Rep. Steve King to @ChrisCuomo: "I don't agree that profiling is wrong" https://t.co/Tk64moV9b1 https://t.co/maTuEAyORt

.
When people refer to Trump as “America’s Racist-in-Chief”, Rep. Steve King is personally affronted. That’s HIS title, dammit! It’s not profiling when you Right-fully assume every person of color is inherently guilty…
Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) on Monday defended former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona, who was convicted of criminal contempt of court for refusing to halt his immigration patrols but pardoned by President Trump.
“I don’t agree that profiling is wrong,” King told CNN’s Chris Cuomo…
“There’s a difference between racial profiling and broader profiling with all of the descriptions that are there,” King argued in the Monday night interview.
“And I say it’s wrong, too, and the Justice Department has issued a directive that says you shall not racially profile if that’s the only component.”
DISGUSTING AND HEARTLESS. Steve King on CNN going after #DACA children for not turning in their parents. What kind of person says that?

Let’s be honest here. On this issue and other similar issues, Steve King is just the designated asshole who goes on TV and loudly says what the rest of them believe. At this point, I have absolutely no doubts that a clear majority of the republicans in Congress would vote in favor of gulags for minorities if they thought they could get it passed. King may come up from a district so very racist that he has to let his freak flag fly on TV all the time, but the majority of his brethren would cheerfully say the exact same things if they were running from his District. I would not be the least bit surprised to hear that my local rep, Trent Kelly (MS-01), believes the exact same sorts of things, but the makeup of his district means that he can only say them when he’s giving speeches before Concerns Citizens Councils and not on national TV.

Aside from not understanding what is so evil about parents who brought you here for a better life that you need to report them as a Dreamer, I wanted to drop by for some move advice on a considerable amount of heart ache I have right now.
I talked about getting broken up with, and it was a friendly break, but it was sudden and I had gotten swept up in things. My rational brain is trying to distract and motivate me, but my emotional self is sapping my focus and keeps circling back to what I would be doing with her right now if we were still together. It’s only been a week so I hope it gets better but I need to find a way to get my appetite and sleep patterns back because I’m traveling abroad this Thursday and don’t want to do so with half my brain either roiling or rotting from lack of sustenance.
Does anyone have any recommendations to level out my appetite or a good goal I can set to get me through the next 2 days until I travel and meet up with my family (who I’m sure will be helpful)?

You’re lovely but it’s not for sure
That I won’t ever change

Though my love is true
[Chorus:]
I’m like a bird, I’ll only fly away

(and baby all I need for you to know is)
I’m like a bird, I’ll only fly away
I don’t know where my soul is , I don’t know where my home is
All I need for you to know is
Your faith in me brings me to tears
Even after all these years
And it pains me so much to tell
That you don’t know me that well
And though my love is rare
Though my love is true
[Chorus]
It’s not that I wanna say goodbye
It’s just that every time you try to tell me that you love me
Each and every single day I know
I’m going to have to eventually give you away
And though my love is rare
And though my love is true
Hey I’m just scared

Let’s be very clear about what happened here: Arpaio ignored rape and child molestation cases so he could push his racial profiling agenda Maricopa County has had to pay out tens of millions of dollars in settlements to rape and child molestation victims whose cases were never properly investigated. In the truly horrifying Morrison case, a young girl was repeatedly raped by her uncle for three years after the abuse was first reported to the sheriff’s department and they found semen. They didn’t bother to follow up on that case for THREE FUCKING YEARS.
Someone needs to ask Steve King why he supports child molesters. Why does he think that child molesters should be allowed to roam free?

I was never a huge fan of the song myself, but in both its melody and lyrics it plucked that homesickness string just fine.

@Paul W.: I’m one to read any article about help sleeping. Several months ago, I read an article about ways to help fall asleep and stay asleep. The article gave a lot of the same advice in other articles (don’t do anything in bed but sleep, don’t fall asleep to the TV, etc…), but one helpful tidbit was that just laying there resting is good. Not as good as sleep, but better than tossing/turning and thinking about how you’re not sleeping. I found this helpful as my problem was waking up a few hours before I needed to and not being able to go back to sleep. Once I adopted the strategy of not worrying that I wasn’t falling back asleep, I felt more rested the next day regardless of whether or not I was able to fall back asleep for those last two hours. Hang in there and think about your travels as a good escape from your current heartbreak.

