In a day and age where few things shock me, this one did:
Last month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central West Virginia was extremely fortunate to receive a year-long $20,000 grant to increase staff knowledge of #LGBTQ issues through training and provide assistance with developing local partnerships to best serve LGBTQ youth.
Soon after accepting the LGBTQ grant, however, a representative of three foundations halted funding to the organization and has not fulfilled a financial pledge made late last year.
Sadly, the amount was so great it may force us to suspend some services and programs.
Big Brothers Big Sisters believes inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. We stand true to our mission to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
This includes all children.
One in three kids don’t have the support of a caring role model. Studies show LGBTQ youth are less likely than their non-LGBTQ peers to have supportive adults in their lives. Every day we see the positive impact mentoring can have, and for LGBTQ youth, this can be especially important since they are at greater risk of attempting suicide and being victim to hate crimes and bullying.
Suspending services, even temporarily, would have a negative impact on the children currently in our program. Many would feel let down yet again. Another disappointment in a series of disappointments. Rejected again.If we are to once and for all change the long-term narrative for WV kids and the Mountain State, it is time we recognized the value of ALL of our children. It is time we invest in their future, which in turn defines the future for our state. I don’t want to look back in 10 years to see talent left undiscovered.
I called and had a very nice chat with Sara McDowell, the executive director of the organization, and this has put a real gap in there budget (close to $100k). And since these are funds that were promised last year and then reneged upon, it makes their problem even worse.
It’s worth noting that these are children who are also being hit by the double whammy of the opioid crisis we talked earlier, and in some cases adults are trafficking the children for sex to feed their addiction. It’s just a horrible mess.
At any rate, I was hoping you all would help make their donations pages go viral. There is a GoFundMe that you can find here , and there is a donations page on their actual website. Either works.

I was a big sister back in CA in the early 80’s drugs were a problem then for many and it was worse for those who weren’t straight, many were afraid to admit that they liked the same sex since it would get them thrown out of house. I have heard from those still in area that 35 years later parents are still discarding their own children if they don’t to conform to ideals.
I suspect that since that time things have only gotten worse; I know that back as far as “civilization” goes parents have been selling their own children to feed their own needs.

I hate to be a cynic but kids don’t get money the way animals do. I read somewhere yesterday that someone estimates that Americans will spend $400 million on pet costumes this Halloween, so there’s certainly disposable income available, but priorities are weird. I used to do a newsletter for a private foster care agency, and it’s frustrating, because you hear all these heartbreaking stories and see all these great photos, but you can’t use any of it due to privacy needs of the kids.
OT: There is a great long read on John Boehner in Politico Magazine today. He’s a gutless asshole, but an interesting one and said a lot of things his wife didn’t want him to say, about Republicans and right wing media. Left wing social media, also too, of course.
I’m afraid he’s right and it’s scary.

I kicked in yesterday (on the BB/BS site), and headed over to the Go Fund Me site to see that they’ve raised about $7k of a hoped-for $50k in 9 days so far. I would imaging it would take a while for a smaller organization like a local BB/BS to come up with a total. Could you let us know how it turns out, JGC?

this is unconscionable. The article didn’t out the donors who stiffed them, and I get why. If it’s individuals there isn’t much to be done, but if they are foundations….not cool. If you really want your donation to count, get online, on twitter, on FB and start making noise about outing the bastards who did this. This should never be allowed from a legit foundation. Stiffing a whole organization because some board or staff member is an insufferable god botherer is BS. They should have to wear the shame in public. And other nonprofits who are considering asking them for money should be warned. Also could be that the donors to those foundations don’t know what they are up to, just like when the CEO of Komen decided Planned Parenthood shouldn’t get their money. Creeps.
Japa21
@SiubhanDuinne: Have friends close to there and they love it. Based on our visits to see them it seems quite nice. You can do a trip to Grand Canyon easily. It is somewhat artsy But not like say Taos.

