Let me explain the Polar Vortex @realDonaldTrump. When the poles gets warm enough Arctic air can’t evenly circulate around the poles. Cold wind currents sweep south in waves, so right now it’s warmer in Anchorage than Boston. Be patient. Eventually we'll all fry. https://t.co/RbTeaUidcT

Actually there was a bit on the news this morning that, according to a group of British and Russian scientists, the world is due to enter a mini ice age in 2021.
It’s a shame really, as I said to my brother, I was really looking forward to Christmas Day barbecues!
Thanks largely to a high-pressure system compressing air over the Great Basin, Los Angeles County could see temperatures 10 to 20 degrees warmer than the seasonal average, according to NWS Meteorologist Robbie Munroe. As a result of the high pressure, light offshore winds will prevent cool ocean breezes from reaching land.
“Somewhere in the Southwest, most likely in California, will be the hottest part of the nation through Friday,” Munroe said.
Woodland Hills was the hottest place in the country on Wednesday when the mercury peaked at 86 degrees. That was one degree warmer than the previous record set four years ago.
As it happens, the high-pressure system keeping our region unseasonably warm is the same one fueling bone-chilling conditions in the Northeast, Munroe said. Mt. Washington, in New Hampshire, hit 34 degrees below zero with a wind chill factor that made it feel like it was negative 88 degrees late Thursday morning, according to the Weather Service.
Woodland Hills is forecast to hit 87 degrees Friday, which would beat a record of 85 set in 1980. Burbank temperatures are expected to peak at 84 degrees that same day, which would tie a record set in 1963.
My bolding. Trump might want to note that it’s all connected, but that would involve pulling his head out of his lard ass.

Romanian hackers took over two-thirds of the District’s outdoor surveillance cameras just before President Trump’s inauguration, according to a federal criminal complaint unsealed Thursday.
The January attack affected 123 of the D.C. police department’s 187 outdoor surveillance cameras, leaving them unable to record for several days. Two Romanians, whom law enforcement officials describe as part of a bigger extortionist hacking group, are being charged in D.C. federal court with fraud and computer crimes.
A part of me wonders whether somebody took notes on how it was done, should the need arise in the next three years.

Yesterday the Thomas Fire was 82% contained. It’s now the biggest fire in California history, It’s been burning for over 3 weeks and has burned almost 290,000 acres, burned over 1,000 structures, damaged almost 400 others. 125,000 evacuees. Nobody knows how much it’s going to cost.
No Federal disaster Funds to date. To get the funds, the fire has to classified as a National Disaster. Hasn’t been done and trump has never mentioned it.
We went to an event with friends in Santa Paula last week. The local Fire Chief was called to a meeting in Ventura shortly after the Thomas fire started, he said he was driving 65 mph and the fire was keeping up with him. The Santa Ana winds were blowing a steady 40 the first night with gusts to 60. The fire was burning an acre a second.

Back in 1991 or ’92, the first full book I read on Global Warming said that when the record high temperatures came, we would also be seeing record lows. I asked my father, who in his retirement was a reader/reviewer for Science (the magazine of the American Association for the Advancement of Science), what he thought about that. He thought for a few seconds and said “Yeah, that makes sense. You pump more energy into the system . . .”
And in the quarter century or so since then, I have heard people use that same description. It’s not that the temperature of St Louis will rise in a straight line. It’s that there is more energy / heat in the overall system. Which screws up not only temperature readings, but precipitation, insect life, bird migrations, glaciers, growing seasons, and all sorts of other things that aren’t always put together in the mix.
Plus –(and this one was an eye-opener to me)– the idea is GLOBAL Warming. The globe. Not just the US.
Global area = 196.9 million square miles. (three-quarters water)
Area of US = 3.8 million square miles
The US is about 2% of the surface of the earth.
The East Coast is even less than that.
OTOH, it’s going to be below zero in St Louis on New Year’s Eve, and that sucks.
Oh no. Very sad. There was a recent documentary about her life I think. Or a memoir (I am posting quickly here during my commute).