Somewhat OT: we had a special election here in Fairfax County VA today (suburb of DC). School Board which is technically non-partisan but frequently candidates ask for and get endorsements from the local parties. We had 4 candidates, 2 unaffiliated, one terrific candidate in Karen Keys-Gamarra endorsed by the local Dems, and one candidate who was endorsed by the GOP. Interesting fun fact: the R candidate was also endorsed by Renaissance Media, which I believe is the media arm of Jared Taylor’s American Renaissance – a white supremacist organization. The R candidate did not disavow the endorsement.
The reason we had a special election is because a R-aligned member of the Board (At-Large) resigned because her husband has a new overseas job. If she had waited 2 weeks to announce her resignation the election to replace her would have taken place in November when we elect a new Governor, Lt. Gov., and Att. Gen. as well as all House of Delegates members. But she didn’t wait because the local party wanted a special election on August 29th, a day after school started, hoping that hardly anyone would turn up to vote.
Well, it didn’t work out as they hoped. We had 10% turnout, which I know doesn’t sound like much but is better than the 4% some pros were predicting.
The D-aligned candidate won the seat, by a 2 to 1 margin over the R-alligned candidate. Fairfax County has been trending more Blue over the 10 years I’ve been involved but this is terrific. She won almost all the precincts currently held by R-alligned Board members. It is an incredibly good sign for November here in Virginia. I’m really tired since I had to get up at 5am today, but wanted to share some good news when we can all really use some.

This will likely sound beyond stupid, but this has worked for me after a serious loss, when I needed to stop my brain from going round and round or stop my brain from going over the same thing over and over. It’s all about interrupting the thought process that is not helping me. It’s easy to say “try to think of something else”, but really hard to do.
So I do easy stuff. I make a list in my head of all the people who care about me, or all the people who have ever been important to me. Or I start listing off all the different kinds of animals I can think of. Or articles of clothing. Or go through the alphabet – a is for apple, b is for bastard, c is for cantaloupe, d is for dungeon, etc. Make a list in your head of all the nyms you have ever seen on BJ. Make a list in your head of all the crazy stuff that Cole has ever written about on BJ. All the books you’ve ever read. Anything to keep your brain from spinning and thinking about your loss all the time.
If you’re like me you’ll end up distracted and then the next thing you know, your brain is spinning again. Just start over, A is for algebra or W is for WaterGirl, etc.
Another thing you can do to help yourself get through this is to write a goodbye letter. (Which you will not send.) If you can’t face the thought of a goodbye letter at this point, try a thank you letter. (Which you will also not send.) That can be easier to face. Thank her for all the good stuff. Thank you for the fun times at the lake. Thank you for sharing your family with me. I am really gonna miss your mom, or your dog, or your apartment.
What you’re going through is really hard; the future you pictured can be one of the hardest things to let go of. So write the thank you letter and get it all out. Or write the here’s what I am going to miss about you letter. (Which you will not send.) Or write the FUCK YOU letter, if that’s where you’re at. (Which you will not send.) And don’t be too strict with yourself – if you choose the thank you letter, don’t worry if a bit of fuck you sneaks in there. Just write it all down and you might find that the act of doing that might just help you process your loss.
That gives you a time and place to dwell on the situation without it sucking up your every waking moment. It can also help you put that aside – I’ll think about that later when I work on the letter some more. And when it’s not writing time, then try the “interrupt the thought process” stuff above.
You have to do your part, but you will get through this. If you let yourself, you can come out stronger on the other side. Hang in there.

Anybody points that the meatpacking corporations, and their Repub enablers, deliberately broke those unions, so that they could reduce wages to the point where only desperate immigrants would attempt to live on them… and they’re dismissed as lying liberal Democrats, or worse.

They said there’d be no math.
On Saturday, I was explaining to the kid that the first thing you need to know about taking Milky Way pic(I gave her a tripod for her b-day) is that you need to figure out what the maximum exposure time is, so you don’t get star trails. So I told her about the rule of 500(500/focal length of the lens you’re using/crop factor). She said, “dad, there’s math in photography?”

