Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Republicans in disarray!

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Second rate reporter says what?

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Watched half of Womwood while sitting with landlady at auto shop for 3 hours earlier today, waiting for a duplicate key and fob for her vehicle.. Not disappointed except that tighter editing and fewer split screen sequences (and similar visual frippery) could easily have brought it down from a six-episode mini-series to four.

Been a busy evening as i continue to plan my trip to LA…getting the plausible itenary down for the two main days with no scheduled activities is taking a bit more jan i expected, but i’ve got a good basic lost of what i want to see, the duration i want to be at each sit/attraction and the time on public transportation. the only thing now is to get everything to fit within the budget I’ve set for myself.

So far nothing big or major to snag…to worry about… well except just happened to find out that the Black Panther premiere is supposed to take place on the Monday of my LA Trip. So, if i don’t have my Will & Grace tickets. I could get there early enough and actually be in the crowd that stands around (or across the street) as the stars hit the red carpet at the premiere at the very least maybe some great pics!!!

Wife has directed me to start the logistical planning for a mini-vacation (four nights) on Nantucket in late September. Going to a wedding for folks who actually live in Australia, but the mother of the groom owns property there. Sharing a cottage with several people. Never been there, but did a quick trip to Martha’s Vineyard while still in high school circa 1970. Google will be our friend. We’ll fly into Boston or Providence and rent a car to reach Hyannis, then play it by ear…

Singer Neil Diamond has announced he will retire from touring, after a recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.

Diamond, who turns 77 on Wednesday, cancelled his March tour dates for Australia and New Zealand on medical advice.

The Solitary Man singer was midway through his 50th anniversary tour.

In a statement he said he took the decision “with great reluctance and disappointment”.

“I have been so honoured to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years,” he said.

@B.B.A.: Deathspell Omega ((mostly) French avant-garde/black metal band; the vocalist is probably Finnish and some sources have claimed the bassist is Japanese, but no one really knows for certain) is the only example I can think of where I’m 100% convinced of their sincerity. They’re also extraordinarily reclusive, to the point where no one is really entirely certain who they are, but the one interview I’m aware of shows that they are (1) quite sincere, (2) very intelligent, and (3) absolutely barking mad. Oddly, they also come across as surprisingly respectful of Christianity (they’re one of at most a handful of metal bands I’ve ever heard that actually engages with the religion in full, rather than just attacking a caricature of it, and it’s extremely obvious that they’ve spent decades making a detailed study of it). Bandcamp here, but as they play black metal, their music is most assuredly not for the faint of heart.

Apart from that, I suspect most of them are at least as concerned with tweaking the noses religious folk as they are with any actual religious beliefs they may or may not have. Which isn’t to say there probably aren’t some others with religious beliefs, but I think most are just impressively dedicated trolls.

This is what I was yammering about earlier today, an excerpt from WaPo:
“In their effort to continue dismantling Obamacare, the Republican continuing resolution does not include funding for community clinics and private hospitals that care for large numbers of low-income patients,” Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) told me. The impact of this budgetary slight was made plain by one of her constituents in an email she shared with me.

Wanted to touch base about CR that doesn’t include health Center funding. St. John’s will lose 10% of our budget ($8.4 million a year). We’ll have to close 6 of our 15 clinics in your district.

It’s also self defeating to fund CHIP but not health centers since most kids with CHIP receive their care at community health centers. So they may have CHIP but they won’t be able to access services because their Health Center is closed.

@opiejeanne: The bigger problem is that a lot of Congressional Republicans are just fine if everything that wasn’t explicitly for the betterment of the Masters of the Universe and the MIC were to wither and die; and apparently their voters are just fine with it too.

There are a lot of perverse incentives for Republicans letting everything tank and it makes having an honest negotiation effectively impossible. I wouldn’t be surprised if Democrats staged a walk-out at some point to TRY and get someone outside of our ‘bubble’ to realize that the reason why the federal government is having problems is due to active sabotage and not because of some nebulous inability for the two sides to come to an agreement.

@BlueDWarrior: They think they’re clever with this “funding” CHIP without actually funding the clinics. I hope this blows up BIG for them. WaPo was quoting someone from a hospital in Los Angeles, unless I’m mistaken. The population there is large enough to cause a lot of noise.

Out for a spell; catch you jackals later. Gonna stay off the intertubes and all the derision against Democrats and their deal. Let’s see what happens in 3-4 weeks. Sick of the press corpse. They should take a bus. As if.

Incidentally: why was this coyote on the bus? Did we ever find out?

@Elizabelle: Early on in the thread somebody linked to the video. He was just minding his own business eating trash at a remote train stop. A train pulled up, its door opened and he wandered in to check it out. The doors slammed, and he was trapped in it for a miles long train ride into the city. When the doors finally opened he ran off, miles from home and in the city.

Do not ever touch a wild canine. They sometimes carry a disease on their fur both deadly and so gross and nightmare fuel I will not describe it here.

    @opiejeanne:
They just had to slip in a budget detail so small no one would notice it until too late, with no purpose but to fuck poor people over. Republicans are such assholes. At least it will be addressed in the Feb 8th bill.

    @BlueDWarrior:
A lot of Republican voters are not only just fine with it, they demand it. It’s a friggin’ death cult, determined to kill as many people as possible until whites are the only ones left.
