Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

The lights are all blinking red.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

People are weird.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Thank you ALABAMA!!

— Doug Jones (@GDouglasJones) December 13, 2017

The good people of Alabama will be voting for Doug Jones and against Roy Moore.

Others will also vote.

— Greg Dworkin (@DemFromCT) December 12, 2017

So it turns out God's plan for Roy Moore might be for him to sit down and shut the fuck up.

— Gary Legum (@GaryLegum) December 13, 2017

Jones finishes at 93.5% of Hillary Clinton's raw vote total.
Moore at 49.8% of Trump's.

— Phil Kerpen (@kerpen) December 13, 2017

Cheers to all the craven assholes who knew better but endorsed a guy who molested a 14 year old girl anyway.

— Tim Miller (@Timodc) December 13, 2017

At the risk of stating the obvious: Donald Trump went all in hard, 100%, zero equivocation for Roy Moore. And he got smoked. Bad.

— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) December 13, 2017

To be honest, I’m actually curious how many votes were tipped — or just not cast — after Moore’s Big Barn Burning Hate Fest last night. Sure, it pleased Moore’s base, and no doubt the small-dollar donors who provide his steady income, so he’s got no reason to regret the show. But it’s gotta sting that so many out-of-state Repubs are suddenly seized with the urge to “refudiate” Judge Roy, like he was some shoeless drifter snuck under their big tent and stank up the joint…

Hey reporters how about you go talk to the black Alabamians who just elected Doug Jones and ask THEM about Trump?

— Oliver Willis (@owillis) December 13, 2017

Great job, all you reporters with your anecdotes about how black voters weren’t enthusiastic!

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) December 13, 2017

If Republicans can lose in Alabama, they can lose anywhere

I imagine recent donors to the RNC are having feelings right now.

Roy Moore thinks homosexuality is sin & should be illegal. He wants to make immigrants illegal. But people are not illegal. Injustice & policy violence vs the poor should be. It’s sad how some of Moore’s followers are being fooled to vote against their own interests & God’s.

Before we get the results, I'd just like to thank Steve Bannon for showing us how to lose the reddest state in the union and Governor Ivey for the opportunity to make this national embarrassment a reality

— Josh Holmes (@HolmesJosh) December 13, 2017

This is McConnell’s CoS. The NRSC certainly has much better numbers than the exits.

This is VERY encouraging. https://t.co/lB4X02qkHV

Gotta be a pony in this pile somewheres!!!…

Win by Dem Doug Jones has silver lining for Senate GOPers. GOP loses AL seat. But Jones win robs Dems of chance to link all Senate GOP candidates with Roy Moore in 2018 midterms

— Chad Pergram (@ChadPergram) December 13, 2017

Speaking of big-time luzers…

If the Ds don’t win AL, think about how weak they are. A candidate who can’t be someone accused of child moleststion. So extreme on abortion they’re out of the mainstream. Liberalism is a killer for Democrats.

I didn’t dare to believe that Jones could win. While I am ecstatic at his victory, a quick look at the final results limits my joy. With the most noxious, toxic, and unqualified candidate (maybe ever, but at least since Trump), the GOP came within a whisker of winning this seat. Huge thanks to the good people who cast their ballots for Jones. Nothing but contempt for those who are so lost they voted for the pervert.

I don’t think that was the problem. It’s the classic Tea Party problem the Republicans have been struggling with for a while. The rabid base is strong enough to give their candidate the nomination, but doing so risks losing enough RINOs to throw the election. Strange was the better general election candidate, but teh crazy is strong enough in Alabama to keep him from winning the primary.

So I’ve been thinking. I’m debating buying a 12-month subscription for DC Comics. I’ve heard some good things about their Rebirth event. However, 75-100 or so dollars for 3-4 titles is a lot of dough. Should I do it? Right now at my wage slave part time job I’m lucky if I make 500 dollars a month (money isn’t an issue for me. I just need some change for gas money and small bills and such). It’s so close to the holidays too. But I really want to.

