Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

In my day, never was longer.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

The words do not have to be perfect.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Second rate reporter says what?

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

…When you say sh*t like this:

“As he puts on plastic gloves to serve food at NRG Stadium…President Trump turns to press and says: “My hands are too big!”

Dude.  Special pleading like this only makes it harder to ignore the obvious inference. Seriously, Donald. Can we talk? I don’t care about your sense of adequacy, or its absence. Just let it lie, you know. This whole subject.

In other quotes from the nation’s Disaster Tourist in Chief, we find this gem:

Leaving the shelter, Trump told the survivors and gathered reporters to “have a good time.”

Ummm.

I’m sure everyone there felt the love.

Lastly, here’s the sober sitrep from a guy who, we were told by The New York Times, is all over the long-term impact of water on structures:

When asked about the devastating flooding still covering much of the region, he replied: “The flooding? Oh, yeah, yeah, there’s a lot of water, but it’s leaving pretty quickly. But there’s a lot of water, a lot of water, but it’s moving out.”

I’m not even going to get into Melania’s Stiletto-gate, Take Two (AKA Spikes of Compassion). Who cares? She has her job to do, which seems mostly to involve distracting the Ferret-Heedit Cheeto-Faced Shit-gibbon as he obsesses on hand size.

I’m thinking that all those stories about how Harvey would give Trump the platform he needed to become, at last, a president, are aging well. Don’t you?

Trump’s visit is being hailed on cable news as a display of grandfatherly love that will endear him to the nation. They don’t care about words, they just want reassuring pictures. A month from now, when Houston’s population is still struggling with disaster, cable news will have forgotten it happened. Trump is the perfect President for that medium, since his attention span is even shorter. BTW, why is it considered presidential for the Chief Executive to arrive on the scene at a disaster for a photo-op and generally get in the way of those actually working to help. That’s not Trump’s fault, if any President doesn’t do it, they get ripped. There were big hurricanes when I was a kid, but I don’t remember Ike of JFK showing up at any shelters nor any public outcry when they didn’t.

The writers were half-right – Harvey could have been such a platform. What they missed (and at this point they have no one to blame but themselves) was that given a platform, Trump’s instinct is to jump up and down on it screaming “Look at me! Look at me!”

I assume that’s in response to CNN’s reporters actually saving people.

TRMS did a segment on this. IIRC it was LBJ who started the tradition, making what was more or less a surprise appearance at a shelter after a hurricane. Some people who couldn’t see what the cause of all the commotion was started yelling, “What’s going on?” and LBJ shouted back: “This is your president and I’m here to help you”.
It’s the pantomime of loading trucks and passing out supplies that bothers me, even if it was Obama doing it. But I’m a phlegmatic sort and maybe the people there do get some kind of boost from it.

    O/T Nice work, Alabama cops.

The Alabama Supreme Court on Friday temporarily paused the murder trial of a white police officer accused of killing a black man as it considers a defense request to remove the judge because of a social media post in which the judge complained about being racially profiled by police.

Justices issues a temporary stay on all proceedings in the case, which is scheduled to go to trial in October, as it considers the matter. Justices asked for briefs to be filed quickly.

The defense is seeking the recusal of Montgomery County Circuit Judge Greg Griffin because of a past Facebook post in which Griffin complained about being stopped by police because he is black. The defense appealed after Griffin declined to step aside following a contentious hearing.

In a Facebook post before he was assigned the case, the judge wrote that he had been stopped during his morning walk by officers who claimed he matched the description of someone who had been reported in the area with a crowbar. Griffin wrote that he showed them his judicial badge.

The post, which did not mention Gunn’s death, said in part: “It was aggravating to be detained when the only thing I was guilty of was being a black man walking down the street in his neighborhood with a stick in his hand.”

Defense attorney Roianne Conner argued in a May hearing that she wasn’t claiming that Griffin was biased, only that judicial ethics rules require judges to avoid even “appearances of impropriety.”

The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals declined to force Griffin’s recusal.

@JMG: I think what happened is this: Shrub got rightly trashed for the horrible job his utterly unqualified appointees did for Katrina, and not showing much interest (including the fiddling-while-Rome-burned McCain birthday celebration.)

So when Obama was in charge, the right wing had to trash him for everything Bush had gotten trashed for (vacations, golf, etc.) even if it was a complete lie. Obama made FEMA competent, so they flushed that part of Bush criticism and pretended there was only made-up partisan crap about empathy, and attacked him for staying away from disaster zones until it was appropriate.

So now that it’s a Republican, he has to go blunder in even while it’s a bad idea, to continue to support the false narrative, and feed the new false narrative that he’s somehow showing he cares. (And hide the reality that they’re all against government action that could help, except for mouthing platitudes in the immediate aftermath.)

It’s stunning how total the administration’s victory on Charlottesville has been.

The administration didn’t win the fight over Charlottesville. Boston did. The Nazis turned tail and ran as soon as they saw how overwhelming their opposition actually is, and all they have left is sitting on the sidelines sputtering, But but but antifa!

@satby: This is precisely what is wrong with Melania’s stilettos:

And other than Melania making it obvious that it’s all photo op stagecraft, no one would give a shit what she wears on her feet.

This article expands on that, and I’ll expand further.

The messages that this administration sends about women is that they are ornaments to men of power. Photos of the cabinet are of old white men with a few token women and people of color dropped in. The Trump women have made themselves into a particular kind of stereotypical object: arm candy. All the talk in the world about Ivanka’s liberalism and good intentions don’t change that. We can recall Trump’s campaign comment that he’d like to have her for his own, um, arm candy.

I will restrain myself on the subject of women being forced to wear those abominations. It’s pretty close to foot-binding.

So after the pain of doing that, yes, high heels are more tolerable. Given the way they mash toes together, it’s hard to say comfortable.
