Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

T R E 4 5 O N

Republicans do not trust women.

In after Baud. Damn.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Nothing worth doing is easy.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Projection: Ralph Northam (D) has been elected next governor of VA, defeating Ed Gillespie (R). #VAGOV

— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) November 8, 2017

This doesn’t mean Northram ran a great campaign. He shouldn’t have freaked about the Latino Victory Fund ad, because no one gives a fuck. Also too no one gives that much of a fuck about his reaction either, so it didn’t hurt him much. But you never throw your supporters under the bus. Leave that shit for Bill Clinton circa 1992.

The environment is very good for Democrats.

Northam has a slim lead with 34% reporting. If what a commenter (forgot who) said earlier is correct, the low populations (R, of course) tend to report in first, with the higher density areas (more D) coming in later. If so, the outlook is good. Many fingers crossed.

That’s a hot link, the exact numbers will change but it looks very likely Northram will win.

Virginia is looking even better than I’d hoped. If my eyeball count is right, Dems lead in 51 of the 100 House of Delegates races. This chamber is heavily gerrymandered for the Republicans and the current seating is 66-34 for the Republicans even though VA has been (lightish) blue for several elections. I was hoping for substantive gains. If we win it, then we may be able to win even gerrymandered statehouses and that’s a gamechanger.

    This is good news.

The sea change that occurred when California turned from red to blue was not trumpeted with any fanfare. I don’t recall any surprise polling that indicated a fundamental realignment was in the offing, nothing like that. California’s state republican party simply drifted so far into dingbat-right territory they were (finally) perceived by most sensible Californians- even erstwhile republicans- as absolute political loons. Which is not to say they don’t still get elected, but even the ones that do are on the ropes nowadays.

2013 for VA was the first time since 1973 that VA voted for a Gov of the same party as President.

The projected D victory is the largest D victory since 1985.

NYT is currently at Northam +8.6%. Given the conservative nature of these predictions I wouldn’t be surprised to see his lead grow and grow.

In District 32, Reid is beating the incumbent Republican by *18%*! Yow! Generally the Republican incumbents who are losing are losing by around 10% or so. That’s an earthquake. I think Nate is hitting the right point here: Does this kind of result push a few more Republicans in swing districts to retire? That makes holding the House harder for the GOP. Incumbents are almost always more likely to win in a tough district. Right now, we are seeing a lot of GOP retirements in the House, but many of them are members who are about to lose their chairmanships because of term limits or members who may just be ready to move on. They are in safe districts. Dems have to hope tonight leads to a few more GOP House members who live in competitive districts deciding to retire.

I was just thinking, which is always a dangerous thing when I do it, that one of the factors in last year’s election (though not the only and maybe not even a determinant one) was complacency on the part of some Dems. Obviously the Dem voters today, wherever they are, not just in VA, were not complacent. At the same time, I don’t think reduced GOP voter numbers was due to complacency. I think it was due to their being dispirited, disappointed and discouraged.

Its important we keep them feeling that way. And I think the Dems have to look at 2018 as kicking the opposition when its down on the ground. Don’t give them a chance to get up. We’ve let up in the past and look what we have to show for it.

Just got home from observing the closing in my precinct in Fairfax County. It’s become a reliably blue precinct in the 10 years I’ve been doing this. We had 1817 voters, Northam got 1107 votes to Gillespie’s 687 and Hyra’s 21. I was outside handing out sample ballots on and off during the day and there seemed to be more enthusiastic D voters all day long. More younger voters than usual in this cycle.

Many people stopped to talk, in the rain, about how vital they felt this election was. That never happens except in Presidential elections. People are pissed, not just at Trump, but at Republicans in general.

Virginia is setting the bar pretty high. We may have to dump Rohrbacher AND Walters next year in order to keep up.

@Kay: It would be worth it to really watch and listen to what the Usual Suspects say and how they react in the next couple of days. From what Corner Stone said, it sounds like Toddles has gone off the rails. I think their behavior will reveal a lot about the media.

    Donald J. Trump‏Verified account @realDonaldTrump

Ed Gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what I stand for. Don’t forget, Republicans won 4 out of 4 House seats, and with the economy doing record numbers, we will continue to win, even bigger than before!
    5:40 PM – 7 Nov 2017

Seemed to me that he was sticking pretty close to the Trump playbook, but whatever. As usual, Trump blames everybody but himself.

That’s pretty sweet irony… those bigots played their bet and lost big. Americans (not all of us, but a good majority by now) are sick and tired of bigots telling us who to hate and how. Screw those folks!!

@Ken: I am sure I am fucking up the details (fellow Ohio residents, please come to my rescue if I do), but Issue 1 basically prevents defense attorney’s from dragging crime victim’s past up in court if the past has no relevance to the case. Issue 2 would require the state to pay no more for prescription drugs than the Department of Veteran’s Affairs pays.

I think that is the gist of it.

Northam should have come out against the Pipelines. It is a big issue here in my area. Every vote that went for Hyra was because he was the only candidate that was opposed to the pipeline. I voted Northam because the alternative was so much worse, but didn’t like doing it. Tom Perrielo, had he won the primary, would have won statewide even bigger than Northam. No use crying over spilled beans. I am ecstatic about the outcome.
