My ailing father – 93 years old, a victim & defeater of Nazism, a right-wing Orthodox Jew – was asked by the physician in the emergency room, seeking to ascertain his cognitive state:
"Who's the President?"
My dad: "You don't want to know".
Jeez, I love my dad.

When my mom was going through chemo in 2004 she had a bad reaction to something new that they tried. When she came to they went through a round of questions to check her cognitive state as well, and when they asked her who the President was, she answered “George Stupid Bush” with a great deal of venom.

It’s Sunday in December, so of course I’m watching Hallmark movies…
Lord, I’m a sucker for a Danica McKellar Hallmark movie…between her, Candace Cameron-Bure, Lacey Chabert and Kellie Martin, they got me addicted to these darn movies. Now watching one w/McKellar…one of my favs from Christmas 2016!

For some reason this reminds me of a great Walter Matthau story. It seems Matthau had some kinda accident on a movie set and broke his back. He was lying there waiting for the ambulance. Jack Lemmon wants to help, comes up to him and asks, “Walter, are you comfortable?”
Matthau: “Eh, I make a living”.

There is this thing in Hollywood where child stars seem to have to prove they are now adults. FOr the boys it often is taking a ‘dark’ role. FOr girls it exhibits itself as provocative photos. How can someone be against the 12th amendment anyway? how would that even work?

@Tazj: I was way too laid back in dealing with years of gang attacks in school. I just fended them off when they cropped up, mostly because I didn’t want to get the unfair rep of being a trouble maker. There were stories — maybe it was only one, can’t recall — that the anticipated turnout of black voters may not hit expectations. The story (or stories) had some anecdotal stuff along the lines of “What has Jones done to make black lives better?” I don’t recall if they had actually polling numbers. But either way, one would hope that hearing about Moore’s wishing for slavery to return (so to speak), combined with his desire for the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to go away, would seal the deal for the fence-sitters (if they truly exist).

@WaterGirl: More seriously, when she was younger her forehead appeared very large because she was both very thin and hadn’t really grown into her adult face. It was the only part of her that really appeared to be awkward teenage physiognomy. So they’d have her in bangs of various sorts to try to cover it up, which, of course, just called more attention to it. Similar to Christina Ricci for a couple of years.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Steve in the ATL: It was pretty sad, I think they said that arround 50 may have perished in all the recent fires.
OzarkHillbilly
@Tazj: I am unsure of the proper course. Yes I mean that those celebrity “likes” might make him more of a target. In my day (late 60s- early 70s) it surely would have. If one of those celebs came to the school and hung out with the kid all day long (going to each class with him) for that day at least the kid would be the most popular in the school and the bullies… well every kid in school would see them for what they really are and it might actually help. I think.
I know people will condemn me for this but when my oldest son came to me in the early ’90s complaining of a bully I told him “Bob, I can come into school and talk to your teachers and the principal, and they can talk to this kids parents, but at the end of the day you still have to walk home from school alone. My advice is to pick up a brick and lay it along side this kid’s head.” I said that because that’s what I did (figuratively) in his place. I still got my ass kicked but I put enough of a hurt on the bully that he never bothered me again. I have no idea what my son did and even less of an idea whether it was even close to the right thing to say.
These days bullying is taken far more seriously by school administrators (or so I read) and one actually has options that extend beyond getting one’s ass kicked. I whole heartedly recommend you push every one of them to it’s fullest extent.
In later years I would go to my sons’ school with a slide show of some of my expeditionary exploits with all of my caving gear laid out for all their classmates to see and fondle and wonder at (in those years they were living in Bourbon, MO and I was trying to open their classmates eyes to the wider world beyond Crawford Co.) and my sons got to tell their friends of a few of their own caving exploits and for that day at least they were the cool kids at school. .
I wish I could be more helpful but as I said to somebody recently I don’t have any answers, the best I can offer is an insight or 2 and as inadequate as they are I hope they help.

@lamh36: I like their cozy mysteries. Started watching “Flower Shop Mysteries” last year because I’ve always liked Brooke Shields, and it snowballed. Now I watch them all.

@WaterGIrl: yep…it was filmed in 2015, but released as a part of the Christmas 2016 movie season on Hallmark.
They do that all the time…they film movies continuously during the year and release like 4 new movies at least every 2months…usually do coincide with fall, winter, spring…and for holidays like Valentine’s and of course Christmas…
The cookie cutter nature of the movies an filming translates to about at least 12-20 new “original” movies a year (they do like new movie every weekend night for their lead up to Christmas, I believe) for Hallmark, so that means the film for the next year…so filmed in 2015, but not shown until Christmas 2016/

@lamh36:
They have a new just made for Netflix Christmas Movie, complete with a Prince.

