What’s going to happen in Alabama tonight? I went through a stage of feeling bad that I usually rooted for the craziest Republican to win in every primary but after the very reasonable Graham and Cassidy plotted to kill thousands of Americans, I decided fuck it, we’re better off with the openly crazy than with the very serious Bobo-fellating types.

I’m rooting for you in the general.

I’m rooting for injuries.

interesting thread:
Corner Stone
Strange would continue voting for everything McConnell said to. Moore may actually Freedumb Caucus Turtle’s ass and not vote for shit anybody puts forward. The Senate does not have enough total nutjobs to make any kind of coalition in the R party. And since none of the R Senators would ever vote for a D initiative, if we can’t get the D person over the line in AL then I say Moore is the less strange way to go.
dexwood
Are we a crazy go nuts country, or what? Uncharted waters. There be monsters.
Corner Stone
@germy: Tom Nichols is another asshole who is not an ally and can not be trusted on basically anything.

Let enough of these guys go to the Senate that they work a secession via the legislative process. The capital can be in Texas or Alabama and they can build the biggest wall imaginable so their subjects (not citizens) can’t escape to the US for free health care.

@David ?Canadian Anchor Baby? Koch: The most tremendous pivot. Very classy. People talk about how great my pivots are.

With 16 % of precincts reporting:
Moore (R) 43,349 58.2
Strange (R) 31,079 41.8
Buy popcorn now!
It is infuriating that this paltry number of people get the same number of Senators every other state does.
PhoenixRising
…because the Senate is a deliberative body, introducing a nutcase like Moore instead of a toady like Strange will be better for the republic.
This theory in the GOP primary last year turned out…badly.
M. Bouffant
Used to be in a party clique w/ the late Ms. True in the late ’80s & early ’90s. Just knew her as kinda crazy Andrea, had no idea until later she was the singer of the song (let alone an ex-porn star).

@germy: That’s great!

Greatest pivot in the history of pivots. Believe me…

The chances of the D winning in Alabama are miniscule. In a way that’s comforting. Whoever wins will be terrible, so I no longer have to think about them.
Villago Delenda Est
@Doug!: Agreed. It’s a good analysis of what makes scum like Stone tick. Nichols of course is a climate denier and a GOP as the white supremacist party denier, but his take on the DC elite types who lurve Donald is reasonable.
David ?Canadian Anchor Baby? Koch
Moore’s victory proves it’s about #EconomicAnxiety
sdhays
@Corner Stone: This is a good point. Another Ted Cruz does the Republican Majority no favors.
NobodywatchesNascr
If Moore pulls it out — sorry for the image — does anybody think the Democrat has a chance in the general?
marv
@dexwood: damn fine post, dexwood
Baud
@Mary G: Alabama is the 24st most populous state. This is the GOP primary. Turnout will be low.

Oh my, Doug’s gone disco on us. Sad!
schrodingers_cat
I just saw Moore’s photo with the cowboy hat and the tiny gun. He is a buffoon.
A Ghost to Most
I wonder if/when projected Sen. Moore tries to install the 10 commandments monument in the Capitol rotunda?
He is one monumental asshole, after all.
Eta Isn’t Alabama the home of two wetsuits and a folding? I hope folks keep digging on him.
chris
@Baud: Saw an estimate earlier of 12%.

Shelby won reelection last year 65% to 35%.

Cities are supporting Strange and everywhere else is going for Moore, but even though cities report later it looks like Moore’s night.
ETA: Moore is now leading in Mobile and Montgomery. Hard to see how he loses.

Senator Graham is a pathetic shit but he was primaried by 10-12 deranged assholes who thought he wasn’t enough of a True Conservative.

@Dorothy A. Winsor (formerly Iowa Old Lady): The conservative talk radio people here in Alabama think Democrat Doug Jones will beat Roy Moore. They’re already giving up on Moore.
Baud
@Alabama Blue Dot: That would make it a very Merry Christmas.
randy khan
It’s a great day for Mitch McConnell, all around, isn’t it?
? Martin
AP just called it for Moore. Hard to imagine a more proper lunatic winning a party nomination for Senate.
Barbara
NYT called it for Moore. With 45% reporting he leads 57/43. Wow.
mdblanche
@Alabama Blue Dot: Really?!
Corner Stone
@Doug!: He denies racial motivation for voting outcomes and also has stated gerrymandering/voter suppression is not an issue. I could not give one fucking fuck less what that fucking fuck has to say about any fucking thing.
Raoul
@Corner Stone: Yeah, I tried following Nichols on Twitte because he sometimes has interesting opinions on matters of never-Trumping. But he is a total dick after 6pm, when he thinks he can take on trolls and win (and he may have had a scotch so his judgement is even more self-regarding and his tweets are abrasive in unfunny ways). Really tedious and I’ve muted him.

@Alabama Blue Dot: Now that would be excellent.
planetpundit
Nutjobs like Moore will force Repub incumbents to retire to avoid a right flank attack during the Primary. Plus makes the minuscule potential for Repubs governing vanish if any of these get in the Senate or become a Governor.
As to the Fate of the Republic; until the Democratic Party can resume the challenging tasks of walking and chewing gum in parallel, the outlook is dire. FYI I am a lifelong, strong Democrat who gladly voted for Secretary Clinton, Al (Too Fat) Gore and my long time next door neighbor V.P. Mondale. And my former college professor Paul Wellstone.
Dems do not have a candidate problem; they have leadership, organizational and policy priority issues.

@dexwood: @dexwood: Well, thank you, dexwood, and just for fun I’ll give you this little essentially meaningless nugget from the old days. In ’79 Pete Rose came over to the Phillies – it was a really big story, the early days of free agency. So I’m there in spring training, the coverage is ridiculous, and one morning before a spring-training game in St. Pete, Annie Leibovitz shows up strolling around in front of the dugout. I recognize her from Rolling Stone, believe it or not, and I say, How are you doing? For some reason or another I mentioned I really liked Dave Marsh. She said yeah he’s a great guy, can I get a team picture? This was like the most comical thing a famous person ever said to me. The idea that a major league baseball team would get all organized for a team picture before a spring training game – no disrespect to Ms. Leibovitz – but just for anyone they didn’t know. And the only reason I go into this is because I don’t watch TV or ball games any more and apparently the players now line up on the baselines for the anthem. That’s some serious bullshit.

@Baud: Shelby was running against a nobody, and despite being evil incarnate, still has a bland reputation in Alabama. Jones may not beat Moore, but he is polling even right now and will at least keep it within 10 points.

@different-church-lady:
I’ve been getting emails from Moore for some hard-to-fathom reason. He’s running against McConnell and talks about how Trump needs someone like him in Washington. So far he hasn’t said much about Trump endorsing his opponent.
