Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Fani Willis claps back at Trump chihuahua, Jim Jordan.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

This fight is for everything.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

I forgot to re-register the domain name so we were down for a spell. We’re back live and good for five years (if blogs and the internet even exist then- we need some new blood, an influx of young kids to come shake things up in the comments and rouse us old farts). To make up for this, an adorable picture of Steve after I have tucked him into the bed he made out of blankets on the couch:

Such a good boy.

    Steve!

Yeah, some new blood would be good, but be careful what you wish for. Suspect some of the issue is current events are upsetting enough that some peeps just avoid news as much as possible, and also less blog commenting. Who knows, though? All could turn around.

Waiting for my appointment, I was listening to a Fleetwood Mac compilation yesterday on a discman at the hospital. (Discmans, for the benefit of any whippersnappers present, were a type of portable audio device pioneered by Sony that played CDs — in those days, you couldn’t buy digital music on the Internet in soft copy, so it was recorded on these discs. This tech is so old it predates even iPods.) I heard Silver Springs, and was once again amazed that a song of such emotional power, surely among the best of the Rumours sessions, was left out of the album’s initial LP release.

Since this is a pet-related thread, I will repeat G’s stressful story from earlier. He was supposed to get our middle cat Annie packed up and meet me at the vet for her appointment, but he had to give up after an hour since she both pooped in the carrier just as he was shoving her in AND drew enough blood that there’s a stain on the couch.

Needless to say, we rescheduled the appointment.

@Amir Khalid: Silver Springs. Excellent song. Saw Stevie Nicks in concert last fall in St. Paul, MN. She looked Picture of Dorian Grey young, and still in great voice. Told a lot of stories, forget which song was a response to Prince’s “When Doves Cry” (plus some photos of him; hometown boy and will always be missed). Also stories about songwriting with Tom Petty, and what a marvelous friend he was. Poignant, then and now.

Stevie Nicks has such a good song catalogue, never mind Fleetwood Mac. I forget what a good songwriter she is.

It has actually warmed up a tiny bit here tonight. When I went to bed it was only 2 and now 4 hours later it is already up to – wait for it – 4 degrees.

Let the cat out, who really wanted out, for about 5 minutes. She was desperately hanging on the door by then, when I looked at the front door, and let her back in. She tore around thumping as she ran around the room, I guess to exercise inside to warm up. I suspect when I go back to bed she will join me to warm up yet more.

Samwise has an interesting face shape for a cat. Of course part of that could be his hair style on his head…. but I prefer to think of it as a sign of his ancient wisdom. What a nice looking kitty.

FWIW, here is the WaPost article on the FTF Vichy NYTimes’ decision to give their letters page to Trump supporters, so that we can learn from them. Despite the FTF V NYTimes’ editorial board’s very strong crusading AGAINST Trump. Which somehow does not make it into their headlines, political coverage, or its press corpse’s most earnest fellating.

    Arts and Entertainment
The New York Times gives its editorial page over to Trump supporters, sparking a debate

A debate. Because controversy! Sells! Policy and realism is boring. We might lose advertisers.

Kudos to the WaPost — I kind of love they put this under “Arts and Entertainment.” I guess it’s a media column, but it belongs under “infotainment.”

Steve is a very good bo, John Cole. That picture of him just makes me happy.
@fuckwit: We had a Maine coon who slept on his back, his belly exposed to the sky in the middle of our back yard. Granted, there was a wall around that garden, but still. I’m sure the smallish hawk that I caught eyeing my rabbits considered him for a moment or two before deciding that if the rabbits were too big for her, then Tommy certainly was.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Ugh! Here I am rediscovering something I knew a long time ago but forgot because it didn’t affect us, that not all doctors accept Medicare. I really miss Kaiser because of the way it functioned; tests, treatment, doctors, pharmacy, hospital, everything provided by them so there was none of this running around trying to get our damned insurance company to pay for the part of the bill that Medicare didn’t cover, and not having to deal with fifteen separate companies was a bonus..

It’s raining like mad here, very noisy. 47 degrees at 1:30am. We got two days of winter in Seattle and this just seems like Spring. The high was 61 on Monday.

Politico’s editor in chief, John Harris, was BriWi’s guest, and he said something so breathtakingly stupid that I not only wondered how he functions in his editorial role but found it remarkable that he can remember to alternate legs when taking steps so he doesn’t fall on his face.

Harris said the difference between Bill Clinton’s and Trump’s approach to the media as POTUS is that Clinton cared what the NYT said and Trump doesn’t. I hope Harris has caregivers to pin a note with his name and address on his jacket when he leaves the house. And someone to protect his bank account from Nigerian princes.
