Looks like Roy Moore’s not going anywhere. Fox has decided to argue about the exact age of the victims and the Alabama GOP is comparing Moore to Jesus.
A new polls shows that Jones and Moore are tied. Look, people, in many ways it would be better for Democrats if Moore wins. I could be wrong but I think that having a pedophile from Alabama in the Senate turns off white suburban voters in the north.
But here’s the thing: the Democrat in the race, Doug Jones, sounds great. You can read about his prosecution of the Sixteenth Street church bombing here. People like him need to be supported when they run for office in deep red areas. To me, it’s that simple.
Anyway, the more attention this race gets, the better for Democrats. So let’s blow through our fundraising goal for Jones if we can today. I may even raise it later, because I think this race is really important.
TenguPhule
You’re wrong.
Republicans have crossed all the lines.

I understand and appreciate the thinking behind this, but to me it reflects the mindset of the cult of the savvy, something I’ve abandoned after last year’s election.
Go Doug Jones!
Doug!
@Baud:
That’s why I’m rejecting it and going all out for Jones.
Baud
@TenguPhule: White suburban voters in the North aren’t necessarily Republican. They tend to be swingy voters, which is why there are popular Republican governors in many deep blue states. They also don’t really care about who the Senator from Alabama is or how he behaves IMHO.
dmsilev
I think a bigger deal would be the narrative “Republicans are so fucking crazy that a Democrat just won a Senate seat in Alabama”. Also would do interesting things to the GOP tax “reform” bill. So yeah, pretty much all of the incentives are lining up behind “let’s help Doug Jones and take our best shot at it”. I donated yesterday.
Baud
@Doug!: Yes, you did support Doug Jones, but it seemed like you were doing so because he was a good guy, not because the theory was discredited.

There is only a marginal strand out there of suggesting that the charges are fabricated. Most of Moore’s defenders are stipulating (in the legal term-of-art) that the charges are true.
The important point is that if Moore were a Democrat, he would have been lynched by now — literally torn flesh from bone, in broad public — and the people who are making noises about prosecuting his accusers would instead be making noises about prosecuting the entire leadership (such as it be) of the Alabama Democrat [sic] Party.

@Baud: We’ll see how the media blitz goes. If Fox and the NYT can sell “it was consentual, everybody makes poor decisions at 14” then I think you and Doug are going to find yourselves severely disillusioned by those voters. And I wouldn’t count on women voters either, white women especially are some of the worst on average when it comes to sex crimes. I know it sounds counter intuitive, but these women tend to blame the victims, which is why even when you have women serving on the jury, rape is still one the hardest crimes to prosecute successfully.

“having a pedophile from Alabama in the Senate”

Doug – If Doug Jones wins, the Republican majority in the Senate is cut to 51-49. Makes it much easier to stop the worst features of the “Reward the Rich and Screw Everyone Else” Republican tax plan and regain control in 2018. @rk: Hillary called bigots deplorable. Some of that will overlap with white women republicans, but I’d like to keep it straight because the media completely misrepresented what she said.

No, not in the least.
This is who they are. This is who they have been for a long time. Even the ones who wouldn’t think to do these things themselves, put party above all else. And the party is corrupt, in many, many ways.
People tell you that they support republicans, ask them why they continue to support pedophiles, thieves, cheaters, liars…… because democrats do not. How about Edwards, sounded OK, for about 2 weeks. Then the truth came out and he was dumped like the turd he is.
