Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

This blog will pay for itself.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Nothing worth doing is easy.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

For all the focus on Trump, the fundamental issue is that Ryan & McConnell are letting Cotton & Goodlatte drive the immigration legislation process rather than letting a bipartisan deal get made.

— Matthew Yglesias (@mattyglesias) January 13, 2018

.

Never stop reminding people: Trump is not an “aberration”; Trump is every Republican when the rest of us aren’t in the room. Their only problem with Trump is that he neglects to use his inside voice when the cameras are rolling.

Trump's shithole comments were 'unhelpful,' Paul Ryan said. But when Obama came out against Trump's Muslim ban, Ryan said he 'degraded the presidency' https://t.co/vowkanlUtG

Tom Cotton and David Perdue: Hear no evil

.@RandPaul tells me "You can't have an immigration compromise if everyone is out there calling the president a racist" #MTP

— Chuck Todd (@chucktodd) January 14, 2018

Not _everyone_ is calling him a racist. For instance, no Congressional Republicans are calling him a racist. https://t.co/Dyrl7QqtKd

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) January 14, 2018

Rand Paul, who said he would have opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, has decided to become Donald Trump's character witness on racism. Yeah, everything is fine now.

— Joy Reid (@JoyAnnReid) January 14, 2018

On @FaceTheNation, @SenTomCotton says he "didn't hear" Trump using reported slur. He said previously that he did not recall. I am learning so much about the human brain and ears this morning!

— Ali Rogin (@AliABCNews) January 14, 2018

David Perdue—who said in a statement Friday he didn’t recall if Trump said “shithole countries”—changes his story today on @ThisWeekABC and says Trump “did not use that word.”

— Sahil Kapur (@sahilkapur) January 14, 2018

The senator from Kentucky thinks racism isn't worth talking about and the senators from Arkansas and Georgia don't even notice it. Stay on brand, Dixie.

DHS Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen was in the room, but says can't recall whether Trump made "shithole countries" remark pic.twitter.com/lLbijwmlep

Benchmark /reality check: Almost 40 yrs later, I can remember specific colorful phrases / moments from a president in the Oval Office.

That you “wouldn’t recall” a term like “shithole" 3 days later is … flatly not believable, for anyone of normal sentience.
NB: Sen. Cotton https://t.co/5pn3ThOsgz

Sen. @JeffFlake tells @GStephanopoulos he heard directly from participants in that Oval Office meeting “those words were used” by President Trump, “before those words went public.” pic.twitter.com/5HdhXSKfAx

Even the Wingnut Welfare Wurlitzers are giving these dudes side-eye!

It’s weird that people in the room don’t remember Trump using that word when Trump himself was calling friends to brag about it afterwards. I spoke to one of those friends. The President thought it would play well with the base.

— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) January 14, 2018

“I don’t recall” is just the coward’s way of avoiding the perils of crossing Trump or his base. If he didn’t say it and Durbin claimed otherwise, they’d remember it and call Durbin a liar. https://t.co/DtSWmJ6V8t

if there’s an under-reported aspect to this story, it’s those two shitbirds being called over to rile up racist grampa before Graham and Durbin got there

For me, this is another of those uncrossable chasms. Anyone who thinks that the problem with what Trump said was that he used a naughty word and not that he said we should not permit immigration from those countries is someone who has voluntarily surrendered any moral authority. Period.

And just so everyone is clear, Ryan said that _Obama_ degraded the Presidency by speaking out against Trumps’s proposed Muslim ban.

Hypothetical question: What would it take to get the political media to stop taking Ryan’s pretenses towards policy aptitude seriously?

I assume that it was Senator Durbin who leaked what Trump said about African countries and Haiti during that meeting since it’s obvious that Republicans have no problem with racism and their racist President. Good on Durbin for not letting another example of Trump’s racism stay private. Trump should figure out by now that nothing is private when you’re Commander-in-Chief. He should have stayed a private citizen if he valued his privacy so much.

So, Congress has five days to pass a spending bill or the government shuts down. Democrats want a fix to the Trump-created DACA mess to be part of that. The nativist wing of the GOP really hates brown people, and the Paul Ryan types either secretly agree with them or are too afraid of them to say no. And with Trump basically pulling down his pants and mooning the country with his shithole comment, he’s not exactly Mr. Dealmaker right now. This week is going to be …interesting.

Tangentially related to all this, because it was inspired by Trump’s comments. everybody might benefit from reading the latest posting from Penzeys. It is long, so I won’t put down too much of it. This particular paragraph stands out.

In this year that marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. King being taken from us, the time’s come to change who pays for racism. In many ways racism in America is played like a game of schoolyard keep away. No one group is by itself entirely responsible, but each has its roll in keeping the game alive.

There are the flat-out white supremacists. This group leads the way, but by itself has minimal impact because their message is so outside everything America values. Next there are the politicians who usually speak in what’s called dog whistles, words the supremacists know show support for their beliefs, but to others just sounds like normal speech. And then there are the voters who vote for these politicians knowing full well they are saying what the supremacists need to hear, but pretending there is some other more important issue, like doing with your emails the exact same thing previous Secretaries of State had done with their emails.

    Read it all. https://www.facebook.com/Penzeys/posts/10156190057307834:0

Unbelievable. The Saints lost the divisional-round playoff game to Minnesota on a play that was almost as unthinkable as Brett Favre’s interception that allowed the Saints to beat this team in the NFC title game eight years ago. A 61-yard TD pass to Stefon Diggs after rookie safety Marcus Williams lowered his shoulder to try and tackle him and completely whiffed — actually hitting CB Ken Crawley instead. Vikings win 29-24. Saints season ends.

It’s funny what ends up defining them. Trump has said thousands of offensive, mean spirited things over his lifetime as a loud mouth celebrity conman and “shithole” somehow sticks. It’s a mysterious and arbitrary thing. I tend to think it’s not “A” word but instead more of a pile of shit that becomes too big and smelly to ignore. Each one makes you more likely to believe the next. No one ever says “Donald Trump!? HE said that?” like they would with Obama. Of course he did. Completely consistent with everything else he says and does.

Trump didn’t even have one of those set campaign pieces where someone comes out and says what a great guy he is- “he gave me my first job, he lent me money when my ma was sick, let me tell you this chopped down the cherry tree story that shows his honestly”. Because he’s never done anything like that. NO ONE over 70 years on the planet other than his children, who all work for him and never had another job.

On the other, Republicans have degraded the national discourse so completely, so blatantly, and so assiduously over the past 3 decades that it almost seems plausible that it wouldn’t register as something colorful, or even worth committing to memory, for a Republican President to go on an 3 hour long rant stringing together obscenities, vulgarities, profanities, and racial slurs.

    @schrodingers_cat:

I don’t assume that Kelly wanted to keep Cotton (or Goodlatte) out. At this point I think it is probable that Kelly supports Trump’s racist agenda, or maybe some tunnel-vision “we’re just enforcing current law” subset of it that allows him to face himself in the mirror each morning. What I meant is that his gatekeeping and schedule-minding look awfully weak if a single White House aide can rejigger a top-level meeting so as to take some attendees by surprise about participants and agenda.

    New York Post:

President Trump’s senior adviser Stephen Miller orchestrated the Thursday confrontation in the White House in which the president objected to immigrants from “shithole countries,” The Hill reported.

Calling the maneuver “the Stephen Miller ambush,” a senior Democratic aide said Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham were blindsided when they arrived for what they thought would be a private confab with Trump.

Instead, they found themselves at a debate with immigration hawks.

“Graham and Durbin expect to have a meeting, they show up and there’s this anti-immigrant cast of characters there,” the Democratic aide said. “And that was obviously designed by Stephen Miller to try to kill the deal.”

The two senators found themselves defending their proposal against criticism from GOP Sens. Tom Cotton, Bob Goodlatte and David Perdue and others who opposed their plan for its lack of stringent enforcement measures.

“Stephen Miller is feeling empowered and is apparently running the White House in terms of immigration policy,” the Democratic aide moaned.

Even if Kelly fully supports the anti-immigration agenda, I wonder if, as a (former) career military officer with decades of command experience, he ever has a twinge of concern about a 32-year-old zealot stage-managing national policy with no apparent oversight?

Kelly came in as chief of staff to bring order out of chaos. Regardless of his political views, the “shithole” meeting setup was the opposite of orderly. And a return to chaos in the Oval Office has the potential to trigger much bigger problems than the president using coarse language to articulate his racist policies.

@Hercule Triathlon: It isn’t that Jeane Kirkpatrick’s gate test is wrong. Rather her taste just doesn’t matter. The people who are willing to risk everything to get here from the places you’d put the gates around are exactly the people we want. Risk takers. Unafraid to leave everything behind to try for something better. Very few of any American’s ancestors came to the US from places that wouldn’t have been described as shitholes when they came here. And very few of any American’s ancestors were wealthy or well off when they got here. The vast majority have risked big and the reward was becoming an American.

I’ve served with some of these folks, as have a couple of dozen other people who regularly comment here. I’ve seen the risks they’re willing to take back in their homelands of Iraq and Afghanistan where they have to operate outside the wire not just in ACUs and kevlar and IBAs/IBVs and 80 to 125 lbs of extra crap strapped to them, but also wearing full face balaclavas just in case someone they know might see their faces, which would place the family they left behind at risk.

Think how much of Presidential analysis is parsing their words. That doesn’t mean anything now. It’ll be a big lift to get it back up there. @? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?: To answer your substantive question: yes it does. Apparently the issue is that mutants basically weird everyone out as they’re a different type of human as a result of evolution (homo superior) while mutates like Spider-man or demigods like Thor or other humans enhanced through scientific research and/or accidents (Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk, She-Hulk, etc) are just every day humans who have been enhanced. So no threat to homo sapiens. For practical purposes in the actual comics, the various X-Men didn’t actually interact a lot with non-mutant heroes. Sure, the Beast did join the Avengers for a while. And there’s a WW II backstory where Logan/Wolverine fighting for the Canadian Army and Captain America had some interactions. But by and large even though they were in the same continuity and the same world, so to speak, they didn’t really interact a lot. As big crossovers became a thing, the interactions became more and more frequent.

I worked for a decade in a company that produced an 80 page membership magazine monthly and the people there all had journalist degrees. It still required a managing editor to make the 5 writers output into a common direction magazine. None of them were dumb, stupid or uneducated but there still needed to be a controlling hand at the helm. I don’t see that hand at newspapers. I believe they are seen as unnecessary and too costly.

    I’ve punched cards, with PL/1 programs on them. Little ones like Print “Hello World”;

My first semester in Computer Science 100 there were something like 200 students, and 4 on-line terminals, so long lines waiting. Around the rest of the room were punch-card machines, and a fellow I became good friends with was a former IBM field tech who repaired them. He showed me a little bit, and we were in business, no waiting.

I was astounded that no one else joined us. At least we were sitting there doing programming assignments, while they were chatting and waiting.

Another good friend worked summers at a big computer shop, helping operators run jobs, putting paper in printers, etc. One programmer brought a bigger and bigger card deck every few days. (The cards were not numbered or marked on their sides.) One day he dropped his program card deck on the floor, and never came back.

@? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?:

To be fair, historically, everyone in the MU was pretty scared of the Hulk, because he was impossibly strong, indestructible, and had the mind of a toddler perpetually in mid-tantrum. You never knew when, one day, Bruce Banner would come to town, stub his toe, and destroy everything within a fifty-mile radius.

It was the Fantastic Four and the Avengers that everyone irrationally liked, mainly because they were all rich and mostly white (and even the Black Panther was a highly educated billionaire). It always amused me that the X-Men had work so hard to hide themselves while the Avengers and the FF had government permission to fly jets and rockets out of the middle of downtown Manhattan. I think it helped the Avengers that they quickly ditched the Hulk and picked up Captain America who (within the setting) was literally a universally admired living legend. Even then, it was a major storyline when most of the original Avengers left and were replaced with a lineup of Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Hawkeye (the last three of whom had criminal records). The in-universe media called them “Cap’s Kooky Quartet,” which for a time flirted with the whole “unpopular superheroes” concept.

    Richard Nixon: Evil.

I think that works better than “See, no evil”. But YMMV.

I’ve found the Paint.net graphics program – http://www.getpaint.net for free download – was definitely worth the money ;-) and would suggest Ms. RedDirtGirl take a look at it.

My high school history teacher told us, waybackwhen, that “The Anglo-Saxons are a great people, and have given much to the world. But they don’t know beans about cooking. Fortunately, the USA has had immigrants from all over, from the Germans who brought the ground meat concoctions of Hamburg and Frankfurt, to…”

I’ve lived in the Ironbound section of Newark, probably the largest neighborhood of Brazilian and Portuguese immigrants in the US. It’s clean, safe, lots of good food stores and restaurants, and if you walk down Ferry Avenue – the main street of Lusophone North America – there is an establishment every block saying ‘Aprenda Inglese’. If that’s Brazilian culture, bring it on.

When I’m working at the polls, later this year, I shall go to the Brazilian barbecue place at the corner, and say, licking my lips, “Hercule, you know not what you’re missing, speak of what you know nought of, and sound like a fool.”
