On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
This weekday feature is for Juicers who are are on the road, traveling, or just want to share a little bit of their world via stories and pictures. So many of us rise each morning, eager for something beautiful, inspiring, amazing, subtle, of note, and our community delivers – a view into their world, whether they’re far away or close to home – pictures with a story, with context, with meaning, sometimes just beauty. By concentrating travel updates and tips here, it’s easier for all of us to keep up or find them later.
So please, speak up and share some of your adventures and travel news here, and submit your pictures using our speedy, secure form. You can submit up to 7 pictures at a time, with an overall description and one for each picture.
You can, of course, send an email with pictures if the form gives you trouble, or if you are trying to submit something special, like a zipped archive or a movie. If your pictures are already hosted online, then please email the links with your descriptions.
For each picture, it’s best to provide your commenter screenname, description, where it was taken, and date. It’s tough to keep everyone’s email address and screenname straight, so don’t assume that I remember it “from last time”. More and more, the first photo before the fold will be from a commenter, so making it easy to locate the screenname when I’ve found a compelling photo is crucial.
Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!
Lots of color today, and tomorrow, some great stuff from Raven. Friday, a smorgasbord.
Today, pictures from valued commenter ?BillinGlendaleCA.
Following up on our previous visit to Gyeonbokgung and Changgyeonggung, today’s pics are from Changdeokgung. It is adjacent to Changgyeonggung to it’s east and is a few block east itself from Gyeongbokgung. Changdeokgung was the primary residence of the kings so it has more of a homey feel and also includes a large garden(Piwon) to it’s north. It’s also better preserved that the other two palaces, since Changgyeonggung was turned into the city zoo during the Japanese colonial period and much of Gyeonbokgung was destroyed during that time period. I visited this palace alone since madame was laid up with what we later found out was a gall bladder attack.
Technical Note: Again these pictures were shot with a Cannon Sure-Shot Ace and are scanned from the negatives at 7200dpi, producing about a 70mp file. The day was cloudy, so I’ve darkened and added some color to the sky in Photoshop.
All pictures were taken in May 1989.
Geumcheongyo
Changdeokgung, Seoul, Korea
Geumcheongyo is a stone bridge(the oldest in Korea) built across the north/south stream east of the palace proper. It was built in 1411.
Injeongjeon
Changdeokgung, Seoul, Korea
This is the palace’s throne hall that was used for coronations and receiving foreign dignitaries.
Inside of Injeongjeon
Changdeokgung, Seoul, Korea
While the photographic quality of this picture leaves much to be desired, I’ve included it since it shows the interior and that what looks like a 2-story building on the outside is a single story with high ceilings.
Samsamwa
Changdeokgung, Seoul, Korea
This building was part of the Crown Prince’s quarters.
Buyongji
Changdeokgung, Seoul, Korea
This is a pond that is surrounded by several pavilions. It’s one of the most beautiful parts of the “Secret Garden”
Bullomun
Changdeokgung, Seoul, Korea
This is a stone gate, the gate of long life. Everyone that passes though it will have a long life. It is at the entrance to the Aeryeonji pond. There is a replica of this gate at the Gyeongbokgung subway stop.
Aeryeongeong
Changdeokgung, Seoul, Korea
This is a pavilion on the Aeryeonji pond.
What’s really funny about this, is that I thought that this was taken at Buyongji until I started writing this up. The trees don’t much up right and there’s no island. I’ve been using a guidebook for the palace to help refresh my memory of where pictures were taken in the palace.
Thank you so much ?BillinGlendaleCA, do send us more when you can.

p.a.
Beautiful!
It’s good to be the king. Bigger houses. Better schools. Higher grades. ??♀️
?BillinGlendaleCA
@p.a.: Thanks. I think it’s a bigger apartment, not like the White House, it’s a dump.
eclare
Great pictures, think I like the first best.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@eclare: The bridge?
OzarkHillbilly
Nice.
eclare
@?BillinGlendaleCA: yes, is that forsythia?
?BillinGlendaleCA
@eclare: I’m not sure.
@OzarkHillbilly: Thanks.
Baud
Bill is bringing it with his pictures.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Baud: The next set will be from this century.
raven
Nice, we didn’t have a lot of trees up north.
Mustang Bobby
BillinGlendaleCA, do you know when these buildings were constructed? I’m in awe of the artistry and architecture.
Baud
@?BillinGlendaleCA: I’d be really impressed if they were from the next century.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Mustang Bobby: They’ve been built and rebuilt after fires and the Japanese destroying them(and not just during the colonial period). Some were moved from other palaces during the colonial period as well. Most probably date from the 1700’s and 1800’s, but I think there was quite a bit of damage during the Korean War as well. Remember Seoul changed hands 4 times(I think) during the war.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Baud: You’d need Obama’s time machine for that.
JPL
Wonderful pictures. My favorite is the secret garden with the pond. All of them are lovely though.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@JPL: That’s probably my favorite as well. Thanks.
Mustang Bobby
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Thanks.
debbie
Love them all, but that first one takes the prize for me. The stone bridge reminds me of spring in Central Park.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@debbie: Thanks.
rikyrah
South Korea looks beautiful.
Thanks Bill?
?BillinGlendaleCA
@rikyrah: Thanks, it’s really a pretty place. I’ll put together a couple more series of pics from other parts of the country, I still need to rescan some of them.
bystander
Great pics! Thanks, BiG. The springtime secret garden pics are really evocative.

@bystander: Spring and Fall are the best times to go, Summer’s too hot and sticky and Winter’s fucking cold. Though I’ve seen some winter pictures that look magical. There’s one thing I didn’t admit to in the text; in the throne room exterior, I changed the color of the grass. In the original, it was brown.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Quinerly: ☺
satby
Beautiful Bill!
MomSense
Oh my, Buyongi is soooo beautiful. And the way those tree limbs gracefully shade the bridge is so lovely. I want to step right in to these photos, Bill. Beautiful.
Waratah
Lovely Photos Bill. I have always wished I had the patience to have gardens like these. They always seem so peaceful. Next spring I am going to plant a Japanese maple.
scav
@eclare: The bush might be Kerria japonica — it’s native to Korea.
scav
@scav: forsythia is apparently native to Korea too, so you’ve got options.

Very nice. I’ve always been tempted to try to arrange an extended trip to Asia, my parents went and enjoyed it greatly.
I sent Alain a set of pix from Monday’s celestial show, hope it’s acceptable for the Jackals. Just some Kentucky country trip photos, ya know. Roadside wide spot with a tiny bit of shade.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@satby: Thanks.
@MomSense: As I mentioned there’s a replica in the subway, I have a picture of it with myself and madame; however it was damaged in processing and I need to fix it. I’ll put it up in comments in one of the future OTR threads.
@J R in WV:
Do it! We stopped in Tokyo on the way to Korea on our second trip. Madame really wants to see Nara since her mother was born and raised there(it was during the colonial period). I’d love to see more, but that window has closed.
Please do send out some pics from Monday.
