Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When I was faster i was always behind.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

In after Baud. Damn.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

This blog will pay for itself.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

It’s sad (no lie!) that the New England Cosplay Association had to cancel a long-scheduled public gathering because some nitwit college kid got a permit to let Nazi wannabes swarm Boston Common. But this is serious:

Okay, it’s time to talk about the Juggalo March On Washington. This is a real thing that is happening on September 16th.

— Nate Igor Smith (@drivenbyboredom) August 15, 2017

Juggalos are marching on Washington because the FBI classified juggalos as a gang.

— Nate Igor Smith (@drivenbyboredom) August 15, 2017

However, this gang classification has serious as impact for juggalos who tend to be poor and undereducated already.

— Nate Igor Smith (@drivenbyboredom) August 15, 2017

People have been dishonorably discharged from the military for gang tattoos.

— Nate Igor Smith (@drivenbyboredom) August 15, 2017

Juggalos who get arrested for non-violent offenses are treated as gang members and added to gang lists.

Y’know, I’d have trouble picking Insane Clown Posse songs out of a general metal sound-off, but if the Very Serious Pundits could get past their bourgeois prejudices, the classic Juggalo is exactly the type of disadvantaged, Appalachian-heritage ‘Working Class White’ that they slobber over so endlessly. And it would probably cause at least one cardiac incident if this were pointed out to a roomful of Media Village Idiots…

    Gangs? Really?

    :-/

People have the right to peaceably assemble, have free associations, and all the rest, even if they have weird taste in music and like face paint and weird hand gestures. If they are being hassled for no reason, I hope my ACLU dues are helping to fight for them…

Aren’t you in the Cleveland area? I just googled “Where to watch the eclipse in Cleveland,” and there are a number of places having viewing parties and giving out glasses — of course if you have obligations on Monday like work or school, that might not be possible.

Anyway, if you aren’t in Cleveland, google your town, and if that doesn’t work, take heart, a full eclipse is coming to Ohio in a mere seven years. Who knows, you might pick up a pair of glasses next Tuesday, really cheap — then you’ll be set for 2024.

Don’t yet have an hour-by-hour breakdown; if there’s even a remote chance that skies will clear during the crucial time, I’ll go ahead and hit the road early. But if it looks rainy and stormy throughout the region, I might as well save the gas. Probably won’t make a final decision until Sunday night.

When it was a meme, I listened to the ‘Fucking magnets, how do they work?’ song to learn what was going on. I actually fully approved of the song’s message and did not think it was silly. The point is that very few of us know how the things we use every day work, so we should see the world with wonder because we are surrounded by what might as well be magic.

Having learned how magnets actually do work in chemistry class, I’m still not sure I can remember well enough to say I understand. Something about partially filled electron energy shells allowing polarization.

As for Juggalos as a gang and persecution thereby, I am instinctively on their side, but I would not want to make a decision without knowing why they were qualified as a gang. I know pretty much nothing about this issue, and I hate making decisions without good information.

I’ve heard them described (and I tend to agree) as the world’s most functional, organic anarcho-socialism, without a graduate degree in political science. They’re EXTREMELY weird — as in even goths and punks give them some side-eye — and they’ve turned their weird into solidarity. Think the Yippies and the Merry Pranksters, except with the internet and facepaint and far more organization and axes. A West Englewood resident interviewed Thursday speculated that some burn damage to the Lincoln bust may have been caused by fireworks set off on July 4th.

“People were out partying on the 4th of July and lighting fireworks off of it,” said Christopher Jackson, 22, who lives two blocks from the statue and saw the revelers also light newspapers on fire on top of the statue.

The album with “Miracles” (the “magnets, how do they work” song) was ICP’s big reveal about being devout Christians. (Actually, go check out SNL’s parody song/video). It was probably the period they were at their highest level of general visibility (2009) but they have been around since 1989 and obviously have a significant long time fan base. I personally have never been impressed with their music though I do like some other rap so it is not just about the style. Regardless, the idea the Juggalos should be treated as a gang is ludicrous.

Pence likens Trump to one of his heroes: Teddy Roosevelt

“In Donald Trump, I think the United States once again has a president whose vision, energy and can-do spirit is reminiscent of President Teddy Roosevelt,” Pence said.

