Colbert, per NYMag:
…— “And we all know the Emmys mean a lot to Donald Trump. Because he was nominated multiple times for Celebrity Apprentice but he never won. Why didn’t you give him an Emmy? I tell you this. If he had won an Emmy, I bet he wouldn’t have run for president. So in a way this is all your fault.”
— “I thought you people loved morally compromised antiheroes. You like Walter White. He’s just Walter Much Whiter.”…

I’m a bad liberal. I thought Spicer’s Emmy cameo of Spicer appearing as McCarthy appearing as Spicer was cute. Over at GOS I’ve just been told I am bad, very bad to have found any humor in it at all.
I can live with that.
schrodingers_cat
Didn’t see the Emmys, although rehabilitation of Spicer is gross.
Betty Cracker
I can see why Colbert thought it was edgy: the implicit message is this administration is a joke and that big, fat, obvious lies are its daily output.
On the other hand, I agree that Spicer shouldn’t be rehabbed in any way. He knowingly flacked for an unfit, corrupt, compromised demagogue. I guess it depends on whom we were laughing at last night.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Gorky may not get Lawrence O’Donnell’s slot, but I fully expect Kellyanne Conway to morph into the next Peggy Noonan, benefiting from a bidding war between whatever networks have cash
(I have MSNBC on in the background because my internet radio is out, again, and I just heard Stephanie Ruehle say she was at a No Labels* event last night, because of course she was, and the crowd there are all excited for post-pivot, General Kelly controlled trump.
*Republicans who don’t want to talk about abortion or gay rights, plus Lieberman and Bayh.
Cathie from Canada
So Sean Spicer parodies his own “greatest audience ever. Period.” line at the Emmys. So what is he indicating here, that he knew all along it was just another lie but he said it to the White House press corps and to the nation anyway? I guess Professional Lying is now a performance art.
Droppy
I know it’s easy to call everyone else a sellout and maybe we should cut the Emmy folks some slack for having Spicer on, but, geez, there is a huge lack of self-awareness from this industry that gives itself constant pats on the back for having the right opinions about social justice while raking in money from the infotainment industrial complex without any qualms. Really rich people with tons of money are the problem – they are not ever going to be the cure.
Montanareddog
@kindness: I believe I have a fairly open sense of humour but Spicer’s appearance was beyond the pale for me, because it is another step in the normalization of what should be unacceptable behaviour. YMMV, so I will not call you out like apparently happened on GOS, but for me, smug insidery-jokes on this topic by hyper-privileged media elites are unconscionable
Jim, Foolish Literalist
It was, it was a total call out of trump and Spicer, the fragile ego and lies necessary to sooth it, but the edge is too subtle for most people, so it’s lost in all the ha ha look! Spicy can laugh at himself.

My take as well–guy paid to tell obvious lies repeats obvious lies as refresher to us all that it really happened, and continues under the somehow more repellent Possum Queen. Whatever happens to Spicer in the future I simply don’t care, it’s what happens to his former boss now that I care about.
LongHairedWeirdo
That Michael Calderone tweet is interesting because it suggests another explanation for Trump’s success. Do producers know what people want better than polls? Or do producers drive polls?
A person who knows what drives producers can use them to drive polls, albeit indirectly. And the Republicans have long had skill at organizing to drive a news cycle, sure that as long as they win enough cycles, they’ll win elections.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Spicer was willing to lie and bully in the service of the Gross Liar and Bully, but he wasn’t very good at it, and knew he wasn’t very good at it. Jethrene isn’t just willing, she enjoys being a lying bully. Not to excuse her by any means, I agree she’s repellent, but that must’ve been one fucked-up house to grow up in.

Jemele Hill still has people clamoring for her job after Huckleberry Angrybrow violates both the spirit AND the letter of the First Amendment, Kaepernick still can’t land a job when you have NFL QBs literally playing at an NAIA Intramural level, but let’s look at Spicey poking fun at himself fronting for a White Supremacist *President.
FOH with that bullshit.
sherparick
@kindness: It was funny. However, morally and ethically it was terrible. Something can be both. First, Spicer got a big, fat, check for this routine. Second, like Corey Lewandowski, he will be off to a semi-permanent set of gigs on cable news and the right wing lecture circuit pushing Trumpism (despite Trump’s frequent humiliations of him). Its a reminder, of what another comedian, the late great George Carlin said, “There’s a Club, and you and I (and apparently Hillary) are not in it.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXhZyAOuyhE

Ugh. Just imagine, after Trump is done (one way or another) all the tell-all books that will come out, written by all of these horrible people, who will be forgiven and brought onto the teevee to talk about how awful they knew he was, but really, what could they have been expected to do? I feel like liberals internalized all of Jesus’ teachings about forgiveness, totally forgetting that he also he went into the moneychangers’ space and broke shit.

