Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

We still have time to mess this up!

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Bark louder, little dog.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Everybody saw this coming.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Trump’s First (Last?) SotU: Early Reviews

by Anne Laurie|  January 31, 20182:02 am| 47 Comments

This post is in: Hail to the Hairpiece, Open Threads, Republican Stupidity, Assholes, Ever Get The Feeling You've Been Cheated?, Not Normal

FacebookTweetEmail

Many thanks to Adam for posting the livestream!

I got called away from the computer, but I did follow the final two-thirds on the Guardian‘s excellent-as-always livestream, with facts and commentary:

Guess which line of those below was a Trump improvisation?

America has also finally turned the page on decades of unfair trade deals that sacrificed our prosperity and shipped away our companies, our jobs, and our wealth.

The nations has lost its wealth but we’re getting it back so fast.

The era of economic surrender is over. From now on, we expect trading relationships to be fair and more importantly reciprocal.

My opinion of the speech and the speecherator: Low energy. No stamina. SAD!

Just look at the reactions right on this here blog. Used to be, we could get three, four massive fast-moving threads out of a single nationally-televised Preznidential speech. Tonight, we didn’t even break a TBogg unit (500+ comments). Not once did the livestream overload my crappy old laptop didn’t even overload, until it came to young Kennedy’s rebuttal!

At least we can take some consolation in knowing that Trump is now — or will be once the tranqs wear off — scouring every available source looking for a metric that will let him tweet that *his* speech was totally more popular than You Know Who’s…
.

America welcomes Trump to his State Of The Union by flipping him off. pic.twitter.com/mF6tLJgPp2

— Sarah Reese Jones (@PoliticusSarah) January 31, 2018

The state of the union is that we have a president who has refused to release his taxes, has almost certainly laundered money for Russians, and Republicans won’t do anything about it because they are cowards &/or co-conspirators

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) January 31, 2018

Also from the Guardian:

Twitter says tonight’s speech was “the most-tweeted #SOTU or #JointSession address ever, passing last year’s record of 3m tweets.”

Perfect. Trump’s devolved past “soundbite president” into “140 character president”. Can’t even muster the energy to deliver a decent quip on-camera.

As Trump said "we sought to restore the bonds of trust between our citizens and our government," one Democrat very audibly said "Oh Jesus."

— Ben Jacobs (@Bencjacobs) January 31, 2018

So Trump is calling for national unity by reminding us of how he spent the fall feuding with NFL players

— James Poniewozik (@poniewozik) January 31, 2018

"Why we proudly stand for the national anthem."

We can hear the dog whistle from over here. #TakeAKnee

— ACLU (@ACLU) January 31, 2018

Trump cites the passage of "the largest tax reform in history".

Repubs go absolutely wild… except Mitch McConnell who sat there looking like he seriously just became the living figure of Montgomery Burns.

You have to find the shot.

All that was missing was the "exxxxcellent"

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) January 31, 2018

Wow. Rumble of booing over his lie about "unlimited" chain. Anyone remember booing before at a #SOTU?

— Shadow Cabinet (@ShadowingTrump) January 31, 2018

When Trump just called for the end of chain migration, Dem Reps. heard groaning and “that’s not true” coming from the floor

— Joe Perticone (@JoePerticone) January 31, 2018

Pelosi just signaled to her members to quiet down as they boo and hiss Trump's remarks on immigration

— Emma Dumain (@Emma_Dumain) January 31, 2018

The fact that Trump isn’t piping The Rains of Castamere into the chamber during the DACA portion of the speech really shows a lack of imagination.

— Sonny Bunch (@SonnyBunch) January 31, 2018

"We have cut more regulations in our first year than any administration in history."

Aging Republicans applaud as if someone had just discovered a way to add Viagra to congressional tap water.

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) January 31, 2018

You know who else was targeted for death by Latin American organized crime? Judge Curiel, who Trump dismissed as a Mexican.

