Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

No one could have predicted…

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

This post is in: Open Threads, Green Balloons

Commenter Kathleen has begun to arrange a Ballon Juice meet up in Mason, Ohio and asked if I’d put an announcement on the front page. So here are the details:

Date: Saturday, September 9
Time: 4:00 PM
Place: Wood Fire Grill in Mason, Ohio (Wood Fire is about 33 mile/40 minute drive from Dayton Convention Center).
https://mason.firebirdsrestaurants.com/
Ms. Alt Fax, Esq and Ukulele Virtuoso Glaukopis from Dayton have already RSVP’d.
Attendees should please RSVP in the comments* by Friday, September 8 so I can make reservations. Ms. Fax will be bringing the balloons.
I look forward to meeting The Jackal Party!
So if you’re interested in attending, please let her know in the comments.
* This was originally an email address, but in this day and age, for operational security reasons, I’m not putting those on the front page or anywhere else. Just use the comments to RSVP.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Actually, my dad and I created the name when I was visiting him in the hospital. He “was livin’ on the air in Cincinnati” as morning man on WLW AM in the 60’s/70’s early 80’s and crafted his own comedy routines and serials. I had been noodling ideas about a mythical radio station with an Edith Prickly type manager and we were discussing characters and concepts. That’s how Dr. Spittle was created!

I should note that it’s not a totally heinous drive from Columbus, and while it’s a haul from the People’s Kenyan Islamic Soshalist Republic of Louisville, I’d welcome anyone who’d make the drive. Hint.

Cannonfire (Joseph Cannon) has an interesting post regarding Trump’s deliberate sabotage of the voting process. He links to 2 articles, the first about Tillerson’s plan to close State Department office responsible for promoting US cyber security abroad and the resignations from the National Infrastructure Advisory Council:

Trump has deliberately undermined this nation’s cybersecurity, thereby making it easier for a foreign actor to hack our election system. Any congressperson who hopes to to keep his job will be made to understand that only those with Trump’s seal of approval will win the vote.

See this story in The Hill:
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has outlined a reorganization plan that would involve closing the State Department office charged with promoting U.S. cybersecurity interests abroad, according to a letter obtained Tuesday.

In a letter to Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Tillerson confirmed his proposal to eliminate the position of cybersecurity coordinator and fold the functions of the cyber office into a bureau in charge of business and economic affairs.
    Now go here:
A quarter of the members of the National Infrastructure Advisory Council, whose purview includes national cybersecurity, have resigned. In a group resignation letter, they cited both specific shortfalls in the administration’s approach to cybersecurity, and broader concerns that Trump and his administration have undermined the “moral infrastructure” of the U.S.

The resignations came Monday and were acknowledged by the White House on Tuesday.
But the resigning advisors also said the Administration was not “adequately attentive to the pressing national security matters within the NIAC’s purview, or responsive to sound advice received from experts and advisors.” The letter also zeroed in on “insufficient attention to the growing threats to the cybersecurity of the critical systems upon which all Americans depend,” including election systems.
The actual resignation letter is here.

Here is a link to his entire post including the links cited above:

I would like to meet up except that I grew up in Northern Kentucky and now live in Arizona. Nobody who lives there refers to the area as Northeast Kentucky. I went to Mason occasionally growing because my parents had friends there. I do remember it before Kings Island came.
