Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

White supremacy is terrorism.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

In my day, never was longer.

“woke” is the new caravan.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

He really is that stupid.

This fight is for everything.

Oh dear. https://t.co/9llvcM6n1t

— Rachel Maddow MSNBC (@maddow) March 2, 2018

… Shame if anything were to — happen — to it… “

… As part of the scrutiny of Kushner’s discussions with Turks, federal investigators have reached out to Turkish nationals for information on Kushner through the FBI’s legal attache office in Ankara, according to two people familiar with the matter. Separately, Qatari government officials visiting the U.S. in late January and early February considered turning over to Mueller what they believe is evidence of efforts by their country’s Persian Gulf neighbors in coordination with Kushner to hurt their country, four people familiar with the matter said. The Qatari officials decided against cooperating with Mueller for now out of fear it would further strain the country’s relations with the White House, these people said.

Kushner’s family real estate business, Kushner Companies, approached Qatar multiple times, including last spring, about investing in the company’s troubled flagship property at 666 Fifth Avenue in New York, but the government-run sovereign wealth fund declined, according to two people familiar with the discussion. Another discussion of interest to Mueller’s team is a meeting Kushner held at Trump Tower during the transition in December 2016 with a former prime minister of Qatar, Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, or HBJ, according to people familiar with the meeting.

HBJ had been in talks with Kushner Companies about investing in its Fifth Avenue property, which is facing roughly $1.4 billion in debt that is due in 2019, these people said. Those talks with the company continued after Kushner entered the White House and stepped away from the business, but last spring HBJ decided against investing, these people said.

In the weeks after Kushner Companies’ talks with the Qatari government and HBJ collapsed, the White House strongly backed an economically punishing blockade against Qatar, led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, citing the country’s support for terrorism as the impetus. Kushner, who is both President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and a key adviser, has played a major role in Trump’s Middle East policy and has developed close relationships with the crown princes of Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Some top Qatari government officials believe the White House’s position on the blockade may have been a form of retaliation driven by Kushner who was sour about the failed deal, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. Saudi Arabia and UAE have long had a rivalry with Qatar.

The White House, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have said the blockade against Qatar is in retaliation for their government’s support for terrorism.

Any cooperation with Mueller’s probe from foreign nationals or government officials would mark a significant new dimension to the investigation beyond what is currently publicly known…

The only thing dumber than trying to strongarm the Qataris for your two-bit real estate deals is assuming the Qataris weren’t sophisticated enough to let it be known in the right places that you’d tried. These are not a bunch of struggling three-building developers or angry tenants you’re trying to evict, ya dumb goniff.

These people aren’t just an international disgrace, they’re a fvcking embarrassment to the rest of us.

Qatar smelled the dirt on this deal from a long way away. They probably considered it but in the end it was just too fucking obvious for everyone not to notice. When Qatar and AnBang won’t grift with you, the game is pretty much almost over.

Last night, I saw this promo for a new episode of S.W.A.T. White balding captain talks about how L.A. is a sanctuary city; says that now they’re making us (police) picking sides. Cut to a cop body slaming a pro-immigaration protestor on the ground. Art imitating life?

I didn’t watch the episode, but I doubt it was much better than that. Mainstream network shows are usually terrible at being topical. See L&O: SVU.

According to Fox News 24, McMaster has resigned. Other sites say not, but I’m horrified by the suggested replacements in this article. Bolton of course is an asshole, but the other two names are a Ford VP and Oracle CEO. Corporate types For National Security???

Reposting this from downstairs, just because it’s a fresh open thread and I may have a better shot at useful advice:

Tech question for the BJ hive mind:

Over the past couple of weeks, the glass touch screen on my iPhone became detached and started pushing up. Took the device in on Wednesday and the nice folks at UBreakItWeFixIt determined that the (factory original) battery was bulging and forcing the glass up and away from its seating. I touched the old battery, and indeed it was soft and swollen and clearly unhealthy. Several hours and $50 later, I had my iPhone back with a brand-new battery.

But here’s the thing: with this new battery, the charge drains almost before my eyes. Just this evening, I’ve tracked it:

    5:15 pm 100%
    5:30 pm 80%
    5:45 pm 65%
    6:05 pm 50%
    6:15 pm 45%
    6:30 pm 40%

In the past 75 minutes it’s lost 60% of battery power. I haven’t drained it with graphic- or media-heavy apps; have merely been reading Facebook and a couple of blogs, and typed a few comments. No games, no videos or anything like that.

This seems wrong to me. I’ll take it back tomorrow or Monday to the store that replaced the old battery, but any suggestions in the meantime?

(Yes, Bluetooth is turned off. Yes, screen backlight is minimal. Yes, I routinely close all the windows I’m not using.)

