Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

Bark louder, little dog.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

We still have time to mess this up!

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Let there be snark.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

In my day, never was longer.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

My daughter has a temporary job at an apartment complex, cleaning shit up for incoming university students. Today was move-in day. It didn’t go universally well:

Exactly. It’s DEAD, lady. FFS. That’s the sign of a full-service student housing unit. ?

Move-in day (and move-out day) in Boston are total horror shows, Inevitably a rental truck will go where it’s not supposed to, and get stuck under an overpass blocking traffic for hours. Parents are double and triple parked in front of the dorms. And it seems the date always coincides with a Red Sox game at Fenway right around the corner.
I used to have to fight my way thru to get to my 600-midnight radio shift. Glad that’s over.

You’re only supposed to scream if they move and touch you in the dark. It doesn’t make you popular if you yell at other people. We don’t like them either.
Term is about to start at UF and I have been so busy at work I didn’t even know till tonight they were removing the confederate statue downtown today. Coincidence as the descission was made a month ago. It went off without a hitch. They got the daughters of the confederacy to take it back. The original donors over a century ago. Supposedly going into a small cemetery but they are being quiet about where. Nice news.

Hey Betty, this dude was a ringleader in C-Ville, he’s from Gainesville.

Meet Michael Tubbs. The former Green Beret demolitions expert, his hair grown long now, is vice chairman of the league’s Northeast Florida chapter, and he’s been photographed alongside league president Michael Hill. Tubbs is chaplain to the Florida SCV chapter and heads the SCV’s “Flags Across Florida” campaign, which seeks to line the state’s roadways with Confederate battle flags.

@A Ghost to Most: It’s a good reason to establish your log retention policy early. How long do you need log info? It’s useful to have it for at least a day so you can check into problems, and individual days can be kept if you need them for a good reason. Otherwise, just automatically nuke them after 24 hours. Don’t wait until you get a subpoena, that’s too late. They can’t make you turn over what you don’t have. Don’t keep logs you don’t need, establish a track record of deleting them.

Interview: How Corey Long Fought White Supremacy With Fire via @TheRoot

…Corey Long, a lifelong resident, not only witnessed the town going from peaceful to chaotic, but was captured in one of the most iconic photos taken over the three-day period.

The 23-year-old elder care worker says he went to the counterprotests to have his voice heard. He didn’t want to see racism win and destroy the city he was raised in.

“I went out to voice my opinion. To have my freedom of speech. Just like the racist Nazis who took over my town,” Long said in an interview with The Root.

But what started out as a peaceful protest eventually turned violent. And Long says the cops stood around and did nothing.

“At first it was peaceful protest,” Long said softly as he spoke. “Until someone pointed a gun at my head. Then the same person pointed it at my foot and shot the ground.”

Long said the only weapon he had was a can of spray paint that a white supremacist threw at him earlier, so he took a lighter to the spray paint and turned it into a flame thrower. And a photographer snapped the photo…

Not in defense of the warrant, but this looks like it’s potentially related to the Black Block protests on Inauguration Day. It doesn’t appear to be related to the Women’s March.

My working assumption is that they’re trying to prove a conspiracy case, and want to show pre-Inauguration communications between some or all of the participants via this site, but that’s just a guess. Regardless, they’re casting a very wide net. I’m kind of surprised that the warrant wasn’t limited to communications involving the people they arrested.

    @Ohio Mom:

It must make travel a challenge.

It is by far the least challenging option. Everything I need can fit in the trunk or a large suitcase. Very heavy, though.
Way better than dying of kidney failure, which is where i was headed.

@lamh36: RIP. And to be really shallow for a second, shaping those berets so they look perfect is a pain in the ass. SGT Brooks did a fantastic job.

@lamh36: that’s so messed up. Sounds like the city has a bit of a history…and it puts the lie to their claims that the cops were trying to prevent gun violence.

It’s a miracle that no one was actually shot.

@efgoldman: I recall moving my youngest daughter from Ottawa back home [seven hours drive away] and showing up at the U Haul in Ottawa to pick up my “reserved” trailer. Note the quotes on reserved. Of course it was not there. We pretty much did the entire routine from that Seinfeld episode with me in the starring role. Not getting any satisfaction there, and holding up a line of about fifty other soon to be disappointed customers, I went out in the lot, found a trailer that I could use, asked the kid in the lot if it was good to go, he said yes and got some paperwork, helped me hook it up, and I drove off handing the kid a ten dollar tip for his outstanding service. It was not the trailer I wanted, but it worked out fine.
My wife and daughter were pretty impressed with me, after they stopped laughing of course.

@Kay: I know that Deadbeat Donald is your president, but what could possess these CEOs to debase themselves and provide support for that loser. You would think people at that level would have more self respect than that.
It must be humiliating to have Trump represent all rich and powerful people the way he does. SAD!

I tried making a similar point about some shameful thing President Trump did in these threads not long ago. The just-about-unanimous response from American Juicers was “No, I don’t feel ashamed. I didn’t vote for him.”