“Think about it,” the vice president continued. “Then, as now, we have a builder of boundless optimism, who seeks to usher in a new era of shared prosperity all across this new world. Then, as now, we have a leader who sees things not just as they are but for what they could be. And then, as now, we have a president who understands, in his words, ‘a nation is only living as long as it is striving.’ ”

First Washington and Jefferson, Now Teddy Roosevelt. Is there no president these fuckers will not defile?

For several weeks there have been rumours that Sater is ready to rat again, agreeing to help Mueller. ‘He has told family and friends he knows he and POTUS are going to prison,’ someone talking to Mueller’s investigators informed me. Sater himself added fuel to this fire when he told New York magazine last week: ‘In about the next 30 to 35 days, I will be the most colourful character you have ever talked about. Unfortunately, I can’t talk about it now, before it happens. And believe me, it ain’t anything as small as whether or not they’re gonna call me to the Senate committee.’

Sater and Manafort together would pose a deadly threat to Trump’s presidency if they testify that Russian money in his businesses led to information being exchanged with Russian intelligence.

The Republicans who want to legalize running over protesters

This year, Republican lawmakers in at least six states have proposed bills designed to protect drivers who strike protesters. The first bill was introduced in North Dakota in January, and similar bills have since come under consideration in North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Texas and Rhode Island.

Just a reminder, the GOP wants to make this shit legal.

The North Dakota bill would shield drivers from civil and criminal liability. The bill’s sponsor, state Rep. Keith Kempenich, perversely suggested that shielding drivers who kill protesters was a necessary anti-terrorism measure.

Protesters who blocked cars were committing “an intentional act of intimidation — the definition of terrorism,” he told the Los Angeles Times.

Yes, they want to kill us under color of law.

In five of the six states where bills were introduced, the legislation would shield drivers who hit protesters or demonstrators only. Drivers who kill pedestrians who are not out exercising their First Amendment rights would still be subject to the usual criminal and civil liabilities.

I hope my ACLU dues are helping to fight for them…

I haven’t given the ACLU any money since they supported Citizens United. There is an opinion piece up on the NY Times site concerning the ACLU’s current conception of the right to Free Speech.
“The A.C.L.U. Needs to Rethink Free Speech” by K-Sue Park
    You might find it interesting.

There has always been a tension between free speech and various groups whose goals are repugnant to what I consider decent people. But supporting Citizens United has damaged and will continue to damage this country far beyond issues of free speech. It is ironic though that the main beneficiaries of Citizens United are people who ultimately will support candidates who will curtail free speech, not to mention other rights like voting. This is one of those cases where the cliche about the Constitution not being a suicide pact has some merit.

I think the ACLU does a lot of good, but with finite resources I have to choose carefully to whom I donate money. Support for Citizens United pushed the ACLU off the list.

If necessary, the Nazis could easily plant agent provocateurs in face paint if needed. There is precedent.

@Felonius Monk: It rhymes, it rhymes.

Lately when I have to call him something, one name I’ve resorted to is Toothpick.

    @debbie:

I haven’t heard their music as it is but have been scared to death since I was a pre-teen seeing their promo posters & album covers around on CD shops and other ancillary places; I’m not a fan of horror core/black or heavy metal in general but I know from reading up on them they’re vehemently annti-racist, anti-misogyny and anti-homophobic in their personal politics and off-stage theatrics (an anomaly for those genres)!

They’re most famous for a longtime beef they had with Eminem, over what I’m not sure @ all.

@TriassicSands: I wasn’t aware of their arguments for Citizens United, and I do find it disturbing, but I’m not surprised by it. I think it’s wrong, and too narrow a reading of “free speech”, but they are and have always been absolutists about the First Amendment.

I don’t like all of the positions that the EFF takes either, for similar reasons.

But I support both organizations with annual donations. It’s not much, so I’m sure they wouldn’t miss it either way. I think on the whole both do more good than otherwise, and there are instances when their participation has been vital in protecting our rights.

But I agree that Citizens United was a very bad decision…

    FWIW.

    Thanks.

    Cheers,
    Scott.
