Well, after two whole days of crisp fall weather, we’re back in the grip of a tropical system. But it’s baseball time anyway.

    October 1964

“October 1964 should be a hit with old-time baseball fans, who’ll relish the opportunity to relive that year’s to-die-for World Series, when the dynastic but aging New York Yankees squared off against the upstart St. Louis Cardinals. It should be a hit with younger students of the game, who’ll eat up the vivid portrayals of legends like Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris of the Yankees and Bob Gibson and Lou Brock of the Cardinals. Most of all, however, David Halberstam’s new book should be a hit with anyone interested in understanding the important interplay between sports and society.”

It’s been a disappointing day in sports so far. Penn State blowing a lead to Ohio State. Minnesota losing 3-2 to Wisconsin on three horrendous defensive zone blunders. The Gopher football team playing someone better than awful.

At least Iowa State beat their second Top 5 undefeated team this month, behind a quarterback who lost the starting job at Hutchinson Community College a couple of years ago.

Open Thread! So I can bitch.
Grocery delivery is available in my area for six bucks – yay! So I indulge. Today the delivery guy took his heavily laden panel truck off my driveway onto my lawn to turn around. Bad idea, as we’ve recently had rain. Truck is axle deep in mud.
Not to be deterred – he spun the wheels enough to dig a six-inch deep furrow ten feet long. Sprayed mud and sod and grass everywhere.
Then he helped himself to my seasoned oak firewood to try and get out. Nope.
    My brick stash. Nope.
    My slate stone stash. Nope.
Mind you, this is all without saying a word to me.
When the tow truck finally came to get him out, he left the furrows, the brick, the slate, and the firewood, buried in eight inches of mud.
At first I felt bad for him, stuck because my lawn is soft and treacherous. Then he left that disaster behind and God help me I hope he gets fired.

    October 28, 2017 at 9:42 pm

    @debbie:

. Why do some Major League baseball players wear their pants so high above their socks?

    A. Because whether they mean to or not, a few players are preserving a proud, 150-year tradition, a tradition that many lament is dying as baseball fashion has come full circle in the past three decades. Yes, just as some investors historically have studied women’s hemlines to predict how the stock market will fare, baseball purists have kept a close eye on a recent hosiery trend that they say is totally lacking in socks appeal.

Ironically, the pairing of short pants and high socks likely caused as much of a stir when the they were first worn as they apparently do now for people like you. Baseball historians say that when the sport began in earnest in the 1830s and ’40s, all players wore long pants just as most have gone back to now since the 1990s. After all, it was only natural to want to protect your legs if you were sliding into home plate or flinging yourself at a hot grounder rocketing up the middle.

    Gin & Tonic

    October 28, 2017 at 9:42 pm

Today was beautiful here ahead of the coming storm, so I got my bicycle out and went for a ride. First time since last fall, because of the slight unpleasantness toward the end of ski season. My physical therapist didn’t forbid it, when I saw her on Tuesday, and my surgeon had said back in September that if my strength was improving, I could give it a try around this time.

Only did 10 or so miles, because I didn’t know how the arm would feel and didn’t want to get stuck too far from home. But it felt fine, and now hours later, sitting here with a cold one it’s still fine. Cardio-wise, I was about where you’d expect given a year off, but the rest of it was automatic. “Like riding a bike.”

I was standing at the railing and a man came and stood beside me . It was Bob Gibson. I said hi. He said hi.
I had read his book, “From Ghetto to Glory,” and knew he was a private person, so I said nothing else. We stood their together, looking at the river, like friends would do. Eventually, he walked away. I’m glad I didn’t say anything but hi, or somehow pester him away. In my mind, I made friends with Bob Gibson.