Partly I’m being funny, but only partly. The child-molesting rumors were apparently rife in Moore’s stomping grounds, such that Strange’s people maybe should have heard something and followed up – but, beyond that, there’s a bunch of stuff anyone with Google and patience could have found, that Strange’s people didn’t. The fact that Moore pocketed $1M from a “charity”. Moore writing an article against women’s suffrage, published just a few years ago. Moore coming out against not just the 17th amendment (which Republicans inexplicably claim to dislike) but against all the post-bill-of-rights amendments. The sheer depth of Moore’s ignorance on the issues. Moore was a target-rich environment, in countless ways even Republican base voters could dislike, and Strange just missed all of it.

Fortunately for all of us, Black voters in Alabama turned out to be actual adults who didn’t allow a few dumb missteps to distract them from the main goal of preventing Moore from winning.

Agreed, caucuses make participation time-consuming and difficult. But other recommendations of the commission have merit. Wherever you come down on the open/closed primary (independent no R) question, we have to get rid of barriers to voting. Some registration deadlines are too long, NY’s is October the year before. If Dems want to make it easier for everyone to vote, they should include their primary process. It’s up to the states, but wherever they have the wherewithal to do so, they should.

ETA: I don’t know how much the superdelegate change would affect things. Even reducing the number of them, the institutional support still exists. It’s just not a good look when the whole party apparatus coalesces around a single candidate before anyone votes.

Uh huh. The Atlantic. African American Voters Made Doug Jones a U.S. Senator in Alabama

Ahead of Alabama’s special Senate election, there was a clear narrative about the state’s black voters: They weren’t mobilizing.

Six of 10 black voters stopped by a New York Times reporter in a shopping center last week didn’t know an election was even going on, a result the reporter took to mean overall interest was low. The Washington Post determined that black voters weren’t “energized.” HuffPost concluded that black voters weren’t “inspired.”

If Democratic candidate Doug Jones lost to GOP candidate Roy Moore, weakened as he was by a sea of allegations of sexual assault and harassment, then some of the blame seemed likely to be placed on black turnout.

But Jones won, according to the AP, and that script has been flipped on its head. Election day defied the narrative, and challenged traditional thinking about racial turnout in off-year elections and special elections. Precincts in the state’s “black belt,” the swathe of dark, fertile soil where the African American population is concentrated, reported long lines throughout the day, and as the night waned and red counties dominated by rural white voters continued to report disappointing results for Moore, votes surged in from urban areas and the black belt. By all accounts, black turnout exceeded expectations, perhaps even passing previous off-year results. Energy was not a problem.

More from the Atlantic article. Author is Vann R. Newkirk II

These results demolish the pre-established media narrative about black voters in the state, and defy conventional wisdom. Black voters were informed and mobilized to go vote, and did so even in the face of significant barriers.

I previously noted that Alabama is one of the hardest states in the country to vote—especially so for black voters, and that voter suppression efforts could have had strong effects on black votes. Tuesday night’s returns are all the more remarkable because of the surge of turnout that appears to have taken place in spite of those very real barriers.

The grassroots organizing in black communities by groups like local NAACP chapters was more muscular than it had even been in the 2016 general election. In the lead-up to Tuesday’s contest, voting-rights groups registered people with felonies, targeted awareness campaigns at people who might not have had proper ID, and focused specifically on knocking down the structures in place that keep black voters away from the polls. Their efforts immediately become a case study in how to do so in a region that has, since the Supreme Court’s 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision curtailing the 1965 Voting Rights Act, become a bastion of new voter-suppression laws, including new voter-ID laws.

enjoying this outcome…, an unexpected reversal in fortune in a place that Trump won by huge margins just over a year ago…

the struggle continues… more hearings, more phone calls, more registration drives and the forever struggle to change the media framing of the issues in a pro-GOP fashion.