That wouldn’t surprise me. Shouldn’t matter, but of course it would.

Mike Tomlin’s inspirational defensive talks to his team seem to be falling short.

@lamh36: You’re absolutely right – to this generation (these generations?) Chris Evans will always be THE Captain America.
Still, the comic book companies tend to go through these cycles and so I suspect the movies will too. We’ll have Sebastian Stan for a while, and then maybe Anthony Mackie, and by then…well, this is where movie-time vs comic-book-time differs…by the time this all cycles back around, Evans will be up there in years. We’ll see. I am anticipating the ‘big three’ of the Avengers (Cap, Iron Man, Thor) to all be dead, retired, or gone by the end of A4 at the latest, to make way for the new crop of heroes they’re bringing up.

@dmsilev: Repealing direct election of Senators has been a favorite cause of conservatives for a long time. The argument they give is a “state’s rights”/originalist one, that the Senators are supposed to represent the states and the Representatives the people, so logically the Senators ought to be chosen by state legislatures and only the Representatives elected directly. Of course, it would also multiply the power of state-level gerrymandering.

@Mnemosyne: @?BillinGlendaleCA: so bottom line is that I left town and then everything went to shit? Typical.

The BEST thing I bought at the grocery store after our winter storm was some hot chocolate mix!!! I’ve had like 3 cup already!!!!

“No, Mr President, the cable’s still out. Kellyanne has a VHS tape of your massive inauguration crowd if you’d like to watch yourself give a speech…”

@Jeffro: i can def see it for all three since they’ve likely fulfilled their individual character trilogy contracts. Of the 3, I think I’ve read that RDJ might be interested in an Iron Man 4? But of the 3, only RDJ has had “box office” and critical success outside of the Marvel universe…Evans and Helmsworth’s box office buzz outside of MCEU is lukewarm to flat out cold at best…
All that to say, I can see them “retiring” the characters, but NOT outright killing them or recasting them

@Schlemazel:
We have them in Pasadena and they seem to work OK. Most of the time and for most of the people. Haven’t heard of too many accidents because of them but I do see people that have a lot of trouble with red lights and with pedestrians lawfully crossing the street or walking on the sidewalk. (I walk a lot and routinely expect to get hit on a regular basis. It’s been close a few times. I treat car drivers that try to run me down as bullies. Many of them act exactly the way you’d expect a bully to act when called out for the bullshit driving)

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I assume that this is NBC trying to rehabilitate Megyn Kelly as well its reputation, what with killing the Weinstein story being closely followed by Matt Lauer’s demise. Still, it’s a good thing that some MSM outlet got around to Trump’s outrageous conduct. And what about all those outtakes from the Apprentice we keep hearing about? Now might be a good time to break them out.

@OzarkHillbilly:
A lot of burrowing animals dig connecting tunnels, probably most. These fires are hot enough to melt aluminum and to distort steel but they also move very, very fast. And they will just go around houses. Went up to Santa Rosa for Thanksgiving and we drove through one of the burned out areas. Three or four houses completely destroyed, a house untouched and the next 3 or 4 more burned. And on and on for miles. We were just a couple of miles from my friends house. There was the story (with video) of a very large dog who ran and the people had to leave, the adult kids went back to see what their parents house looked like and out bounds the dog, not even singed. The house was completely gone, down to the ground as were the houses around it. OTOH I also saw pics of animals that were burned and some rather badly that got taken to shelters and treated. Have no idea how many lived. Anyway if that fire moves over the burrow and leaves an air supply clear, survival actually is possible.

Yup, and yup, and the fact that it’s Kelly, given their history, will give the coverage a twist that will make trump crazier and the coverage more heated, etc. But to me, Kelly will always be “Santa Claus is white, and so is Jesus”. Really all I need to know about her.

@Brachiator:
Indeed.
Was looking at an exhibit yesterday on the (area local) lead-up to a state-level Womans’ Suffrage vote (1917, 100 years ago, part of the lead-up to the 19th Amendment), and was amused by the anti arguments, which mostly do not even fit into my mind as coherent thoughts. Some of what we now believe to be self-evident will be viewed with similar lack of comprehension 100 years from now. Verbatim, one card (retyped from photo):

Another thing about Danica McKellar is that she graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a BS in Mathematics and has written four books on mathematics for teenagers, especially girls.

@Jeffro: The MCU has already lasted longer than many movie franchises go between continuity reboots. By the time they want to bring all the original heroes back, it’ll be time for that.
