Despite immediate evidence (sure, we got two feet of fresh snow Tuesday, but next week’s nor’easter may just be wind-driven rain… ) Spring is coming, and we might eventually be able to emerge from our cabins. From “rare, usually late” commentor Dog Mom:
I am in the Rochester area and really need some new acquaintances and contacts with better political sense.
I frequent Buffalo and Niagara Falls, so if there are folks there I would be interested in including them – maybe meeting halfway (in Batavia) or even a separate event.
Maybe next weekend, March 24th or 25th? My time is flexible right now – so I am open to suggestion for time and place.
foucault swing voter mistermix
I live in the Rochester area and would be open to this. The weekend of the 24th/25th isn’t great because I’ll be at the march in DC. How about the weekend after, or a weeknight?
Yutsano
Let me lean on my physicist friend to get on discovering the secret to matter-energy teleportation.
Tarragon
In the Rochester area too but my schedule is wonky. I’ll make a meet up if I can.
I’m pretty surprised that this hasn’t been suggested before. There’s I think two front-pagers from this town.
Dog Mom
I am pretty flexible – I had totally forgotten about the March. I am headed out now, but will check back later tonight.
geg6
Dang, if this was further on in the spring, it’s not a difficult drive from here to Buffalo. I can’t seem to talk any ‘Burgh BJers to do a meet up here, so I’d make a drive for one if it’s not far.
Groucho48
I’d be up for a meet in Buffalo. Rochester is too far for me.
Gelfling 545
I’m in Buffalo & definitely interested. I’ve always been a bit envious of the meet ups in other areas! Maybe somewhere between Buffalo & Rochester?
MomSense
I’m at JFK for the next two hours if there are any Jackals traveling today.
Baud
@MomSense: Do you often hang out in airports?
Gelfling 545
Batavia would be good, though I’m not too familiar with the area.
BCHS Class of 1980
@Tarragon: I didn’t know about mistermix, but I know Doug! lives around there.
SiubhanDuinne
@Baud:
Do you like movies about gladiators?
Central Planning
I’m up for a meetup. I’m in Rochester and can go anywhere
Rochester is only an hour from Buffalo
MomSense
@Baud:
I’m actually really happy to have a layover today. On the way out of the house with my suitcase and bag, my mom followed me to close the door and all of a sudden my dog freaked out, started crying and then pushed past my mom and out the door. Then she ran in circles all around my yard and the neighbors’ yards stopping to bark and tease me. You know when dogs sort of lean forward and crouch on their front legs while sticking their hind ends in the air and wagging their tails like they are daring you to chase them? Yup that’s what she did for a really long time so that we had to entice her into the car with a lot of American cheese and drive her all the way to the airport. I wasn’t exactly dressed for chasing her through waist deep snow.
She’s a very bad girl.

On behalf of the democratic party, Pelosi and Schumer should it make publicly known that the mere scuttlebutt about Sessions firing McGahn is unacceptable, and his dismissal would be intolerable. They should make certain to add that were he fired, the GOP’s chickenshit injustice- indeed, the republican party’s assault against Law Enforcement In America- will be made right in due time..
Yutsano
@No Drought No More: McGahn works for Dolt45. If you’re talking about McCabe, that all becomes moot on Sunday and nothing has happened yet.
SiubhanDuinne
I’ve been waiting for a proper Open Thread for ages, but one hasn’t appeared yet. When it does, I’ll try to remember to repost this.
In the meantime, it’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s 85th birthday!! Happy birthday, Notorious RBG, and I hope you keep on kickin’ ass for many years to come!
Mike J
Niagara Falls? Sloooooooowly I turn.

@MomSense:
It’s Spring, and the sap is running!
(Quick, close the gate — don’t let the sap get into the road!)
MomSense
@Anne Laurie:
I should have filmed her. She was enjoying her romp in the snow.
@SiubhanDuinne:
Here’s a toast to the Notorious RBG.
Mle
Lurker here. In Buffalo. Don’t have a car, so suburbs (places without transit) are a bit hard.
But if there were even a handful of us, I’d come to Essex or somesuch.
athenaze
My spouse and I are long-time lurkers, currently in Rochester. We’d be up for a meet-up if we can make it.
Old Dan and Little Anne
Batavia. I spent a month there one night.
kevin
This lurker grew up in Pittsford. Where “in the Rochester area” are people posting from?? Would love to hear : )
Gelfling 545
“Rochester is only an hour from Buffalo”
So they sat but when I used to visit my nephew there it always seemed to take forever.
Groucho48
More like an hour and a half.
Central Planning
@Gelfling 545: I drive back and forth to Buffalo all the time. If you don’t have something to listen to, it can get monotonous
Zamphuor
Another long time lurker from the Buffalo area here, and I’d definitely be up for a meetup. Will be out of town Easter weekend, but pretty much any other time is good. Buffalo, Rochester, or anywhere in between :)
pika
In Rochester and would love to meet up! Mistermix and I have corresponded, and so it would be great to build out from there!
