Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Ron DeSantis, the grand wizard, oops, governor of FL

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

He imagines himself as The Big Bad, Who Is Universally Feared… instead of The Big Jagoff, Who Is Universally Mocked.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Everyone is in a bubble, but some bubbles model reality far better than others!

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Not all heroes wear capes.

I conferred with the team and they all agree – still not tired of winning!

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Vice News’ Interview with the Racists

Vice News has made their interviews with some of the leaders and participants from Saturday’s Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville online so everyone can see it, not just HBO subscribers. They describe their reporting as:

On Saturday hundreds of white nationalists, alt-righters, and neo-Nazis traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia, to participate in the “Unite the Right” rally. By Saturday evening three people were dead – one protester and two police officers – and many more injured.

“VICE News Tonight” correspondent Elle Reeve went behind the scenes with white nationalist leaders, including Christopher Cantwell, Robert Ray, David Duke, and Matthew Heimbach — as well as counterprotesters. VICE News Tonight also spoke with residents of Charlottesville, members of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the Charlottesville Police.

From the neo-Nazi protests at Emancipation Park to Cantwell’s hideaway outside Virginia, “VICE News Tonight” provides viewers with exclusive, up-close and personal access inside the unrest.

Here’s the video:

I feel kind of guilty…I’m watching the GLOW episode with the KKK Biddies vs. Welfare Queen/Junk Chain for the umpteenth time (can’t handle another hour of the same “breaking news”), and I’m literally in tears at the sight of the Biddies coming out yelling “White power! Segregation forever!” while Marc Maron on color commentary says in monotone “Helter skelter is here” and something about how it’s never too early to expose children to our country’s ugly racist history.

I don’t think I can watch this. I was so angry last night that I couldn’t sleep. The horrible events and then having this piece of shit president react like this and having others excuse the bad behavior has put me over the edge again. I was with my right-wing religious sister this week for a family visit, and when I was reading some of the reports from Virginia aloud my sister brought up the “fact” that we murder 7 million babies every year. I am beside myself once again. If I didn’t love my sister, it would be so much easier. Ugh.

I skipped through it, did catch the part showing the car hitting the anti-fascists, and landed at the end where Cantwell was removing his three guns and one knife strapped to his body in what appears to be a hotel room … in Roanoke Rapids not Charlottesville. Then Cantwell matter of factly calls people the car hit “animals” and insinuates that they attacked the car, says that “our rivals are a bunch of stupid animals” and couldn’t get out of the way of the car. This segment was beyond appalling.

Here are the White House’s talking points:
The President was entirely correct — both sides of the violence in Charlottesville acted inappropriately, and bear some responsibility.
Despite the criticism, the President reaffirmed some of our most important Founding principles: We are equal in the eyes of our Creator, equal under the law, and equal under our Constitution.
He has been a voice for unity and calm, encouraging the country to “rediscover the bonds of love and loyalty that brings us together as Americans.”

And they are kinda right the media won’t push back as hard as they should but the media is currently activated enough that they will push back far harder than the creators of these talking points are used to. Only the dumbest and safest of Congresscritters will use these points. This entire Whitehouse is amateur hour. Look at the week thing. But she has to lie to herself, because it’s the only way she can justify killing millions of Americans who are already born by cutting off their health insurance.

The speech I have prepared for the “pro-life” people in my life is along these lines:

You were so focused on ending abortion that you never realized that you were making a deal with the devil. Millions of women and their babies are going to die because you decided it was more important to end abortion. You had a choice, and you chose to kill mothers and infants just in case some woman you don’t know wanted an abortion.

@WaterGirl: What does abortion have to do with racists beating up peaceful protesters and killing one of them? I don’t get the connection. Funny how Rightwingers are so “upset” about legal abortions when they hate living human beings if they’re the wrong race, nationality, religion, sexuality, etc. You should have asked your sister if Heather’s death was justifiable because there are legal abortions in this country. Ridiculous.

According to LawNewz, Magistrate Judge James A. Hinkle of Atlanta suburb Gwinnett County was suspended on Tuesday for a Facebook post comparing anti-racist protesters who tore down a Confederate monument in Durham, NC to ISIS.

“The nut cases tearing down Confederate monuments are equivalent to ISIS destroying history,” Hinkle, who used to be mayor of Grayson, Georgia before becoming a magistrate judge, posted on Facebook Tuesday morning.

It wasn’t his only inappropriate post — he’d previously made a post saying those who oppose Confederate monuments should “get over” slavery.

“In Charlottesville everyone is upset over Robert E. Lee statute [sic],” Hinkle’s post read. “It looks like all of the snowflakes have no concept of history. It is what it is. Get over it and move on. Leave history alone – those who ignore history are deemed [sic] to repeat the mistake of the past.”

That so much of it remains standing intact is kind of miraculous. When originally built, iron straps were used to secure the blocks of the vertical columnar elements together. Over time those were pried off to be melted down for re-use, so essentially gravity is all that keeps those blocks aligned.

When career employees of the Environmental Protection Agency are summoned to a meeting with the agency’s administrator, Scott Pruitt, at agency headquarters, they no longer can count on easy access to the floor where his office is, according to interviews with employees of the federal agency.

Doors to the floor are now frequently locked, and employees have to have an escort to gain entrance.

Some employees say they are also told to leave behind their cellphones when they meet with Mr. Pruitt, and are sometimes told not to take notes.

Mr. Pruitt, according to the employees, who requested anonymity out of fear of losing their jobs, often makes important phone calls from other offices rather than use the phone in his office, and he is accompanied, even at E.P.A. headquarters, by armed guards, the first head of the agency to ever request round-the-clock security.

A day after protestors dragged down the statue of a Confederate soldier in Durham, North Carolina, the state’s governor said that all Confederate statues should be removed from state public land.

In a lengthy post on the website Medium, Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat, wrote that, “having served as North Carolina Attorney General for 16 years, I am all too familiar with the racism, bigotry and full-out white supremacy that exist in corners of our society. But it was shocking to watch these elements displayed so publicly  —  venom and hatred shamelessly spewed in epithets.

“We cannot continue to glorify a war against the United States of America fought in the defense of slavery,” he continued. “These monuments should come down.”

Nobody can say they are surprised by his behavior and actually believe what they are saying.

Yes, it is difficult to deny. People want to believe a stable peace is possible. But conflict seems to be ubiquitous.
On a cheerier note, I give you etymology of the word Trump.

    trump (v.2)
“fabricate, devise,” 1690s, from trump “deceive, cheat” (1510s), from Middle English trumpen (late 14c.), from Old French tromper “to deceive,” of uncertain origin. Apparently from se tromper de “to mock,” from Old French tromper “to blow a trumpet.” Brachet explains this as “to play the horn, alluding to quacks and mountebanks, who attracted the public by blowing a horn, and then cheated them into buying ….” The Hindley Old French dictionary has baillier la trompe “blow the trumpet” as “act the fool,” and Donkin connects it rather to trombe “waterspout,” on the notion of turning (someone) around. Connection with triumph also has been proposed. Related: Trumped; trumping. Trumped up “false, concocted” first recorded 1728.
