It’s not always the case that the two best teams in baseball meet in the World Series, but this year, they did. I’ve been pulling for the Astros, but I’m sincerely sorry either team has to lose.

So, fittingly, it all comes down to this. McCullers vs. Darvish to start. Will the Astros win their first series ever? Or will the Dodgers win their first since Ronald Reagan was president?

    Local sports guy predicted before the game that the Dodgers would win last night by 3-1, he predicted a Dodger win tonight 5-2 on the 11pm news last night.

    Just remember if you’re pulling for the Astros, you’re pulling for the Astros with Ted Cruz.

    @Omnes Omnibus: It really annoys me that MLB agree it was despicable and he should be punished, but were unwilling to make him miss his next five games whenever they occurred. If he deserves to sit, he deserves to sit in the World Series.

    I was marginally pro Astro until his racist hijinks and his penalty came down.

    Best thing thus far: the main at bat camera angle doesn’t show the douchebag Marlins Man. Assuming he could get a pair of tickets for 26K like last night.

    Sbnation did a profile on him earlier this year which simply highlighted his doucheyness.

    As a Nats fan (Caps on Grass), I can’t root for the Fucking Yankees of the West Coast. But they are here and we ain’t. Could be worse: the Cards could be here.

    @Mike J: Part of the reason they delayed imposition is because the players’ union would have immediately challenged the suspension. This would have then suspended the suspension as the proposed punishment would then have to work through the grievance process. By the time it was resolved the World Series would be over and the earliest it could be imposed would be the beginning of next season. By doing it this way the players’ union has indicated they will not challenge the punishment as Gurriel has indicated he accepts it and acknowledged, no matter how seemingly insincere an acknowledgement it was, that he was wrong, should not have done it, and is sorry for doing it.

    Ehh. Cleveland was better than Houston this year. And as sad as I was to see Cleveland go down, I am somewhat thankful to Houston for shooting down the hated and hateful Yankees. That, and the fact that some number of Kardashians publicized a picture of them all wearing Dodger outfits is enough for me to mildly pull for them. It is kind of neat that they’re the first team ever to play in the World Series in two leagues.

    Why is Darvish tired? He pitched 1 2/3 innings on his first outing. He jus got pulled again after 1 2/3.

    Whatever stuff Darvish has doesn’t work against Houston. They eat up his pitching.

    Dodgers wiped out on the base baths in the third by a hard line drive and quick throw to a bag [phone call] Good. Go Giants. Disclaimer: I take no special pleasure in the Astros winning this thing, although they are a great team that’s fun to watch. So are the Dodgers, and I tip my cap to them in 2017. But I hate them above all, and the bragging rights differential between winning a pennant and winning a World Serious is serious stuff.

    @Steve in the ATL: I think having your starting catcher speared by a baserunner, leading to him being out for the rest of the series didn’t help in 1991. If one was attempting a Reaper’s Trident in lucha libre or a Rhino’s Gore in Extreme Championship Wrestling, that was an excellent move by the Twins base runner. In baseball it was way out of line. And dangerous as hell too!

    I think that in terms of management it was a fine line. Bobby Cox was usually excellent in terms of tactical adjustments to his lineup, however that tactical brilliance only led to overall (strategic) success one time. But he had some players he was trying to coax one or two last good seasons out of. And a couple with series issues, such as Smoltz’s performance anxiety (one out of five pitchers over a certain age…). The lineup was often either stronger than it appeared on paper or weaker than it appeared on paper.

    Multiple people were shot on Wednesday inside a Walmart in a Denver suburb, local police said.

    Police in Thornton, Colorado, did not release any information about any of the victims and it was not clear if an assailant had been taken into custody. Thornton is about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Denver.

    “We’ve got multiple parties down, we’re still trying to ascertain what their conditions are,” Officer Victor Avila of the Thornton Police Department told Reuters.

    Two men are dead after a shooting inside the Walmart Super Center at 9901 Grant St. in Thornton, police confirmed.

    Hundreds of emergency responders ringed Thornton Town Center shopping center Wednesday after the shooting was was reported around 6:30 p.m.

    Police initially reported that “multiple parties” were down in the shooting. An hour later, Thornton Police Department tweeted “at this time this is not an active shooter.”

    Thornton Town Center is a big-box shopping center that backs to Interstate 25 south of 104th Avenue. It includes several other retailers including The Home Depot. It’s also the location of a Cinebarre theater and McDonald’s.

    People who had been in the store flooded the parking lot of the Golden Corral restaurant, overlooking the shopping center from the south.

    Aaron Stephens, 44, was in the self-checkout line at Walmart when he heard a single shot fired, and the two more bursts of gunfire. He said customers started screaming and running for the exits.

    “I was scared,” Stephens said. “I feared for my life.”

    Stephens, who has lived in Thornton for 20 years, said he saw someone being taken into custody after the shooting.

    A bit of trivia: When Brandon Morrow relieved Darvish, he tied two World Series records. The more significant is that he became only the 2nd pitcher to appear in 7 games in a single World Series. (The first was Darold Knowles for the A’s in 1973.) The less significant is that he became about the 1,000th player of any kind to appear in 7 games in a single World Series (a record also tied tonight by about 15 other players). This is assuming that MLB really only counts the 7-game World Series; otherwise, there probably are a dozen or so players who appeared in 9 games in a single Series.

    The Astros’ “Tequila Sunrise” unis are very much of a piece, by comparison. I like them unconditionally.

    Okay, so you made me check. You are, of course, correct that none of the official World Series ever went 9 games. It turns out, though, that 15 players in the first official Series in 1903 played in all 8 games and 13 players in the 1912 Series played in all 8 games.

    Well this game was something of an anticlimax, but it was a great series anyway. Congrats to the Astros.

    The official scorer gave the win to Morton, which is kind of interesting. I don’t think it was wrong, but in the regular season it probably would have gone to Peacock, with Morton getting the save.

    The Dodgers are a heck of a team, and they played their hearts out. But I’m happy to see my hometown team win. After making it through Harvey, this win means a lot to me. Yeah, it sucks that Ted Cruz is a carpetbagger Texan, but this native is still proud tonight. Go Astros!

    I’m normally a cynical duck, but man that incredibly well timed Carlos Correa proposal had me some dust in my eyes. This is why I love baseball, it’s an incredibly weird and mostly warm game. It surprises in so many ways. Seriously though, the last two world series are the stuff of legends. Wait till next year!