It seems like nearly every year, some overconfident dude goes up in the winter and doesn’t come back down alive.
It’s really a cosmic injustice that this imbecile and the majority of people who voted for him will be worm food well before the real crisis in climate happens. Then again, maybe when we’re fucking rid of all of them (can’t happen soon enough), we can do something about the problem.
It seems like nearly every year, some overconfident dude goes up in the winter and doesn’t come back down alive.

Um… yes. He is trolling. That’s quite deliberate.
Now, I do like the “I can’t wait for stupid people…” followed by Trump, because, Trump is QED. But when people counsel not reacting to Trump’s outrages, this is precisely the kind you don’t want to respond to, to maintain maximal stability, and avoid pointless energy waste. I hope everyone here recognizes that climate change is a right-wing shibboleth… in the 00s, there were still some Republicans who accepted it, and the right wing decided to make it a litmus test, because
1) it draws a distinct line, and
2) you know you won’t draw in liberals, and most importantly,
3) it helps the rich-now. No one cares if the wealth they hold now is utterly destroyed in 50 years – they’ll be dead by then (or holed up in a relatively safer, relatively more comfortable, position).
So: Trump is just being a troll, quite literally; he’s not even informed enough to have a dumbass opinion. Don’t get mad.
Pointing out that he’s a Republican stooge, and wow, those rubes really eat it up… that might be interesting. But anger won’t help one way or the other.
Most classical music stations think classical music ended around 1925. Unfortunately. There was an incredible variety of music in the last century. I’ve heard too damn much Mozart in the first 62 years of my life. I’ll take all the Shostakovich, Bartok, Prokofiev, Lutoslawski, Poulenc, Hindemith, Copland, and Adams you got.

@Jager: Trump doesn’t consider California part of the nation; we didn’t vote for him, so we’re sort of like Puerto Rico.

I’m so tired the the President trolling us.

@M. Bouffant:
Well, that’s a near-certainty, right there.

Remember, we are talking about a man who has praise sessions where people must tell him how wonderful he is.

@dr. bloor: It will stay underwater permanently but by that time this POS president will be dead.

Oh no. Very sad. There was a recent documentary about her life I think. Or a memoir (I am posting quickly here during my commute).
She spoke briefly by phone during a discussion of her life on public radio station KPCC. She was a star very early on was known as Baby Rose Marie, and one of the first stars not be need a last name for everyone to know who she was.
Much more to her story than being a supporting character on the Dick Vandyke Show.

@mai naem mobile: Did that the week after the prez election. 90.1 FM in Philadelphia. Helped me calm down.

@danielx: It has snowed at the top of Mt. Washington at least once in every month of the year. It’s an awesome place.
It seems like nearly every year, some overconfident dude goes up in the winter and doesn’t come back down alive.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Well, it is mid-summer in Antarctica.

It’s really a cosmic injustice that this imbecile and the majority of people who voted for him will be worm food well before the real crisis in climate happens. Then again, maybe when we’re fucking rid of all of them (can’t happen soon enough), we can do something about the problem.

@Gin & Tonic:
Not just winter. Morons seem to think that if it’s 70 and sunny at the base, then “how bad could it be at the summit?.”
The Darwin Awards should have a separate category for those numbskulls.

@Brachiator: More info on Rose Marie, including the documentary.

Thomas fire is almost out. The bad news is that the fiscal year isn’t halfway over yet, and CalFire has spent its entire budget.

Yes Donald, because it is very cold at your house for a few days, the entire notion that the earth [ie. the remaining 99.999999999% of the globe] is warming has been completely disproven.
Every freaking day Deadbeat Donald says something more ignorant and offensive than the previous day or week. There is no peak wing nut.
Emily68
That’s the most remarkable thing about global warming. Any cold snap can disprove it, but even the hottest heatwave ever can never reprove it.
