Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Consistently wrong since 2002

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

“Alexa, change the president.”

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Late Evening Musical Interlude Open Thread

Last week Warner Brothers/DC Comics released their most recent DC Animated Universe film. This post is really not about the film. It is set in the Batman: The Animated Series continuity from the 1990s. So classic Bruce Timm art. The story is whacked. In the middle there are two musical numbers (story, whacked…). The first is very good, the second not so much*. As a musical interlude I give you the first one, Two Face hench twins, Max and Min, voiced by Rob Paulsen (and Rob Paulsen) covering Don’t Pull Your Love. The characters were originally voice by Mickey Dolenz during the series run. Feel free to post quirky covers in the comments. And see how many Bat villain hench people you can identify if that’s your thing. Otherwise musical open thread!

* The second cover is Melissa Rauch as Harley Quinn doing a bad cover, and losing the bad accent she’s attempting for the character half way through, of Hanging on the Telephone.

Decided to try my first yellow watermelon today. I plan to make watermelon gazpacho tomorrow. This one is very very sweet, I hope the Serrano pepper balances that.
I always hope that the hurricanes are less than expected.

@Waratah: If I can get a sweet yellow one it is my preferred watermelon for making a watermelon salsa. Balances the heat really nicely.

@Waratah: You’re welcome. Because the watermelon will give off liquid quickly make it far enough ahead for the flavors to mingle, but not so far ahead that the watermelon breaks down completely.

Our next door neighbors are going to a nephew’s wedding near Corpus Christi in late October, assuming there’s anything left standing. I read “Issac’s Storm” by Eric Larsen several years ago, about the hurricane that basically wiped out Galveston around 1900.

@Mike in NC: It’s going to take a while to rebuild. If they get the max on the predicted rain, 40 inches, there is going to be a lot of damage. Especially since the storm has now only moving at 7 mph.

Already speculation on the national 6:30pm news that gas prices ‘might go up 15-20 cents per gallon’ if the refineries are hit badly enough. (Or, as they didn’t say out loud, if the oil barons can weasel an excuse out of the damage to do exactly what they were gonna do in September regardless.)

    Life in a red state:

In nearby Aransas Pass, 66-year-old Mike Taylor said he was resigned to riding out the storm in his one-story house just a few blocks from the water. As part of routine hurricane preparations, the town maintains a list of residents who need help in leaving. Taylor, who does not own a car and lives with his disabled 40-year-old son, said he thought he was on the list.

    No one came for him.

“Now, I am just out trying to find some groceries,” said Taylor, who was trudging along Route 35 in a yellow raincoat, even though all the grocery and convenience stores appeared closed. “I lost my driver’s license because I am nearly blind.”

@Anne Laurie: It’s going to be ugly. 11 million people in the path of the storm. Even uglier is that a lot of the damage is going to in places where flood insurance isn’t required because those areas don’t flood (under normal circumstances). Going to be a lot of homeowners and business owners who will have no insurance to deal with the damage.

Relatedly, what on Earth was Bruce Timm thinking with this latest movie? In addition to this scene with its blatant homoeroticism between identical twins culminating in a shot that looked for all the world as if one of them was giving the other a blowjib, there’s another clip I’ve seen in which Harley essentially rapes Nightwing!