@artem1s: The post read
which I would interpret as one person acting in the name of all three foundations. So, probably a local lawyer or banker or similar who acts as the executor for some family foundations. Most foundations aren’t huge and don’t have dedicated staff. So, it probably is just one bigot, exploiting his/her position.
Steve in the ATL
@SiubhanDuinne: when Arizona applied to become a state, the US said it had to have three things: a capital, a university, and an insane asylum. Prescott got the capital, Tucson the university, and Phoenix the insane asylum, which was later renamed Arizona State University.
Or so my daughter was told at U of A freshman orientation.

@SiubhanDuinne: I remember little enough after a summer stint there in ’81. At the time its most famous feature was “Whiskey Row”, roughly a mile strip of nothing but taverns and liquor stores (and yes, this was a point of civic pride). Climate is high desert, although I was there during the monsoon season (which I was shocked to learn was a thing outside of tropical climes). It sits on the edge of the Prescott National Pine Forest. The political environment was very conservative, and I can only believe it’s gotten worse in the intervening decades.

@SiubhanDuinne: Prescott gets snow. You would be cold for about 4 months of the year. Nice the rest of the time. Prescott is a small town but not tiny. It supports 2 Home Depots and a Lowes. It’s near Sedona which is a rich annoying hippy dippy town. Housing is not cheap in Prescott. You can get nicer affordable mobile homes on their own lots(these are not your stereotypical trailer trash mobiles) but stick homes will run you at least $200k more likely $300k. You could move to more affordable areas in far far north Phoenix and you would probably be an hr away from Prescott. It’s definitely a Rd area. Are your siblings actually in Prescott or just in AZ?

@SiubhanDuinne: @Ruckus: I don’t have any personal knowledge, but according to a cost of living website I have justed looked at, Prescott is more expensive than Atlanta and Santa Fe is cheaper than Pasadena, both due to cost of housing.

I want to make a pitch for Tucson for retirees. It’s not bounced back from the recession. It made some national list for one of top places for distressed properties. You can get major bang for your buck on housing. It has a major university so it’s got amenities. Decent healthcare facilities. The weather is decent. Several degrees cooler than Phoenix. It’s a blue area. Lots of natural beauty.

I know this is an old troupe but I still get maybe 20-30 or more requests from democratic fund raisers every day and I have no idea what the money would go for and am not interest in filling coffers that don’t get us anywhere in the short or long run.
I’m 68, semi retired, looking to retire on less than an ideal amount of money in a couple of years, so I don’t spend unless I have to or there is a very good cause/reason. I’d like to fund all of the Big siblings sites, all of the pet rescue orgs and every great dem running, investigations into the republican crime family, but some things just aren’t going to happen in this life. I’m like a lot of us, old enough to know better but not in any financial condition to do much or anything about it.

@Ruckus: Funny. My wife and I are more affected by cold than heat. We’ve been heading south in February for the last couple of years.
There were a couple of days this summer when they blasted the AC so high in my office that I went out to the parking lot and sat in my car with the windows up for awhile. It felt great, at least until I started to break a sweat. :-)

@Omnes Omnibus:
When I was in jr high, which would have been a decade after they were made, the Village Cinema would show all the Hammer films and it was THE place for sixth graders to meet sixth graders from other schools, upon whom you could put your moves, such as they were, and not have to see them every day in class. So I never really saw one because I was either smooching, or more often than not, trying but failing to smooch.

@Ruckus: For Taos and Santa Fe, elevation is a consideration. If you’re prone to altitude sickness at fairly low elevations, might be worth staying for a longer visit to make sure you acclimate without trouble. And talking with your PCP if you have asthma or anything else that might be influenced by altitude.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mike J: Let me be clear, the ’50s and early ’60s films were great. They just lost it as time went on. The rest, I can’t help….

@Mary G:
My experience of living in other parts of the country is that housing is always the big issue. Everything else is reasonably close in price other than maybe gas in CA. But unless one plans to drive a lot it’s not/shouldn’t be a deal breaker. So the next consideration is weather. When I was looking for a place 6 yrs ago I found a nice house with plenty of room and very nice amenities for $400/month. Of course it was miles from any reasonably sized town, miles south of Ridgecrest CA. There are cheap places to live, there is usually a pretty good reason not to live there.

