What happened to all that Right Wing anger about the costs of Presidential travel? https://t.co/GL6pND9RM0
— Dan Pfeiffer (@danpfeiffer) August 21, 2017
The Secret Service is broke from ferrying a family of kleptocrats around to their chain of $200k-buys-direct-access-to-the-President clubs.

Not really that he has a large family, it’s that he has more of his family getting details. Adult children of POTUS typically don’t. https://t.co/SkXsmuE0mA

Under Trump, 42 people have Secret Service protection, including 18 family members. Under Obama, it was only 31. https://t.co/1dZyVpDgnT
— Daniel W. Drezner (@dandrezner) August 21, 2017
But seriously the Secret Service running out of $$ means Congress needs to appropriate more. Which means Hill Dems have even more leverage
— Will Caskey (@WillCaskey) August 21, 2017
Dems should propose a provision that to qualify for Secret Service protection you have to make public your 5 most recent federal tax returns https://t.co/bkQ2NFb27J
— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) August 21, 2017
We pay for Obama's travel so he can fundraise millions so Democrats can run on lies. Then we pay for his golf.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 14, 2014
Somehow the Secret Service didn't run out of money the first 7 months of the Obama administration. pic.twitter.com/KFcQzt2giX

Secret Service has enough funding to perform duties through September https://t.co/nRNQ0qh0wS pic.twitter.com/IiqyIfmTyF

should be enough time for trump to move out tbh https://t.co/Ff63RKRhA8

Doesn’t Mango Mussolini still have his private security thugs, because the Secret Service wouldn’t know how to protect anybody, right?
Who’s paying for them?
Keith P.
If it wasn’t obvious before why the Secret Service moved out of Trump Tower, here ya go!
Major Major Major Major
My god, there really is an old trump tweet for everything.
schrodingers_cat
WTH is a local milk steak?
Feebog
Maybe the solution is for congress to change the law. Why do tweedledee, Tweetledum and Lucretia need protection underwritten by the taxpayer? They are all supposedly millionaires, they can furnish their own protection.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@schrodingers_cat: conflation of trump’s “local milk people”, IIRC from his phone call with the PM of Australia?, and a joke from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia– that guy likes to change his handle a lot
Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.)
I really don’t think he’s going to last until the end of the year. This guy is now so poisonous that nobody wants to have anything to do with him but the people who have crawled up his ass so far that they have nowhere else left to go. I think he’s going to pull up stakes and, like Sarah Palin, he’s quitting because he isn’t a quitter, and only quitters keep at the job until it’s done.
Mnemosyne
You know what the point of raising the debt ceiling is? To pay for shit like this.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Princess Tackycrap is up on the dais.
OT: Did Ryan reschedule his CNN town hall?
TenguPhule
@efgoldman:
I believe he stole the funding from his campaign contributions.
TenguPhule
@Mnemosyne:
Hey now! Don’t give the Anti-debt Ceiling people more ammunition.
TenguPhule
@Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.):
I don’t think we’re going to make it to the end of the year at this rate.
Aussiesmurf
Please. Please. Please.
The Secret Service budget is being blown not just because of payments to Secret Service members BUT BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO PAY TRUMP RENTAL AT HIS PROPERTIES AND FOR RIDES ON HIS PLANE.
Trump is literally making a profit on the agents who are there to protect him. You’d think that he’s forego rental at his own proper-HAHAHAHAHAHA.
Sorry, couldn’t finish that last sentence without cracking up.
oatler.
“It just killed Jimmy to hand over the money. He’d rather whack ’em then pay them!!”
TenguPhule
@Major Major Major Major:
There are no coincidences.
TenguPhule
Can Secret Service Agents be forced to work without being paid?
Guess we might find out.
Adam L Silverman
@efgoldman: He has his personal hitter as Director of Oval Office Operations. The Trump Organization has its own corporate security, which was formerly run by his now Director of Oval Office Operations.
khead
Make up comment for “That’s too bad.”
A Ghost to Most
@Adam L Silverman: So, his minder, then.
Major Major Major Major
@TenguPhule: that’s true, but not in the way you mean.
Keith P.
@schrodingers_cat: Locally-sourced milk steak? FWIW, milk steak is typically boiled over hard with a side of jellybeans, raw.
Adam L Silverman
@A Ghost to Most: No, hitter. Jared and Ivanka are the minders.
A Ghost to Most
@TenguPhule:
“This party is just gettin’ started!”

@Adam L Silverman: Who knew treason could be so complicated?

Of course, the Secret Service Director had to walk back his comments later in the day

In the earlier thread, Yutsano, who’s been a federal employee for many years, says eventually they have to (get paid), according to law.
Jinchi
The real absurdity is that Trump has the Secret Service paying him for the privelege of protecting him.
Trump’s clubs charge 60k to rent carts to Secret Service as agency runs out of money
encephalopath
So is it possible for someone to determine how much of that Secret Service budget got paid directly to Trump properties?
catclub
@Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.):
yeah! right!
and a whole lot of people here also were convinced he would not make it from May 2016 to the election! he was too out of shape to stand the campaign. I know cause I wrote it then.
NorthLeft12
The Secret Service agent pay cap is $160K? That is some pretty serious coin for that line of work IMO.
Mnemosyne
@encephalopath:
You’d think that some enterprising reporter would be willing to check that out, but apparently they’re all like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
WaterGirl
@Jinchi: He charges the Secret Service hundreds of thousands of dollars at the same that Trump brags about the fact that he didn’t take his salary for the quarter. Whoop-de-doo.
WaterGirl
@NorthLeft12: $160,000 a year to be willing to die to protect someone else. That doesn’t seem too high to me.
Matt McIrvin
The situation in 2014 was completely different. Then, Trump wasn’t making money off of it. That changes the whole moral equation!
Omnes Omnibus
@efgoldman: Compelling someone to work without pay has a 13th Amendment problem.
Seth Owen
@TenguPhule: They already are working without being paid. Presumably they will eventually get paid, although it apparently requires special legislation. When it’s happened before, Congress coughed up the dough. But that was back in the day when Congress more of less functioned. I venture no opinion on how this will work out.
WaterGirl
@Omnes Omnibus: I’ll bet, though, that in the Secret Services if you said you wouldn’t work without getting paid you would never move up to a more coveted position.
Ruckus
@NorthLeft12:
Would you take $160K to jump in front of a bullet for drumpf?
Think about that for a while and get back to me.
Tehanu
@TenguPhule:
Well, we know that Dump and his supporters think slavery was a good thing.
Wyatt Derp
Let’s see… The Secret Service is running out of money because Trump takes golf vacations every week…Yep, just need to come up with more money. Don’t see any other solution there.
