicans will blame Democrats for resulting socialism and/or chaos, face zero accountability…

Apparently the GOP does not have sufficient confidence that political con game will work when their party runs the WH and all of Congress.
The political pressure of constituents who are freaking out about health care that will start to go away in two or five years, or in one year wrt to Senate bill, has already spooked enough of the GOP ‘moderates’ to keep McConnell from getting solid support behind it. What will happen with legislation that will strip coverage immediately?
?BillinGlendaleCA
@feebog: Well, if someone HAS to eat the shit sandwich, might as well give it to Ted Cruz.
jl
Upside is that Cruz will be a horrible salesperson for any kind of consensus.
Cruz is so irritating that he will be an instantly and wildly successful incentive to get voters to call Congress and express outrage.
I think Cruz will do a lousy job of trying to disguise the deadly consequences of his plan.
The Cruz plan wrecks a health insurance system that is workable and accessible to the average person just as much as current House and Senate bills, Just uses a slightly different approach to the destruction.
The GOP is in disarray on their health care bill and we need to keep up the pressure. And if they can’t get huge amounts of tax revenue redirected towards the super rich, then their tax reform… er I man massive cut plans will be much more difficult.
Edit: and an interesting question if Cruz has that much stake in his plan succeeding. Hi fanbase is riled up enough by Cruz’ noble failures to keep his career going.

Cruz as salesman definitely gives off a whiff of “when this fails we need a fall guy” but of course that’s no reason for complacency.
I mean, I don’t see how his insufferable faux piety, delivered in that excruciating nasal whine of his, would convince anyone (even his immediate family) of the benefits of his proposed addition to the bill. All the more so since there are no benefits to his idea and the only way around that is to lie and talk about FREEDUMB instead.

One little discussed aspect of the current House and Senate bills is that the CBO likely underestimates their flaws… especially race to the bottom for insurance regulations (or possible death spirals if this doesn’t happen). A mistake IMO that Dems aren’t out there today with their equivalent of whatever biased think tank nonsense Trump is going to trot out. Sets up the CBO reports as being “what folks think on the left” and Trump’s BS as the alternative with the truth somewhere in between. CAP or whatever should’ve been out with a report claiming 50M uninsured or something a month ago.

Checking on Josh Marshall’s twitter, I see news over last couple of hours that Heller, Caputo, and Collins still wandering around wistfully sending out mixed signals that they some how some way could maybe just vote for a changed Senate bill.

@TenguPhule: The GOP leadership is not going to let a real bipartisan and useful bill get to a vote. Such a bill is inconsistent with ginormous tax cuts for super rich and greasing the wheels for further tax slashes in the planned and bogus reform bill.
And Cruz won’t be the salesperson for bipartisan anything. Another one of his noble failures in reactionary viciousness helps him politically, that is his whole political pitch to his base.
At this point, Heller Caputo and Collins have revealed themselves to be political cowards, who just hope they get lost in some shuffle and not be held accountable for anything.
There WAS a respectable start to a bipartisan Senate bill, at least according to BJ’s own David Anderson. Collins was part of that, If she meant a word about voting for a good bill, she would bring that up and try to revive it. She hasn’t, and won’t. She, like Heller and Caputo are looking for an excuse to vote for a fraudulent bill.
I hope their constituents can find a way to have some frank and vigorous comments on their dishonest behavior, and that what they are doing is not escaping notice and will not be forgotten.

So anyone in a state with a GOP Senator who is remotely possibly on the fence, lean on that sucker! Call ’em up every day if possible. I don’t see this as good news. This seems to be a way of getting Cruz/Lee on the bill by letting them add their terrible amendment allowing lousy plans to be sold on the exchanges. They don’t want to fix the ACA. They want to kill it. And they have been told often enough that the only way for that to happen is to fuck over every human being in the states. So that’s what they are going to do.
On a second note, they are republicans, they can’t just fix it, they just know that they have to get rid of it because of whose name is associated with it. There can never again be a time when anything a democrat does that is good, because that might mean that someone (or actually just more than enough someones) will vote democratic. And they will lose. They finally hit the trifecta and they are going to (hopefully!) hurt each other, running to get in line for the money that they just know will come their way for cutting taxes for their bosses. Write down everything you’ve ever heard bad about politicians, and you will have described every current republican politician. Will some of them vote against changing the ACA? Yes, they are the ones that have been told by enough voters in their districts/states that they will end their political careers if they do. They are not doing so because of their courage or their convictions, they will do it for the votes.

Would be interesting if a Maine resident who has a shot at a discussion with Collins or a staffer would ask her what happened to the bipartisan Senate bill that I mentioned above, and which got tentatively good reviews, that suddenly disappeared from view (in other words, that McConnell shut down with prejudice)
If Collins is still wandering around longing for a bill to vote for, what is wrong with reviving that effort? IIRC, Collins name was on it. Would be interesting the hear her response. I predict she would issue boilerplate BS, at which point she should challenged about why she won’t defend her own bill, and why did she let McConnell kill it. Would be interesting to see if she responded with anything of substance. Or she just continues her spineless and unprincipled search for cover, like Caputo and Heller seem to be doing.
Edit: ‘what is wrong with reviving that effort?’ Ans: not enough tax cuts for super duper rich, what was wrong with it. End of story, period, full stop.

@WaterGirl: I may be too late to the party, but Sunny Paris is a nice mix, as are any of their spices used for Indian cooking.

@schrodingers_cat:
How about the “Einstein Boogie”.

@lamh36: Catching up on some threads I missed while I had company this week… I really liked your blog post on Idris. Would love to see him as Bond or Bond-like in his own franchise! Love the gif of him smiling. I love all things Idris. Maybe that’s the litmus test – if you are concerned about a “black” Bond, you shouldn’t be allowed to vote.

@Lapassionara: I’ll go check it out, thanks.

@TenguPhule: Doubtful. Cops, particularly SWAT teams, have been shooting people’s dogs for years. Here’s one particularly notable example where “…a SWAT team raided and held the mayor and his mother-in-law at gunpoint, and shot and killed his two dogs, one while it attempted to run away.” Spoiler: nothing happened to the cops in question.

Anne Laurie:
I’ve seen this before, I’ll see it again. Shelley Moore Capito’s name is not Capito-Moore.
Her father was Arch A Moore Jr. Her husband’s name is Charles Capito. Her mother’s name is/was Shelly Moore.
Her name is Senator Shelly Moore Capito. No punctuation.
I don’t care for her, she’s the daughter of a convicted felon who solicited bribes from state contractors and vendors. She toured Europe with her father and his whole family operating out of a suitcase full of cash, so I expect she knew her father was a thief at the public trough and didn’t care a bit.
She voted as a Congress-woman to pass a bill that was great for banks, and 9 days later her husband Mr. Capito got a great job with Well-Fargo as a VP of some sort.
But as little as I respect her, I get her name correct. You should do the same!
Thanks!

@lamh36: That reminds me: Queen – or at least Freddie Mercury – also contributed to the soundtrack for the 1984 restored version of the movie Metropolis:
