I’m so old I remember when the right wing collectively lost their shit when President BLACKITY BLACK BLACK BLACK politely noted that perhaps a cop shouldn’t have been an asshole to a black man on his front porch. The world stopped, we had to have a beer summit, and wingnuts and their cohorts in the media and PBA’s across the nation screamed that the Kenyan usurper hated law enforcement and this was proof.
Trump just fired a lifelong law enforcement officer to fuck him out of his pension, and wingnuts are cheering. Funny that, hunh?
Also, last check- has anyone not received their calendar before I give away the remaining few to anyone who will take them?

Afternoon, Cole.
Animal pictures are always welcome. Your posse is so beautiful, each in their different ways.

We now know, without hesitation, that the GOP supports TREASON against this country.
And, now that we know it, they should be treated accordingly.
When I say that they should never be allowed to say the word PATRIOTISM ever again…I mean it.

I’m so old and cynical it does not surprise me. Disgust, however, is on-going.

Open thread? The mushroom sellers next to me gave me double the amount of fresh oyster mushrooms (like 2 lbs) and now I’m trying to decide what to do with them all. Already have 1/2 a mushroom quiche to finish, so not that. Suggestions welcome.

The Mashup of Fox news stating that Obama was a complete and utter incompetent because he said he would talk to North Korea compared with Fox stating that DJT should be given the Nobel Peace Prize for exactly the same thing is exactly why the media in the US is completely and utterly fucked up.

Speaking of calendars, shouldn’t Balloon Juice adopt UMBC for March Madness? A team named the Retrievers upset the Number 1 team in the tournament. Of course John’s home state is going to have tomorrow. West Virginia vs. Marshall

@satby: Various east-asian stir-fries and risotto are where we usually use oyster mushrooms. Though I think NYCMT’s sauce sounds excellent.

@satby: You can also add a little cream to make a cream sauce.

@satby: Had an amazing dinner at a friend’s house last weekend and she served a mushroom + gnocchi dish that was amazing (I could eat mushrooms every meal, but Mr & Little C hate them). I’ve asked for the recipe, but don’t have it yet. Chicken + mushroom + garlic (all hot) on a (cold) salad w/vinaigrette dressing = best.
MisterForkbeard
If there’s one thing the ongoing Trump Debacle has made clear, it’s that both the media and republicans won’t ever reach bottom. The media will claim something is “controversial”, or “critics say this is probably illegal”, while Republicans will pretend they’re ashamed and then cheer Trump on wholeheartedly.
There is literally no depth to which they will not sink.
satby
Ok, I am going with NYCMT’s suggestion but using fettuccini because that’s what I have. It’s a huge amount of mushrooms though, so I may get puff pastry at the store and make the bourekas too, because those sound delicious!
Thanks everyone!
satby
@Yarrow: mmmmmm!
Yutsano
@satby: You could go French on them, which is actually a good spread to have around.
Or send them to me…

Anyone want to look at 30 teasers for THE WIND READER (my Sept book) and pick the 10 they like the best? On the plus side, you get to read the teasers! On the minus side, you have to read the teasers! They’re maybe 50 words each at most.

The right wing is really good about punching someone in the nose, and them complaining that they’re the real victims because they hurt their knuckles. As the mainstream press is owned by rich people, they cheerfully publish Republican lies and carefully criticize any truths told by Democrats.
We need to get outraged and have a simple, one-sentence mantra to drill into the media. Republicans are traitors should do the trick.

@James E. Powell: I have a few friends and relatives that are retired policemen. I had a conversation with a couple of them years ago about profiling. They are completely confident that they know a bad guy when they see one and that most experienced officers can as well. They were concerned that there are innocent looking bad guys that get past them. If I recall correctly the conversation started over some statistics that were being compiled on police stops. They considered it an annoyance. In my IT career we used statistics to find the most important weak points and cost saving measures I was very supportive of collecting stats and was only wondering if the stats were measuring the right things. They scoffed at any measurements at all.
Yarrow
@schrodingers_cat: Do you have a recipe or can you describe how you make this? The words “quick” and “curry” don’t really go together in my mind. Unless I’m just opening a jar of curry sauce or something.

@Betty Cracker: It is the Gnocchi w/Wild Mushroom & Rosemary Ragu from ‘The Accidental Vegetarian’ by Simon Rimmer. I’m going to have to find that cookbook!
Yarrow
@schrodingers_cat: Well, then count me as blasphemous. I have used jars of various sauces on occasion. I do not have that cookbook, so I guess I’ll just have to wonder how to make it.
schrodingers_cat
@Yarrow: Here you go.
1 tsp mustard seed
1 green chili split lengthwise (serrano or Thai birds eye)
2 to 3 cloves of garlic chopped
1 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp cayenne
1/4 tsp turmeric
1 tsp sugar
1 tbsp tomato paste
1 cup shrimp shelled (any size)
1 cup mushrooms sliced
salt to taste
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp heavy cream or coconut milk
Heat the oil in thick bottomed pan (Calphalon, cast iron ).
When it is hot, add mustard seeds, when the mustard seeds start popping add the tomato sauce, dry spices and garlic.
Saute for a couple of minutes, then add shrimp, toss till all the shrimp are coated.
Then add the mushrooms, coat them with the spice mix.
Add salt.
Add water and simmer for 5 min
Add heavy cream or coconut milk
Add a dash of lime and the cilantro.
Take it off the heat, as soon as the shrimp start turning pink

@schrodingers_cat: Thank you! That sounds delicious. Doesn’t look too difficult. I don’t keep all those ingredients on hand but I do have most of them. My cilantro (in the garden) keeps bolting so I have to buy it and I almost never remember.

I didn’t receive my calendar. Mail to my office is a mess, though, so it could still be sitting in a post office central place where all my packages go to die.