Heat has always sapped it out of me and as I’ve gotten older it has gotten a bit worse. I can dress for cold, there really is a limit to how much one can undress for heat. And I have plenty of clothes from living in the beautiful midwest. (as he said beautiful with a straight face)

@Ruckus: Don’t they have pressurized cabins in airplanes that are 5000 feet? And oxygen masks deploy at 10000 feet? You are not weird in this. Lots of folks have high altitude problems.
Ruckus
@frosty:
When I did work in the midwest all the girls in the office would run little personal heaters under their desks and turn up the thermostat for the whole floor. It got so bad that the company put one of those locking covers on it and the number of little heaters would trip the circuit breakers. Meanwhile I’d be sitting in my cube in a short sleeve shirt sweating my ass off. I walk around in shorts and t shirt as long as it’s over 65.
Omnes Omnibus
@Ruckus: Okay. You need to make your own choices. Have fun.
Suzanne
@SiubhanDuinne: Quality of life seems pretty high to me up there. The landscape is lovely, and the town is funky and cool. There are a fair number of sober living homes in the area. Arizona is a red state and there are lots of gun people, but there is definitely a significant blue streak up there. Cost of living is probably slightly more than Phoenix on average, but nowhere near insane. There are plenty of properties under $300K. The downtown area and Whiskey Row are lots of fun. They do not have opera or ballet—you’d have to go to Phoenix for that. They do not have a major university or a Level 1 trauma center. It snows.

I recall that the cabin pressure is about 7000 ft but in reality it was a bit of a joke. I once drove what was posted as the highest paved road in the US, to a peak outside of Estes Park, CO and the parking lot was at just over 14,000ft. Got out of the car to walk over to a little store and made about 5 ft before I had to stop to attempt to breathe. I’ve been at 11-12000 ft with no noticeable issues. Wasn’t running a marathon but normal life was OK.
frosty
@Ruckus: I’m bundling up at 65 in the winter. If that’s where the AC is, I’m going out to sit in the sun. Above 80 I get uncomfortable. Metabolism, heat goes up, heat goes down, you can’t explain that.
Ruckus
@Omnes Omnibus:
That’s why we all like different things, we are all different. I don’t really knock the midwest, especially WI or MN. They are/can be beautiful. Even in the winter. Just have had my fill.
frosty
@Ruckus: Good for you! I was in La Paz at 11,500 when I was younger and more fit, I had to stop on the landing to catch my breath going up to the second floor in the apartment. At one point we took an excursion to down Sorata at 8,000 feet and it was a joy to be able to breathe!
And no, coca leaves and coca tea didn’t do anything for my soroche the one day I overdid it. But it makes for a good story.
dimmsdale
@Ruckus: I love both cities too, but the living costs are hellacious, unless you locate way out in the boonies someplace, in which case you need a car and to be able to afford gas. If you’re able to visit SF and spend some time, talk to less well-dressed locals (and NOT tourists obviously!!) and find out how they do it. I have family out there but their folks settled out there in the 40s so they’re “legacy admissions” so to speak. I’d love it if you could find a way to live there, it’s just beautiful.

Doesn’t seem to be as expensive as where I live now, Pasadena or have lived in the not too distant past, north of San Francisco, any where between 15 to 60 miles north of the Golden Gate.
As I said above, housing is the big deal everywhere. I rented a room for a year in southern CA, that wasn’t bad. Of course the area sucked donkey balls but it was pretty cheap. You just have to learn to live with other people. And it wasn’t nearly as bad as living in the navy. But I was younger and more flexible then.

And my buddy, who was built like a linebacker was no better. And I’m at best built like the water boy. We didn’t make it up the hill. My buddies dad drove a dump truck up and down that road every day during the summer to a tungsten mine. We thought if a dump truck could do it….. Of course we forgot about gears and torque. Albuquerque is a great place to retire. We did so in our 30s with a young child, and have been able to live how we liked to in Oakland on 1/5 of the income. Our block is mostly Bay Area and Chicago/NY retirees. You can live well here on a public employee’s retirement pension.

@Ruckus: Altitude sickness is interesting (if you’re not currently suffering symptoms). Being fit and young helps, obviously, but some or maybe a lot of the ability to function at high altitude seems to be hard-wired.
