#NewYork 10 #sharks seized from basement pool https://t.co/9TPA7v42M9 pic.twitter.com/eo5rVlFwp0

— Dayton Daily News (@daytondailynews) September 7, 2017

NBC New York has the details:

Seven live sharks and three dead ones have been seized from a pool in the basement of a home in the Hudson Valley.

Officers searching a home in the Dutchess County hamlet of LaGrangeville last month found a 15-foot-diameter aboveground basement pool with seven live sandbar sharks, two dead leopard sharks and one dead hammerhead shark, officials said Wednesday.

All the sharks were 2 feet to 4 feet long, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Marine wildlife experts took blood samples and measured and tagged the sharks before transferring them to the Long Island Aquarium in a truck equipped with water tanks, oxygen and climate control.

No one has been charged. An investigation is continuing.

For anyone wondering, Irma has moved due west, rather than west, northwest. Approximately 1/2 the eye is over Cuba at this point. If it continues west, rather than turning northwest, it’ll continue over Cuba, which will bear the brunt of the storm. I’m not sure anyone has any good idea what this thing is going to do.

Also, Port Tampa is now closed. Approximately 40% of all gasoline comes into Florida through Port Tampa. It’ll will remain shut until the threat from Irma has passed. I topped up my Lexus hybrid about 2 hours ago – took all of 1.081 gallons (I’d driven 50 miles since I’d filled up on Tuesday night) – and the Thortons tanker had just pulled in to refill.

If my mom’s power near Ft. Half the time, I live in my family’s lakeside house in western Maine. Nearest neighbor is a good 3 or 4 minute walk along a dirt road {next nearest is across the lake}. It’s wonderful ~ this introvert is more than happy to retreat to her little piece of woods.
The rest of the time, I’m in an apartment near work in a small city on Maine’s coast ~ and it’s so strange to be able to hear other people when I am sitting in my living room and have the windows open {although it’s a quiet neighborhood overall}. But I can [almost] see the ocean from the window and I can walk to work, so I tolerate the proximity of other people.

@CaseyL: Right now the track has shifted again to account for the fact that Irma didn’t just go west in the past couple of hours, but southwest. The eye is now partially on shore in Cuba. Right now, amazingly, Miami, Broward, and Palm Beach counties are out of the cone and free and clear – as of right now.

So now comes the questions as to what does this thing do? Does it keep plowing southwest over Cuba? Does it come back to due west? Does it finally begin to turn northwest? Or north? Or northeast? These are the questions right now. I’ve been watching the local meteorologist on the 24/7 news station, Bay News 9, and he’s been very good about saying that even with the National Hurricane Center guidance, from looking at the actual movement, he’s really not sure where this thing is going to go. We’ll know more in the morning.

    Fwiw, from Wapo.

This story will be updated throughout Friday. It was last updated to incorporate the 11 p.m. National Hurricane Center advisory as well as new model information, suggesting Florida’s west coast is most at risk.

Computer model information late Friday afternoon and evening suggested a track up Florida’s west coast was becoming most likely, though shifts were possible. The Florida Keys, Naples, Fort Myers, and Tampa, could all be severely impacted although the Hurricane Center said “it is extremely difficult to pinpoint exactly where the center might move onshore.”

Irrespective of the storm’s exact track, hurricane-force winds could blast most if not all of the Florida peninsula.

“Irma is likely to make landfall in Florida as a dangerous major hurricane, and will bring life-threatening wind impacts to much of the state regardless of the exact track of the center,” the National Hurricane Center said.

The Hurricane Center had hoisted hurricane warnings for much of South and Central Florida on both coasts. Hurricane watches extended somewhat further north on both sides of the peninsula.

A storm-surge warning was also issued for much of the South and Central Florida coastline because of the potential for water to rise up to 6 to 12 feet above normally dry land at the coast. The Hurricane Center said this would bring the risk of “dangerous” and “life-threatening” inundation and that the threat was highest along Florida’s southwest coast.

He walked in the room, took one look at my forehead, and stopped dead. The first thing he said was, “Wow, that looks like it really hurts!”

Somehow I tend to end up with doctors who have no tact. The orthopedist who repaired my knee pointed to the MRI and said, “You see that little ball of goo there? That used to be your ACL.”

What are they looking to find in blood samples?

Late to the party, but a trained marine biologist can find all sorts of useful health information from a blood sample. If the sharks are going to another home, presumably at a sanctioned aquarium, first it has to be established that they’re not going to spread infection to their new tank-mates.

Also, too lazy to google right now, but regulatory agencies are doing amazing DNA-identification work on various fish species these days; quite possibly a blood sample will tell them where those sharks came from / which malign idiot might’ve sold them to the homeowner in the first place.
