Here are some of today’s top match-ups:
My crappy Florida Gators are playing the South Carolina Gamecocks at noon. My grandmother, who is almost 100 years old, is a South Carolina alum. If the ‘Cocks win (likely!), she will trash-talk me. Ever been trash-talked by an ancient Gamecock? Not fun.
Auburn-Georgia should be an interesting game. We’ll get a better idea of what ‘Bama’s got when they play Mississippi State. And all of South Florida is abuzz about the Miami-Notre Dame. I am definitely not a ‘Canes fan, but the only time I root for Notre Dame is when they play Florida State. So, Go ‘Canes.

At TPM, Josh Marshall elaborates on a NY Times piece about the Trump spiderweb:
“..This revelation is important for at least three reasons.
First: The most mundane is that Miller was at the highest level of Trump’s campaign…
Second: Miller was also one of the advisors pressing hard for President Trump to fire James Comey….
Third: Miller came to Trump via Jeff Sessions…”.
To which I add a fourth:
#4: All of which means Miller now has to tap his inner Dirty Harry by asking himself, “Do I feel lucky today”? Can he count on a presidential pardon, in which case he’ll merely spend the rest of his life answering questions honestly, or almost certainly be tried and convicted for the crimes he will have copped to by then; or he’ll cut the best deal he can with Mueller and sing like a canary, thus insuring he’ll see the sun rise and set beyond prison walls again before he dies.
“Well? Do you feel lucky, punk”?
Amir Khalid
@No Drought No More:
A kweeble: Dirty Harry doesn’t ask himself that; he tells the punk to do it.

“Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a Republican who serves as the commission’s vice chair, blasted the lawsuit as “baseless and paranoid.” He said he hasn’t received any communications either, and said the commission’s work has been stalled by eight lawsuits, the unrelated arrest of a staff member and the death of a fellow commissioner”.
#1 No man is an island, and it’s a shame about the death of Kobach’s colleague.
#2 Arrest? What class of criminal has Kobach had been hiring over there, anyway?
#3 But above all, kudos the go-getters who have filed the lawsuits in question. This long toothed American salutes you all.

Not that there’s a glut of college football on TV or anything, but Amherst-Williams is on one of the Boston cable sports networks right now. As a Wesleyan grad naturally I hate both teams, but it is nice to see shots of Williamstown, one of the loveliest towns in Mass. Also definitely the coldest.

Good grief, the Gophers are stomping on Nebraska. I mean, I realize that the Cornhuskers aren’t anything close to what they once were, but Minnesota fans still have nightmares about the 84-13 obliteration in 1983, when Tom Osborne did everything possible to avoid running up the score, and the Gophers were so bad that it didn’t work. I’m pretty sure that Nebraska put in the cheerleaders halfway through the third quarter.
James E. Powell
My Beloved Buckeyes are really kicking ass. Now that it no longer matters what they do. He said bitterly.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: Oh, gods, I’m looking at a box score of that game, and it’s absurd. Nebraska only had 25 first down, to Minnesota’s 21, because Nebraska averaged more than 11 yards per play, and had 6 touchdowns of more than 40 yards. Minnesota actually won time of possession 37:25 to 22:35, since Nebraska kept scoring so quickly. Minnesota also won the turnover battle 3-2.

And you have a nice day enjoying watching people inflice brain damage on themselves. Have a beer. Because, that’s what’s really important isn’t it? You having a spectator sport to watch on the weekends.
No, really, have some tasty nachos too. Those players are there for your entertainment. They are not real people. And, hell, when they are crippled and can’t even remember their phone number, you won’t see it.
raven
@Amaranthine RBG: Eat shit motherfucker.

My wife, who’s got two degrees from USC, approves of your grandma’s trash talk. (I got my doctorate there – that’s how we met – but since I’ve dropped football on account of the CTE business, I’ve got no dog in this fight.)
raven
@low-tech cyclist: Yea because they just found out that football was risky.
Amaranthine RBG
@raven:
Yeah, those 9, 10, and 11 year olds know what they are getting into: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/19/sports/football/tackle-football-brain-youth.html
Hey, two years too young to get fondled by Roy Moore, but plenty old enough to rationally weigh the risks to themselves 30 or 40 years in the future, right? I mean, if there’s one thing that children excel at, it is studiously deliberating on the consequences of their actions.
Oh, no, you’re right – its the parent who are making these decisions for them. Silly me. You know, parents like you who think it’s totally worth it to risk brain damage because of TOUCHDOWN!!!!
raven
@Amaranthine RBG: Are you suffering from it too, is that why you just post the same shit every week?
Downpuppy
@No Drought No More: The Election Fraud staffer arrest was for child porn, because of course

@raven:
No, I just realized you’re right.
Sure some kid that has been playing for 8 or 10 years by the time he is a high school senior has a choice to make: keep playing brain injury ball and get a scholarship worth $100,000 or “Just say no” and decide to stop playing and take out student loans or, heck, the world needs ditch-diggers, too.
So when that high school kid decides to keep playing football, he knows exactly what he is getting into. Totally on him.
So enjoy! Just watching and cheering and buying tickets, and delivering ad revenue that pays for all of this has nothing to do with what happens. You are just one person at a huge rally cheering – surely you have no fault.

