Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Everybody saw this coming.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

We still have time to mess this up!

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Bark louder, little dog.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

    Well, maybe I can get a halfway decent night of sleep. What an insane three weeks!

    Just in case John wants to send this full article to his mom:

    NIGHTMARE DOESN’T END GEORGIA DREAMS

    “And that belief is what you must hang on to. The pain you feel … that’s how you know it’s working. That’s how you know you still care. We try to remove ourselves from pain, but it’s only through pain that we can find solace. The minute you lose that pain, you’ve lost everything. Hang onto it. You’re going to need it down the line. Someday, it’s going to fall right. Not tonight. But someday. When it happens, you’ll be glad tonight happened. You’ll be glad it hurt.“

    @WaterGirl:

    This loss, this brutal sadistic monster of a loss, snatched away from Georgia once, twice, three times, fates tugging the string again and again, is just about as difficult a way to lose a football game as you can possibly lose it. And that’s probably fitting, too. This season has been the Dream Season for Georgia in every imaginable way, from the meticulous, relentless crushing of its traditional rivals to the revenge on Auburn in the SEC championship game to the once-in-a-lifetime trips to South Bend and Pasadena to a College Football Playoff semifinal that is still ringing your ears. This season couldn’t end with a whimper, with a ritualistic slow Alabama suffocation. It had to explode. There was no other way. It had to end like this. It had to break your heart

    I’m not going to tell Cole to keep the doggie or not; that’s up to him. What heartens me is that one way or another, this particular beautiful doggie will surely find a 100% guaranteed loving home before Cole lets her out of his sight.

    And what breaks my heart is the millions and millions of doggies who are not that lucky.

    @Elizabelle: @MomSense: I know! I can’t believe we don’t get a vote on this.

    I say this as someone who visited a cocker spaniel puppy at the mall for 4 weeks. I had lost my cocker and was heart-broken and I cried the first time i saw him. He was such a sweet pup, I brought him toys and I would try to talk people into taking him home. I knew the fellow who cleaned the cages etc for this place at the mall, and he told me they were about to ship the pup around the region – one week at each store – and if he didn’t get placed they were going to put him down.

    I HATE mall pet stores and I didn’t want them to make a profit, so I told the store that I would take him that day if I could get him at half price. They said okay, and when I told one of my vet friends at the vet school (I worked there) that I had brought him home, he said FINALLY! i can’t believe it took you so long; I knew from the very first day.

    Four fucking weeks i went to visit that dog – I wish someone had just told me on day one. I feel bad that he spent 4 months of puppyhood stuck in a cage.

    @Amir Khalid: I can’t believe that John would give away Lily’s BFF. He kept Rosie and Thurston and they aren’t exactly congenial to Lily’s taste but Yuri is her BFF. They cuddle and share lap time with John. I’m not seeing him giving her away and then facing Lily’s disappointment and sighs over losing her friend and keeping the other two. I’m guessing that John just hasn’t thought through how Lily is going to feel until it’s too late. Having John dognap Yuri so Lily quits sighing and looking for her is a possibility we should consider.

    @Jim, Foolish Literalist: He was slapped down by the SCOTUS on this earlier (on procedural grounds), but he seems to be trying his best to throw roadblocks up in Donnie and Jeffie’s way (from December 20) – WARNING Autoplay video:

    Alsup is considering five lawsuits seeking to block President Donald Trump from rescinding DACA, which has protected about 800,000 people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children or came with families who overstayed visas. He also is considering a government request to dismiss the suits.

    He did not immediately issue a ruling Wednesday.

    People took out loans, enrolled in school and even made decisions about whether to get married and start families on the basis of DACA and now face “horrific” consequences from the loss of the program, said Jeffrey Davidson, an attorney for the governing board of the University of California school system, which sued.

    “The government considered none of this at all when they decided to rescind DACA,” he said.

    Alsup questioned whether the administration had conducted a thorough review before ending the program.

