Maybe it’s good news that “white trash” seems to not be universally recognized, because almost no one got it immediately.
On another note, ICYMI, Deray released a “Bonus” episode of Pod Save the People today. And it was fascinating. Terry McAuliffe talked about how VA was warned how heavily armed the Nazis were going to be – they even found cached arms around the city – so the whole goal of the cops was to prevent a gun battle. Put new light on why the cops were so restrained.

McAuliffe said they knew the police and Guard were actually out armed. That the Nazis had bigger guns than they did. More military weapons.
I, too, was surprised the cops didn’t do more. And joined in the chorus of how come white supremacists don’t get military assault like protests when black children are gunned in the streets. But, apparently, after the ACLU succeeded in preventing moving the Nazis to a large, open park outside of town, and the rally was going to happen in a tiny space, in town, full of people, the Governor made a decision not to provoke a gun battle and the cops aimed to prevent any firing. And it worked.
The Nazis are scheduling rallies lots of places across the country. Their goal must be to cause first skirmish in the Civil War.

@? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?: Thanks, I think that is a useful post. I’ve read about other approaches in Europe where fascist, Nazi and communist monuments are paired with counter monuments and outdoor museums to put them in context. The former might be a good idea. For some reason, there are very few monuments to the contributions African-Americans, as slaves and free people, made to the US, and few commemorating the liberation from slavery. Why not? We could use some of those in every state of the union, I think. There are many ways to deal with these monuments besides removing them. Some approaches manage to retain some dignity for the monuments.
But, to be viewed in public as history, they first have to become history. These monuments cannot become history until fascists, Nazis, and white supremacists quit using them as pretexts and political statements as part of their continued attempts to roll back progress in civil rights. I think it has to be an unconditional demand that they do so if these monuments are to remain in public spaces. And that would be a good test for them. Would they be willing to live with a counter monument commemorating African-American slavery, or liberation? Would they be OK with an outdoor museum that explained that a monument was erected not to commemorate Civil War dead, but were actually erected decades later to CELEBRATE the imposition of Jim Crow?
We may be reaching a tipping point where, as we see, citizens may become so sick of them, that they take matters into their own hands and tear them down spontaneously. (Edit: which is a bad idea. They are heavy and someone will get hurt doing it that way.)
The white supremacists polluted their own history by using these monuments as political weapons in an unjust cause for the last 130 years. They need to disavow that effort, and do it right now, otherwise they will all be removed. Up to them. I think they polluted the history, and in a sense erased it to further their cause. They have to fess up and clean up if they want anything to remain at all.
Anyway, up to them. Bottom line: they quit the BS or out all of them go, one way or another.
? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?
@lamh36:
I know. I’m not sure I agree with what the protesters did. The statue should have been removed but not destroyed like that. But those commenters I’m sure would be silent if alt-righters pulled down an MLK statue or something. I doubt their concerns about history or due process are sincere.
After Saturday and Trump’s response to it, how did they think people were going to react? The alt-right and the Trump admin are at odds with much of current American culture. That’s why antifa and other groups are doing these things. They’re pissed. You can only push people so far before they start to lash back.

Just got back from a weekend in northern Wisconsin and haven’t had a chance to go through all the threads so I may be duplicating some things. But here are some of my observations regarding the weekend.
1. The “on many sides” part of Trump’s statement on Saturday was pure Trump. I highly doubt it was in the written remarks. He has a tendency to really concentrate on what he is reading and when he lifts his head and throws something out there, it is usually an ad-lib.
2. The media was taking no prisoners this weekend. Even Fox was, for them, being critical of the President.
3. By this morning Trump was screwed. Any statement he made would seem forced and insincere. So when the alt-right didn’t get all fussy about what he said, it was because they knew he didn’t mean it. And even having made it, there was a lot of push-back from a lot of sources. media and otherwise.
4. There is the old adage “action speaks louder than words.” If Trump meant what he said today than why are Bannon, Miller and Gorka still there? And this is being picked up more and more.
5. I was wondering how long it wuld take for this all to have an impact on his numbers. Turned out wasn’t long at all. Down to 34% approval today in Gallup with 61% disapproval and 5% idiots.