Dog Mom
Wow the response is great. I think I got everyone who commented and where they could meet:
Rochester
@DougJ
@foucault swing voter mistermix
@Tarragon
@Central Planning (can go anywhere)
@athenaze and spouse
@kevin – Are you still in the area?
@pika
Batavia
@Old Dan and Little Anne – Could you come to either Buffalo or Rochester?
Buffalo
@Groucho48
@Gelfling 545 (could meet in between)
@Mle (In Buffalo, no car)
@Zamphuor (Buffalo, Rochester, or anywhere in between)
Elsewhere
@geg6 (could come to Buffalo)
It looks like we could have Rochester and Buffalo meet ups and maybe even one in Batavia.
The March is the 24th and Easter is the following weekend. Would a weeknight be easier to schedule? I ‘ll suggest Wednesday 3/21 in Rochester and 3/28 in Buffalo. So please comment again regarding date time and a suggestions for places to meet.
Groucho48
During the week, I babysit grandkids from 5:30 to about 8, so, most week nights are out for me. Easter vacation starts April 1, though, so, that week would work for a weeknight.
Geeno
Penfield here – my wife (comments as Mumeltier) and would love to go to a meet up. Looks like a Buffalo meet up and possibly more are in the offing. I work on the east side so heading to Buffalo after work would add half an hour to my travel – doable on a Friday, but harder if I have to show up at work the next day.
Zamphuor
Weeknights are fine, and if Groucho48 can make it Wednesday, April 4, that’s good for me, too. Anybody like the idea of Founding Fathers for a Buffalo meet up?
Zamphuor
…or Friday, as Geeno & wife can make it then :)
Dog Mom
@Zamphuor: April 4 sounds good – maybe 5:30 or 6:00? The pub looks like a fitting place.
I don’t see anything vegan on the menu – don’t know if that is a requirement for anyone. I can call and ask if they might have something they could add to the menu.
@Mle – is this a place you could get to?
Barring any icy weather – I would make my way there.
Other folks (those in Buffalo or able to meet there) – Let me know your thoughts on date, time and location.
Dog Mom
@Geeno: and wife – There are some Rochester folks that would like to meet around here as well – so I think we will probably have a meet up here too. I am trying to figure out a good place – I just don’t get out much.
Groucho48
Founding Fathers is a great choice. April 4th works for me.
Their menu is limited to just a few sandwiches and I don’t know if any are vegan, but, they do have free nachos with salsa and free popcorn.
Mle
Founding fathers on the 4th is fine by me. Tho there seems to be some that can’t do Wed and some that can’t do Fri. Would Thurs the 5th work for everyone?
Old Dan and Little Anne
@Dog Mom: I’m in Rochester. Or as the kids say, The Rock.
Mle
@Mle:
Forget thurs; Misremembered an earlier comment.
Apr 4 fine by me.
athenaze
If people are looking for a place in Rochester, Tap and Mallet (South Wedge) is a good pub, especially if beer is your thing. And they do decent food, too.
Dog Mom
@athenaze: Yes, Tap and Mallet is a good choice – I think a week night is better as weekends can get crowded. I will put Wednesday 3/28 at 5:30 out on the Open thread and see if we get takers or other suggestions. Tap and Mallet (South Wedge)
Zamphuor
Don’t know if this thread is dead, but have we decided on April 4th, 5:30 or 6:00pm, at Founding Fathers’ for Buffalo?:
Dog Mom
@Zamphuor: I think we have agreement on that for Buffalo attendees. And I was going to put 3/28 at Tap and Mallet out for Rochester attendees. At this point, if any one wants to make both that is great. I was just going to put a comment in the Open thread and I will ask Anne Laurie to put up a post.
Gelfling 545
@Geeno: I live in The Buffalo University district & I think a meet a Founding Fathers would be great.
Gelfling 545
@Zamphuor: Either Wednesday or Friday is fine for me.
Zamphuor
OK, sounds good. Looking forward to it!
Nancy
Wow, so glad my husband saw this when I missed it. I’d love to meet with some Juicers. Olds reference to user of alcohol.
Anyway, I’m in a western suburb of Roch-cha-cha (another sign I’m one of the olds). I could meet on a Wednesday evening or if Saturday, March 24 is still open, I’m going to the 3:00 to 5:00PM rally in Washington Square Park. Could meet after that, if Dog Mom and other locals so inclined.
I’m happy to travel to Batavia and Buffalo as well. Please keep me in mind fellow western New Yorkers
Nancy
Nancy again, just saw March 28 at 5:30 at Tap and Mallet. Though I work til 6:00, I can either leave early or trust that you’ll still be mingling and not on the dessert course yet if I arrive at 6ish. So pleased with this plan
Dog Mom
@Nancy: I expect people will be coming and going at different times – look forward to meeting you.
Nancy
@Dog Mom: Me, too.
Groucho48
One thing to be aware of with Founding Fathers…parking can be a problem. Might have to walk a bit.
Dog Mom
@Groucho48: Thank you – good to plan for.