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) January 31, 2018

Paul Ryan’s wry smile while clapping for paid family leave legislation that he knows perfectly well isn’t going to be introduced is really the Trump era in a nutshell.

— Matthew Yglesias (@mattyglesias) January 31, 2018

The person responsible for making this speech more concise must have been busy testifying to a grand jury or at Klan rally or something

— Dan Pfeiffer (@danpfeiffer) January 31, 2018

Trump tells the people affected by natural disasters, specifically Puerto Rico, “We love you. We are with you”.
Tomorrow, FEMA officially shuts-off operations in Puerto Rico. https://t.co/xAhVZLpjwV

— Ana Navarro (@ananavarro) January 31, 2018

Joe Manchin stands and applauds for the "Motor City revving again." Debbie Stabenow looks up at him and says "what does that even mean?" Patty Murray, seated next to her: "I don't know."

Manchin keeps clapping.

— Matt Fuller (@MEPFuller) January 31, 2018

Trump asks Congress "to produce a bill that generates at least $1.5 trillion for the new infrastructure we need."

He said last year that he would "be asking Congress to approve legislation that produces a $1 trillion investment in infrastructure of the United States"

— Ben Jacobs (@Bencjacobs) January 31, 2018

Trump calling for $1.5 billion to fund infrastructure.

You just gave that money to the Koch Bros, you greedy, amoral f***stick.

Send them the bill.

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) January 31, 2018

As Trump talks about infrastructure, Joe Crowley holds out his hands with his thumbs rubbing against his index and middle fingers

— Ben Jacobs (@Bencjacobs) January 31, 2018

Wanting to keep sending prisoners to Guantanamo Bay just means you’re a terrified fucking bedwetter.

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) January 31, 2018

Anyone catch this? Melania Trump failed to stand with everyone else when Trump stated:

"In America we know that faith and Family, not government and bureaucracy are the the center of Democracy"#SOTU #StateofOurUnion pic.twitter.com/lrsuVdWD48

— Brian Krassenstein? (@krassenstein) January 31, 2018

I feel like this #SOTU is approaching a record for Skutniks

— Ben Jacobs (@Bencjacobs) January 31, 2018

Peak Skutnik.https://t.co/AxCwZ2tu7Qhttps://t.co/0mRJKWsIw8

— Kevin M. Kruse (@KevinMKruse) January 31, 2018

who are the "drug pushers" in this scenario? the Sacklers?

— Catherine Rampell (@crampell) January 31, 2018

Starting to feel like the last third of a karaoke rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody

— Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes) January 31, 2018

Now we have the forensic analysis of a speech that will be forgotten by the weekend, if not before.

— Jon Ralston (@RalstonReports) January 31, 2018

Pence and Ryan look like their special little boy just nailed his choir solo. pic.twitter.com/qjN039z6Us

— Schooley (@Rschooley) January 31, 2018

There was a lot of talk about President Trump delivering an uplifting speech

There might be lofty rhetoric — but make no mistake the frame is one that subtly (and sometimes not-so-subtly) inflames the cultural divide between Trump’s America and the America that disdains him

— Kasie Hunt (@kasie) January 31, 2018

Trump's key allies liked it… https://t.co/RCxSg7DAUW

— Grudge (@grudging1) January 31, 2018

The only part of that speech that mattered was the bloodthirsty birth of a nation section on immigration. Rest will be forgotten by thursday

— Zeddy (@Zeddary) January 31, 2018

Bipartisan proposal to bring the country together: SOTU speeches should be 18 mins max

What he also failed to mention is that some of the corporations that have given out bonuses, such as Walmart, AT&T, General Electric, and Pfizer, are also laying off tens of thousands of their employees. Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Kleenex and Huggies, recently said they were using money from the tax cut to restructure — laying off more than 5,000 workers and closing 10 plants.

