Man, is it just me or most modern cars boring and sucky, style wise? I swear, I see a model I like only to find out it’s been discontinued like 6 years ago. Or they got an ugly redesign. I feel like this always happens to me. And I don’t want to get a used car either. Don’t have the capital, a few grand, to blow on a used car. Wouldn’t want to either. Last thing I need is for it breakdown while I’m driving it.
All I want is new car to lease that I like and can afford.
Suzanne
That was amazing.

@NotMax: Spawn the Elder is a big fan of “Dear Evan Hansen”. It won the Best Musical Tony. “A Doll’s House, Part 2” is also supposed to be really good.

@Omnes Omnibus:
A new car, prefably a sedan. A two-door sports truck would be cool too. My price range is 220/mo or lower; less than 200 would be great. I like the way the Ford Focus used to look: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Focus_(second_generation,_North_America)
For a truck, something like this:

? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?
@Omnes Omnibus:
Thanks. Looking at the Fiesta now, it looks good for what’s being priced. Dirt cheap for an automatic. I got enough time to decide anyway, a year, so no rush. I don’t know why but I tend to like smaller cars like the Fiesta sedan. When I was looking at Jeeps, I really wanted the Patriot, but it was discontinued. I’ll def consider it.
frosty
@? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?: All new cars look the same because of aerodynamics. It’s much cheaper and quicker to boost the mileage by 10% by reshaping the body than by redesigning the engine and transmission. Although they’re doing that too. The wind tunnel makes them all look the same.

New cars are hideous. The high back end, the high belt line, sloping rear windshield, ugly grills–this is an era of ugliness. And lousy visibility and ergonomics, too.
? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?

Now that I think about it, a lot of older cars back in the day, judging from old pictures, looked the same as each other too. Probably nothing new.

@? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?: I don’t think you’ll ever see that Ford Focus look again. The Mazda Protege, precursor to the 3, looked similar. I read somewhere (could have been here) that the upswept rear windows and terrible rear quarter sight lines are because of a recent increase in rollover protection regs that caused mfrs to beef up the rear roof pillars.
I wnder if we’ll end up with more fatalities from blind spot accidents than rollovers.

Whitewall tires and chrome bumpers. Circular headlights and tail lights.
frosty
@? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?: Funny, the 2nd gen is the only one I don’t like. The engineers really went to work on the 3rd. They claimed 40mpg highway and I occasionally beat that on a tank. (Commute is mostly interstate).
ETA: I can’t stand all the electronics, particularly the keyless start. Every wire they put in a car is another potential failure mode.
Yarrow
@NotMax: I didn’t realize Abrams was directing. I think if you went just kind of expecting it to be funny but not great you could have a good time.
Are you planning on seeing several shows?
Fair Economist
@frosty:
I wonder that too. It’s much harder to spot cars in my blind spot now than in my previous car. With mirrors properly set and peripheral vision I didn’t have a traditional blind spot – I could see something of any car in the adjacent lanes. Now, there’s no way to do that. Same make, but one before the beefed-up pillars and one after.

Not sold on Dear Evan Hanson. It will have a long life as a high school musical. After The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and Hand of God, I’m kind of over the mentally ill teenage boy story.

My yr old Ford Focus has a blind spot mirror. Took about 2 days to get used to it. It’s just a little spot mirror in the outer corner of the side mirrors. Doesn’t get in the way and works wonders for blind spots. The car had backup camera and parking alarm and I told them I didn’t want it, so they took it off the price. Turns out it is great! And yes you can turn off the alarm if you want. Would be nice if the picture was bigger but I’m used to backing with mirrors so it works out. I get the EPA mileage which is far, far, far better than my last vehicle, a full size V8 van. Could it be better? Sure what car couldn’t? But it’s still one of the better cars that I’ve owned or leased and there have been quite a few of those.

The dies for the earlier cars weren’t build using computers. All duplicated using models. I worked on Barbie doll molds (among many other things) as a teenager and we made them completely from models. Not live models, no one is built like that in real life, including the wife of the owner of Mattel, who the doll was supposed to be fashioned after.

@Ruckus: “The dies for the earlier cars weren’t build using computers. All duplicated using models.”
Only prototype dies were made from models, by Metal Model Makers. (My husband was one, until the carpal tunnel got too bad.) Production tooling was developed by Die Designers, who drew the blueprints for the tooling on drafting boards. (My dad was one.) So people could handle designing dies with curves, but early CAD systems could not.