Thanks! I know there’s some good advice out there!

From John’s Twitter feed, the Duffelblog story is so sad:

KABUL — A Command Sergeant Major serving in Kabul who reportedly said he’d fight the war “so his son wouldn’t have to” in 2001 sort of feels like an asshole right now, after his son joined the Army a year ago and serves with a unit just a few miles away, sources confirmed today.

“When I said that, I thought we were going to, you know, come in, bomb the shit out of them, shoot a few guys, and split,” said Sgt. Maj. Ted Stevens while noting previous U.S. engagements without a prolonged troop presence such as Vietnam and Korea.

Brad Stevens, a private first class now serving with 2nd Infantry Division, barely remembers the events of Sept. 11, when he was just seven years old.

“I remember my mom and dad just staring at the television screen, and smoke, but I didn’t really know what he meant when he said we needed to ‘bomb them back to the stone age,’” Brad told reporters.

On that day, sources confirmed then-Sgt. Ted Stevens said he would fight this war against terrorists so that “you wouldn’t have to” as he pointed to his young son.

“It’s silly talking about how many years we will have to spend in the mountains of Afghanistan when we could pave the whole country and put parking stripes on it and still be home by Christmas,” Stevens later told a reporter, shortly after landing on the ground in Afghanistan in October 2001.

What a waste we have made of so many good Americans over there. Bring them all home and let the Middle East sort itself out.

I’m really surprised, though – all the reporting had McMaster going out in a month or two, not RIGHTNOWOHMYGOD. Things must be even worse over there than we thought, and we all have a pretty low opinion of the place.

James Bennet is the editorial page editor of the New York Times. He started a couple of years ago, and immediately decided the op-ed page needed more intellectual diversity. One of his first hires was Bret Stephens from the Wall Street Journal, followed by a couple of other conservatives—which sent certain precincts of the left into a tizzy. He also hired some new liberals, but so far all his new writers have been center-left and center-right kinds of people. Andrew Sullivan thinks he should go further:

In 2018, it seems to me you need to have someone who can represent the Bernie left.

While there I asked them to check my iPhone 6’s battery to make sure I didn’t have one of the early obsolescence ones. They ran the diagnostics, took about five minutes total. Made by somebody pig ignorant. The decision to stop having the police ask people about their immigration status didn’t come from some bleeding-heart liberal. It came from Police Chief Darryl Fucking Gates, who A) didn’t want his officers wasting their time on INS’s job and B) realized it would make a lot of immigrants afraid to talk to the police. AFAIK, Special Order 40 (the directive not to ask people about their immigration status) is still widely popular among rank-and-file LAPD officers.

Of course he’s winning, because his teammates won’t go on the record because the operation is still classified. He’s also in trouble with the Navy Special Operations community and the DOD for writing a book without getting it properly vetted and cleared. For whatever reasons the only SEALS you ever hear about or whose names people know all turn out to be horrible people. I kind of wonder why Jared hasn’t got the Orange Atrocity to have the US Gov’t invest in his building for office space or some scam like that.

@efgoldman: I liked the show for a while. Haven’t watched the last several seasons. Despite my professional understanding of the flaws with the premise.

@Spanky: Google translate is not what I’d call really reliable. In fact, it can be downright annoying. I tried it a couple of times to refine things I wanted to say in French. What it produced was more awkward than anything I would have said.

@kindness: I have learned my lesson and only go to Apple with my Apple products. I took my iPad to Best Buy because it was close by. It was having some weird battery troubles. No good. I took it to Apple the next day. They cast some spell over ot & voilà. Everything back to normal & they didn’t charge me for it. Every time I’ve been there they’ve gone above & beyond.

@Gelfling 545: Google is working on Translate. I expect them to make rapid progress over the coming years. TechCrunch (from 2017):

Last fall, Google introduced a new system for machine-assisted language translations, Google Neural Machine Translation system (GNMT), which takes advantage of deep neural networks to translate entire sentences – not just phrases – for greatly improved translations. The company put the system to work in Google Translate for eight language pairs in November, and is today expanding support to three more: Russian, Hindi and Vietnamese.

Neural Machine Translation went into action late last year with support for translating to and from English and French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Turkish. These represent the native languages of around one-third of the world’s population, covering more than 35% of all Google Translate queries, the company said at the time.

    […]

They’re not resting on their laurels, even if it’s still not close to being a Babel fish.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

    @Adam L Silverman:

” That piece was written in a way that you couldn’t tell they were spoofing.”

I knew they were spoofing when they said that troops weren’t left standing in Vietnam and Korea for years, when troops are STILL standing in Korean after 65+ years!