I mean look how he’s praised because he actually was able to read a teleprompter and stay mostly on message, that he didn’t have much if anything to do with creating.

well, with this onslaught on the norms of how a President is supposed to act and behave and the considerable lack of disdain that the GOP has for the nation and its traditions, just hoping like hell we get to vote in 2018.

and if we do take back the House and the Senate, I very much want those elected to roll back all of this treasonous shit and restore our nation to what can be considered a government in good faith.

If this happens, I fully expect Nancy Smash to be working in the wings for a whole boatload of items to be signed by our current office holder and this guy is such an idiot, I fully expect him to sign them.

In 2020, if we all live this long, I fully expect to see perp walks of all of these treasonous bastards, those who paid them, those who got paid and all of those that looked the other way.

I also expect Vlad to have a bullet in his brain pain by that summer.

It felt like the speech might have been set up to use for an extra purpose, creating segments for campaign ads.

Once their primaries of horrific cheering for themselves are over, all of a sudden they’ll be campaigning against the high disapproval of almost every voter group in the country.

So tonight they made usable blurbs of Republicans applauding people who aren’t wealthy white R men and women yet looked grateful. A baby saved from a bad womb, a Latina soldier I think, a heroic Asian, two AA families, an AA welder working in a small white family business, brave soldiers, a white policeman who listens to god, a Latino ICE, three families who’ve lived through evil and tragedy. They can replay the faces and emotions over and over by dropping one or two clips readymade into ads, and save on production costs and actors and contracts.
    Whatever.

His only accomplishment was that he resisted talking about himself as a god who owns resorts for a record length of time.

“And because I’m insanely proud of her, I’ve got to brag that my DiL has been asked by the Old Globe Theater in San Diego to give them a full length play – and they’re paying her for her submission, and a non-trivial amount. She had a short play on stage there a couple of years ago as part of their “New Voices” that year, so it wasn’t completely out of the blue, but they came to her. No guarantee it’ll be produced, but they’re paying well more than nominal.

Just found out this evening at “Christmas Dinner” with the kids. Got my happy mood back now just writing about it.”

    January 31, 2018 at 8:35 am

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Yup. Manchin is a vote for the Democratic Senate leadership. The Senate Majority Leader decides what gets done in the Senate. He can be infuriating when he goes outside the tent, but as you say one has to consider where he’s from. But what really matters is his vote at the start of the session for the Leader.

More Democrats opens up the possibility of the party and policies moving left (because you can then afford to lose votes).

I do wish people wouldn’t gripe about him so much. McConnell and Ryan and the rest of them are the enemy – not Manchin.

    Eyes on the prize.

Ever get the feeling that “You lie!” was actually groundwork for this moment? The US has not merely a post-truth pResidency but a counter-truth one; yet thanks to the eight years of consistent mischaracterization of BHO’s public statements, there are grounds for BSDIers to simply bewail the lack of honesty from Washington and shrug when Lord Dampnut’s egregious untruthfulness and gauche posturing come up in discussion.

    @DesertFriar:

Yeah, I don’t understand it either, and I’ve lived here most of my life, except for a couple of years college and some time in the Navy. People here are so easily conned out of their heritage. Taken advantage of by wealthy coal owners or auto dealership owners. Willing to spend public money to help a cheating businessman out of his own hole to “save jerbs”!!!

The mineral wealth of the state that was once owned by individual landowners was mostly bought by traveling landsmen trading treadle operated sewing machines and hunting rifles for a farmer’s mineral rights – millions or billions of dollars worth of coal, oil and gas for a $97 sewing machine for the wife and two rifles and brood sow for the husband.

The descendants of those farmers, now penniless in terms of real property, are desperate for jobs and willing to believe any Republican who tells them he will bring back the good coal jobs.

Example: Current Gov. Jimmy Justice, D R-Greenbrier Resort, coal man, “My Daddy was a Coal Man!”; a Republican all his life, the changed to win election as a Democrat, then changed back to Republican the first time Trump visited the state after being elected President.

So strange. When I was a kid it was so Democratic a state, as long as the UMWA represented the miners, until Reagan broke the NLRB and all the unions. Worst part of his presidency, breaking the unions.
