Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

This really is a full service blog.

So many bastards, so little time.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

When I was faster i was always behind.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Ric and Zooey have a mutual grooming session every morning. I’m looking forward to a friendlier New Year, although there is little reason to expect it.

@zhena gogolia: Twitter has pretty much sanctioned Sheriff Clarke’s violent rants against liberals and the media so it doesn’t feel like we’re going to get any friendliness from Trumpers. But that’s okay.

I like how he features a photo of John Wayne, his hero. I’ve seen interviews Wayne gave in the 1960s where it was obvious he didn’t think much of Black people.

@germy: Clarke doesn’t think much of Black people either which is why he allowed one to die of thirst in his prison (three other inmates have died under questionable circumstances) so Wayne is a perfect icon for him. To be a Conservative in this country, you must hate your own kind if you’re non-White and not straight. Or so it appears.

For folks who may be going to the movies, The Greatest Showman received mixed reviews, but is pleasing older audiences and families. From Forbes,

The Greatest Showman pulled off a trick worthy of a pioneering entertainer. The PT Barnum musical biopic had a soft-ish start last weekend, earning just $19 million over its six-day opening. But it’s been building since Christmas (as if folks were again waiting for after the holidays to check it out) and has earned a whopping $15.2m over its second Fri-Sun frame. That may not seem like much, but it’s a 73% jump over its $8.8m opening Fri-Sun frame.

And that, ladies and gents, is a record “hold” for a movie playing in over 3,000 theaters. Heck, it’s the best weekend hold ever for a movie on more than 2,000 screens where the opening weekend wasn’t one or two days (IE – when Christmas fell on a Saturday or Sunday). The family-friendly, but adult-centric razzle-dazzle entertainment is clearly clicking with families, women and folks who just like a good musical.

Previously I also recommended the new Jumanji movie, which has fun, action and a surprising amount of heart.

    @Brachiator:

That kind of box office increase is usually a sign that a movie people were a little iffy about is getting good word of mouth. People were going to skip it until a friend/family member saw it and said it was good.

I’m reading a WaPo story about cops shot in Colorado this morning, and get to this para:

The wounded officers are Mike Doyle, 28, Taylor Davis, 30, Jeff Pelle, 32, all of whom are sheriff’s deputies, and Tom O’Donnell, 41, an officer with the nearby Castle Rock Police Department. All are listed in stable condition, Spurlock said. The gunman shot two citizens during the shootout

All those police officers were non-citizens? Very inclusive of the respective departments. I hope they at least had green cards.

Or maybe something else was meant?

@Mary G: Clarke’s pinned tweet tells the tale: he’s drumming up business for his “enterprise” in hopes of parlaying his reputation as a flair-wearing Trump toady and fake internet tough guy into speaker fees. He’s no longer a sheriff, and the DHS gig didn’t work out, so…

because of course this happened (courtier-scribe Jonathan Swan of Axios)

Early this year, President Trump invited Mark Halperin to dinner in the White House residence. Seated around the table were Trump’s inner circle, including Jared Kushner, Hope Hicks, Stephen Miller, Kellyanne Conway, Steve Bannon, and Sean Spicer.
-They spent a rollicking evening reminiscing about the campaign, according to two sources in the room.
-Trump concluded the dinner by telling his team: “You guys all need to talk to him [Halperin]” for his campaign book — the third installment of “Game Change,” the most valuable franchise in political reporting.
-The team cooperated. In the months since, Halperin and his co-author John Heilemann used this extraordinary access to gather a treasure trove of reporting, the most comprehensive insider account of what happened on the campaign.
Several Trump campaign officials told me they gave their juiciest anecdotes to Halperin.

DH and I went out to Pizza Magherita for dinner (absolutely wonderful Morecambe Bay shrimp for my starter was bliss) we then wandered around town and ended up at Wetherspoons and decided that midnight was not going to happen (besides NFL was on TV for DH) so we got a Taxi home. I guess we will see in the New Year watching the Panthers :)

Just finished watching Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everyone Talking About Him)? on Amazon Prime. And glad I did.

Tender but oh so bittersweet documentary. To sum it up, a professional lifetime of concatenations too finite for his talent.

Practicing friendliness: giving a goat via Heifer International. Because goats are cool, and cheap, and it’s my take on “Feed the World,” and tomorrow’s my own kid’s birthday, and he already has everything. Taking $120 off the tax bill doesn’t hurt either.

Speaking of cats, I discovered that I somehow managed to lose a small piece of beef for tonight’s stew when I found it on the dining room carpet being gnawed on by one of our little obligate carnivores.

I took it away from her and gave her crunchy treats instead, which she seemed to find an acceptable substitute.