Didn’t watch the Emmy’s but can’t say I’m surprised that someone thought it was a good idea to bring on Sean Spicer. Maybe they think societal shunning is meant for the likes of Colin Kaepernick but is just not appropriate for a sociopath-enabler like Spicer. I mean he needs to be rehabbed right and who better to help him than the Emmy’s?
By the way, does anyone else love ‘Grace and Frankie’? I binge-watched season 3 and can’t wait for season 4 even though I hear Lisa Kudrow is joining the cast and I’m not particularly fond of her. Love, love, love Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

@geg6: That was my take also. At that time I was wondering what they say to Spicer to get him to agree to be laughed AT like that. To be the brunt of the joke. To be completely called out and shown as a liar. I was surprised anyone would agree to do it. I did not interpret this as “normalizing” or “laughing with” — I’m surprised by the reactions to this, I thought Spicer was opened to complete ridicule.

‘Put the Panic Back in Hispanic’: Photo at Robertsdale pep rally sparks criticism
Posted on September 16, 2017 at 3:33 PM
By John Sharp [email protected]
For the second time in recent months, the Baldwin County School System finds itself investigating a politically-charged incident at one of its schools.
The latest involves a picture, shared on social media Saturday, of two Robertsdale high school students standing and smiling with the school’s mascot. One of the girls is holding a President Donald Trump political sign, that reads “Making America Great Again.” The other is holding a homemade sign that reads, “Put the Panic Back in Hispanic.”
“We are aware of a photo that appears to be taken at a Robertsdale High School football pep rally Friday, Sept. 15, that is circulating on social media containing political banners and unacceptable language,” Baldwin County Superintendent Eddie Tyler said in a statement. “School administrators, as well as my office, are following up on the matter.”
The photo stoked criticism on Facebook and Twitter. One current student said she is “sad” to be a member of the senior class, and others demanded the school system and Robertsdale high school officials be held accountable.
Krystal Austin Moore, who identifies herself as a former class president, shared the photo on Facebook and claimed she was “confused” as to why the banners were acceptable at a public high school.

And Kaepernick could help out my Jets immediately, but apparently they’re trying to win the Sam Darnold sweepstakes. So instead of signing That Angry Black Guy Who Hates America More Than Hitlary, they’re going to hope that they can roll the dice before and during the 2018 Draft, in the hope that THIS TIME, FINALLY, they’ll have figured out how to draft a QB that is at least AVERAGE. Because they’ve been so outstanding at it since 1966, with the possible exception of The Sanchise.
Of course, Darnold’s white, so they won’t have to worry about other owners “suggesting” he not be signed.

OT – so I’m having a discussion with my RWNJ mom today about radical youngest daughter, and how the kid is back to dating the pathetically weak milksop that none of us think much of. I had just delivered a statement to the effect that daughter keeps him around because he can be ordered about while doing nothing to push back.
RWNJ mom then makes this statement:
I nearly choked on my spit.
My response went like this:

@kindness: Many years ago I ran across a thread that was a parody of liberal outrage overreach. It wound up on the wrong side of Poe’s Law. But there was one comment in response that stuck with me all these years as hitting the nail square on: “The best progressive is a humorless progressive.”
The more I hang around Left-Blogistan, the more I realize that some stereotypes of liberals actually are true. And it depresses the hell out of me.
No Drought No More
Lest We Ever Forget: Even as he sabotaged the Paris Peace negotiations with his treason in 1968, Richard Nixon appeared on Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In (a top rated TV show that year), in which he uttered a popular catchphrase of the show by asking, “Sock it to me”?
John Wayne also appeared on a Laugh In show dressed as a giant, pink Easter bunny. Now that was entertainment..
Nicole
@rikyrah: It gets worse- check out the reason for the first complaint:
“The complaint from Julia Coccaro, a high school senior and chairwoman of the Alabama High School Democrats, stemmed in part from a controversy in June over a summer reading list produced by AP Government teacher Gene Ponder filled with works by various conservative political heroes and right-wing firebrands. Among the authors were Mark Levin, Michael Savage and Ann Coulter.”
Oh my effing Jeebus on a saltine- THAT’s considered an ADVANCED PLACEMENT READING LIST? Let alone the abhorrent viewpoints, the caliber of writing by those “authors” is embarrassing. Whatever the residents are paying in taxes to fund that school, they’re getting ripped off. That Gene Ponder is clearly dumb as a bucket of hair. No wonder the school churns out a couple of racist students who don’t comprehend that the Internet is forever.

@Lurking Canadian: All already dead? How very convenient.
In my tinfoil hat moments, I’m convinced that when Hillary and Trump have both passed on, it will come out that the vote was, indeed, sabotaged by the Russians in several states, and in fact, she should have won the Electoral College, but there was so much fear about what admitting that the electoral system was compromised, and what that would do to the nation after the opponent had already been inaugurated, that everyone figured it was best to just keep quiet. Like how schools do everything they can to hide sexual abuse scandals, rather than deal with the fallout. It’s all about protecting the system from itself.