Lets keep electing Democrats and obtain the numbers needed to indict this political abomination and his entire staff of goons and if need be, hold his political party accountable for aiding and abetting this travesty of an administration. We really need to LISTEN to what our entire coalition is saying, and have them be seen charting the course and articulating policy.

I’ve frankly had enough of white guys mansplaining things, frankly folks of my gender and melanin content obviously have issues hearing rational concepts discussed by others who do not share their gender or melanin mixture, so perhaps its time to check ourselves and defer to the majority of voices, rather than keep on this same tortured path.

Yes, I have gradually come to realize there’s a huge dose of White Privilege in the “oh, the candidate doesn’t *inspire* me, why should I vote…” bullshit.

I remember during the Obamacare debate, people of color were out there busting their ass to get Obamacare passed, despite how flawed it was. Me and my fellow White Privileged snowflakes were protesting against it because it wasn’t Single Payer.

In a group of people in Feinstein’s lobby, I got pulled up short by an older black woman who was working to sell the good points of Obamacare. She seemed like she’d been through some hard shit. She had no patience for me and my proto-Bernie-bro, proto-Occupy cohorts who were there to demand Medicare for All and Single Payer.

Spoiled and privileged. Go and campaign and vote dutifully and diligently for the lesser of two evils. Otherwise, all you will ever get is the worst evil possible. Kind of like what happened in 2010, 2014, and 2016, and which gave us the clusterfuck we’re stuck with now.

Children demand to be inspired. Adults do their duty.

Thanks to everyone in Alabama who did their duty. Depending on what noxious Rethug plan might be foiled by Jones’s votes in the Senate, those voters may have saved the country in the process.

I’m so happy I’m crying. Congratulations to Doug Jones and the good people in Alabama, particularly the African American community. Their courage, grit and determination inspire and help me, a hand wringing despairing Irish old white lady keep my eye on the prize.

@SarahT: True. Black voters came out in droves and made Jones’ win possible. I’m beginning to view Bernie Bros as the enemy.

@Major Major Major Major: It depends on the media you’re going to display it on: print usually requires 200dpi+, computer monitors 72dpi; I’ll leave the math as an exercise for the reader.

@SarahT: Can we cool it with the circular firing squad for at least one night?
Also, Perez did fairly well here in getting money and support to Jones behind the scenes.

I gave $100 to the Jones campaign and I live in Minnesota. Ecstatic at the results! The best $100 I have ever spent. I can now go to my grave knowing that I helped send a Bible-thumping pedophile pervert down to defeat, instead of to the U.S.Senate where he could inflict his hateful, medieval beliefs on all of us!

    @Amir Khalid:

Has anybody seen my clip-on guitar tuner? I seem to have mislaid it.

I thought I saw you put it down over there. See where I’m pointing? No, a little to the left. No, further left. See it?

What? It’s not there? I could have sworn I saw it there not 5 hours ago. Well, in that case, I can’t help, sorry.

    @David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch:

There are experts like Atrios who insist pandering to the #EconomicAnxiety of non-college whites and rural voters is the road to victory

Maybe this was just poorly done snark, but if meant seriously, do you actually read his blog?

    @David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch:
Atrios doesn’t have a clue about PA Philly suburbs. I live in one of them and this Nov the Democratic candidates swept the local elections. In my township, everything went blue except tax collector (and that candidate only lost by 11 votes to a R lady who was pretty inoffensive and had been in the job for 20+ years).

And do you know who helped knock on doors and hand out GOTV materials? Two of my retired neighbors who *used to* always have GOP candidate signs in their yards. Anecdote isn’t data, but while some Boomers may be too tribal to shift, in an area where people are Republican because their families have been R since Lincoln, I’ve seen living proof that that isn’t an ironclad rule.

    @Elizabelle:

Precincts in the state’s “black belt,” the swathe of dark, fertile soil where the African American population is concentrated…

I don’t have a substantive comment but just noticed this bit of bizarre and awkward writing.