Not necessarily if you’re hearing it from an orthopedic surgeon.
One of my oldest and closest friends is an eye surgeon. I’ve talked with him extensively about medical care in the US in general, and more recently about my specific troubles. He relayed the story of a back problem he had some time ago, for which he sought several opinions. And though he knows more about the subject than I do, and he trusted the people who were giving him opinions, his key question was “how objective can you be if you’re recommending a $65,000 procedure?”

Thanks for the advice on traveling, gonna have to try the small meals throughout the day. Exercise and changing patterns all sounds promising, so we’ll try it out!
I’ve been puttering around packing the last hour or so, found the movie “Drinking Friends” and it’s totally different than I thought it would be in a fantastic way. Nothing ever felt like the human to human betrayal they capture here, I got out of something painful but honest and… man letting go of time and ideas is hard, and the hardest last part will be not resenting whoever/whatever she goes onto next.
As an aside, and as a huge sci-fi fan, I have always wished we could live out multiple timelines because I am of the opinion there is no 100% right way to live life, and wouldn’t it be great to travel down the many roads of “what if?” I’m pretty sure part of the reason I have had other relationships that went too long, I just want to know “what if!?”

@Ruckus: Not a Quaker myself, but raised in large part by Quaker grandparents and great grandparents. Most of the younger (under 50) Quakers I know don’t use the phrase very often, but my great grandmother and her acquaintances used it pretty frequently.
This is a pretty interesting discussion of the Quaker concept of “light” as an expression of the divine / the shared universal goodness that they believe exists in all people.
Ruckus
@Mel:
I’ve only met a couple of Quakers more than about 5-6 yrs older than me, most everyone was around my age so that may explain it. And I’m not saying that I haven’t heard the expression before, but it has been a long time. I wonder if it also may be that most of my contact has been in meetings, and I don’t recall ever hearing that in a meeting.
ETA the shared universal goodness that they believe exists in all people.

@Ruckus: I’ve been to meetings with my grt grandma when I was a small child, and some since with Quaker friends, and I’ve never heard it in meetings either.
I usually heard my grt grandmother say it in direct conversation if she was concerned or worried about someone. I wonder if it was a generational expression that just started drifting out of the lexicon over the course of the past couple of generations?
She and my other grandparents / greats all lived well into their 90s. My grandmother knew her great grandmother well, and grandma’s grt grandmother (born in the 1820s) was still alive while my grandmother was a toddler.
It was an unusual experience, growing up surrounded by those women. They were kind and deeply thoughtful, but also quite fearless about taking action and never hesitating to jump in to the fray to fight for desperately needed change. I got to hear first hand stories of suffragette marches and protest fasts, Civil Rights protests and voter registration drives, and second and third hand accounts of the legs of the Underground Railroad network which ran from Kentucky up to Philadelphia and New York.
It felt like I was straddling two centuries, sometimes. I can remember helping them to make jam in a hot, dark little summer kitchen lit by a single naked bulb, cooking on an old wood-fired stove, sealing jars with beeswax from my grandfather’s beehives, and all the while they’re planning a Planned Parenthood fundraiser or talking about raising hell at the next schoolboard meeting to stop book banning efforts.
So, sorry for the digression, but it brings me to the question about Trump. How I would love to have my grt grandmother still here today. She’d round up a passle of fired up nonagenarians and be blocking entries at Trump rallies, saying something like, “I won’t raise a hand against you, but if you want to be a part of this ignorant hate, you have to go through me to do it. I think you’re better than that, aren’t you?”, and damn the consequences.
I still miss that woman every single day.

@schrodingers_cat:
While it’s perhaps harder to see, the same outpouring of ordinary people helping others is going on in Texas and Louisiana right now. Businesses and churches are providing shelter, I heard a guy who went to his restaurant to get some food, and has been serving people meals 18 hours a day ever since. Refugees with nothing get a hot meal. He will run out of supplies eventually, but intends to serve out everything he has on hand if resupply doesn’t happen.
And a furniture store chain owner is letting people come into his stores and sleep on the furniture. I am sure that there are many other heartwarming stories of people helping people.
We will continue to support the Salvation Army. Mrs J covered many floods and industrial disasters as a reporter, and has a high regard for the work the SA does in those terrible circumstances. We will also be hitting up the food banks both locally and in Texas as they do great work with very little income.