    Brad Rosenberg, a Justice Department attorney, said the administration considered the effects of ending DACA and decided to phase it out over time instead of cutting it immediately.

    DACA recipients will be allowed to stay in the U.S. for the remainder of their two-year authorizations. Any recipient whose status was due to expire within six months also got a month to apply for another two-year term.

    Rosenberg said DACA was always a temporary measure and never extended any guarantees about its benefits.

    “Perhaps it is worthwhile for Congress to consider the benefits of providing some form of relief to these individuals,” he said.

    The Justice Department said in court documents that DACA was facing the possibility of an abrupt end by court order, but Alsup was critical of that argument.

    The program includes hundreds of thousands of college-age students commonly referred to as “dreamers,” based on never-passed proposals in Congress called the DREAM Act that would have provided similar protections for young immigrants.

    U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in September that DACA would be phased out, saying Obama had exceeded his authority when he implemented it in 2012.

    The move sparked a flurry of lawsuits in different federal courts across the country, including one in New York filed by 15 states and the District of Columbia.

    Alsup is considering five different lawsuits, including one brought by California and three other states and another by the governing board of the University of California school system.

    “Today we continued our work in court to make sure Dreamers can continue to contribute to America,” California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement after the hearing. “We will fight for them with every tool we have.”

    Alsup had ordered the Trump administration to turn over all emails, letters and other documents it considered in its decision to end DACA, but the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday tossed out his ruling.

    The justices said the lower court must consider other issues before tackling whether officials must release the documents. The high court said its move wasn’t an indication of its views on the merits of either side.

    It sounds like he made a good ruling today. Here’s hoping it’s upheld.

    But Congress needs to act and take the issue away from Donnie and Jeffie.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

    All true about Arpaio, granted. Even if he won, the Senate may have some arcane rule about refusing to seat a convicted felon. Not that he could be much worse than some of the other human-shaped piles of waste currently seated in the World’s Greatest Deliberative Body.

    One can only hope (piously) that something interferes with Arpaio’s Progress. Although some would argue that an 85 year old wingnut racist would fit right into the Republican caucus. Not me, you understand, but some people.

    John, that dog is home. Lily loves her. You can’t send her away and upset Lily. And you got her a lambie blanket. She has to stay with her bestest friend Lily and her new lambie blanket!

    @danielx:
    When der Scheißgibbon pardoned Arpaio, Arpaio tried to get his conviction voided, didn’t he? His laughable argument was that the pardon meant he didn’t do anything wrong in the first place. I’m sure that’s what he will claim during his campaign.

    @Amir Khalid: Won’t he have to get through a primary? I find it hard to believe he will win the statewide primary. He’s over 80, a convicted (pardoned) felon, and lost his last election. I know Arizona is full of wingnuts, but even for them all of that adds up to a bad candidate.

    @Yarrow: I’ve seen people say it will be good for McSally, since the wing nut vote will be split between Kelli Ward and Arpaio, but maybe for the general all the wound up wingers will be disappointed with McSally and stay home.

    @Jim, Foolish Literalist: I’m seeing the same thing. I guess we’ll just have to see how things play out. With all the Trump Russia news breaking on an almost daily basis, who knows where we’ll be by the time November rolls around.

    @GregB: That made me laugh. I have a feeling you’re right. It’s the kind of place washed up political operatives end up–on “conservative cruises” where rubes pay to hear them talk.

    @SiubhanDuinne: Last I saw it was a tsunami advisory, which is a step less serious than a warning. Has it been upgraded?

    @SiubhanDuinne:

    Revised reports say quake downgraded to 7.6 and tsunami warnings lifted, so perhaps not as dire as original reports suggested. Still, it is a reminder of how vulnerable the area is, especially with a compromised — in some cases almost nonexistent — infrastructure.

    @SiubhanDuinne: My mom lives outside STL and she is saying that the area is hard hit with the flu. The biggest worry for the hospitals is a possible shortage of IV bags. The short sighted racist in the WH may have hurt more of his constituents than he realized when he didn’t rebuild Puerto Rico.