GO DAWGS!!! And Betty, since you just put these threads up and then bail why don’t you just forget about it. Obviously Mr West Virginia has seen he light, you may as well too.
Shalimar
@raven: He’s a troll. He doesn’t give a crap about the kids playing football. He just likes the sport of feeling holier than thou.

I’m really torn by the Ga – Auburn game. My sister in law, very conservative to the point that my Bro had to become conservative to maintain their marriage, is a Georgia Peach Pit. But she went to and graduated from Auburn and became a CPA, only to learn that she hated accounting.
My problem is which team to root against… or just don’t watch that game. It may be not on broadcast here, which would remove the issue.
It is pretty out today, but cold. I’m going to do some gritty cleaning inside as a result. The end of next week it’s supposed to warm up some, and I’m going to take the slider glass doors off their track and replace their runners, which appear to have deteriorated over the past 25 years.
I’ll listen to the radio feed, I don’t think WVU is on TV this week.
Steeplejack
@Betty Cracker:
Hey, I appreciate the football posts. For some reason, despite my usually good Google-fu, I have no luck finding a one-stop roundup of the day’s games that is easy to look at.

@J R in WV:
West Virginia is on ESPN2 right now.
Duane
@raven: Looks like Georgia is in for a tough one at Auburn. OSU-ISU was a really good game. ISU’s the best 6- 4 team in the country by far.
low-tech cyclist
@raven: Boy howdy, we’re just looking for a fight today, aren’t we?
So sorry, don’t have the time for it. But based on your reactions in this thread, I’d strongly recommend doing something about your anger issues.
Duane
TD Auburn. They lead #1 Georgia, 16-7.
James E. Powell
Wisconsin’s looking very tough. They’re my second favorite Big Ten team – after My Beloved Buckeyes – and I hope they win out and get into the championship.
Betty Cracker
@James E. Powell: Just saw a half time clip — Wisconsin looked terrific.
Duane
Auburn extends their lead over Georgia, 23-7. Someone check on Raven.
Duane
30-7 Auburn. Georgia looks lost. Who’s gonna be the new #1?
Betty Cracker
@Duane: Bama? The Canes, maybe, if they kick the crap outta Notre Dame.
raven
@Duane: I’m fine. If you’ve been watching it we have made a bucket load of mistakes. Dropped TD’s, dumb penalties, and turnovers. I’d love a rematch with these dude in the SEC Championship game. And, we still have a shot, not a great one but the 4th qtr is a long one.
raven
@Duane: No way anyone jumps Bama if we lose.
J R in WV
@Steeplejack:
Yea, we don’t get cable, not enough people in the neighborhood, can’t get sat, too many trees, won’t cut great oaks down to see TV. So I’m listening to the radio/online and watching ESPN Gameplay, which runs about 12 seconds ahead of the announcers. WVU is holding in there against K State.
@raven:
Good luck, dude, I decided I’ll root for any team playing an Alabama team. Fuck Auburn! And ‘Bama!
Duane
@raven: Yeah, you’re a Georgia fan, you’re used to this.Georgia’s QB doesn’t have it for this kind of comeback. Depending on tonight’s finals, a lot of teams could claim #1.
raven
@Duane: Used to what?
Duane
@Betty Cracker: If Miami wins it makes the rankings tighter. A big win, perhaps they leapfrog Bama.
mainmata
@No Drought No More: Miller is a Bannon “familiar” so not sure how much loyalty Trump feels towards him. Given Trump’s personality, he is just as likely to throw Miller under the bus as to pardon him. The ones who will be quickly pardoned will be the Flynns, Don, Jr. and Prince Jared. Of course, the Flynns and Jared are liable for financial crimes in NY State so that’s beyond Trump’s reach. There may be other crimes that I don’t know about that aren’t subject to federal pardons.
Duane
@raven: Used to tough games against tough teams. SEC and all.
Betty Cracker
MS State is hanging tough!

At the Miami-ND game with my Trump-worshipping, UM alum father-in-law. The sweet old bastard hasn’t been this excited since the election.
david
That gold chain on U of Miami’s sideline is getting passed around more than a teenage girl’s phone number at a Roy Moore party.
Duane
Wow! Notre Dame’s QB play goes from bad to worse. Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma is going to win the Heisman.
Go Miami! Go Mississippi State!
david
All can be thankful that U of Miami let off the gas and ‘only’ won 41-8. Because, Heaven forbid that you score TOO much on Notre Dame, lest the entire nation whine about it for years on end.
