Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Everyone is in a bubble, but some bubbles model reality far better than others!

Optimism opens the door to great things.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

We’re not going back!

I was promised a recession.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Just a Reminder

I’m so old I remember when the right wing collectively lost their shit when President BLACKITY BLACK BLACK BLACK politely noted that perhaps a cop shouldn’t have been an asshole to a black man on his front porch. The world stopped, we had to have a beer summit, and wingnuts and their cohorts in the media and PBA’s across the nation screamed that the Kenyan usurper hated law enforcement and this was proof.

Trump just fired a lifelong law enforcement officer to fuck him out of his pension, and wingnuts are cheering. Funny that, hunh?

Also, last check- has anyone not received their calendar before I give away the remaining few to anyone who will take them?

We now know, without hesitation, that the GOP supports TREASON against this country.
And, now that we know it, they should be treated accordingly.

When I say that they should never be allowed to say the word PATRIOTISM ever again…I mean it.

The Mashup of Fox news stating that Obama was a complete and utter incompetent because he said he would talk to North Korea compared with Fox stating that DJT should be given the Nobel Peace Prize for exactly the same thing is exactly why the media in the US is completely and utterly fucked up.

If there’s one thing the ongoing Trump Debacle has made clear, it’s that both the media and republicans won’t ever reach bottom. The media will claim something is “controversial”, or “critics say this is probably illegal”, while Republicans will pretend they’re ashamed and then cheer Trump on wholeheartedly.

There is literally no depth to which they will not sink.

The right wing is really good about punching someone in the nose, and them complaining that they’re the real victims because they hurt their knuckles. As the mainstream press is owned by rich people, they cheerfully publish Republican lies and carefully criticize any truths told by Democrats.

@James E. Powell: I have a few friends and relatives that are retired policemen. I had a conversation with a couple of them years ago about profiling. They are completely confident that they know a bad guy when they see one and that most experienced officers can as well. They were concerned that there are innocent looking bad guys that get past them. If I recall correctly the conversation started over some statistics that were being compiled on police stops. They considered it an annoyance. In my IT career we used statistics to find the most important weak points and cost saving measures I was very supportive of collecting stats and was only wondering if the stats were measuring the right things. They scoffed at any measurements at all.

    @Yarrow: Here you go.
    1 tsp mustard seed
1 green chili split lengthwise (serrano or Thai birds eye)
2 to 3 cloves of garlic chopped
    1 tbsp oil
    1/2 tsp cayenne
    1/4 tsp turmeric
    1 tsp sugar
    1 tbsp tomato paste
1 cup shrimp shelled (any size)
    1 cup mushrooms sliced
    salt to taste
    1/2 cup chopped cilantro
    1/2 cup water
2 tbsp heavy cream or coconut milk

Heat the oil in thick bottomed pan (Calphalon, cast iron ).
When it is hot, add mustard seeds, when the mustard seeds start popping add the tomato sauce, dry spices and garlic.
Saute for a couple of minutes, then add shrimp, toss till all the shrimp are coated.
Then add the mushrooms, coat them with the spice mix.
    Add salt.
Add water and simmer for 5 min
Add heavy cream or coconut milk
Add a dash of lime and the cilantro.
Take it off the heat, as soon as the shrimp start turning pink

    @satby:
@schrodingers_cat: This has no mushrooms, whatsoever, but came up while I was surfing today.

Irish blog with a recipe for crockpot chicken tikka masala. Seemed a good item for today. CHEATER CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA

Once upon a time in Ireland, white Irish Protestants were virtually the only minority segment of the the overwhelmingly white Irish Catholic population. Now Ireland has the youngest population in the EU and its monocultural, monotheistic nature has given way to a newfound multicultural Ireland complete with religious and ethnic diversity including [list of scads of nationalities]. …

In the 1980’s and 1990’s many Indians immigrated to Ireland to work as doctors and nurses to replace Irish medical professionals who emigrated elsewhere. As the Irish economy boomed during the Celtic Tiger era, more and more Indians immigrated to Ireland to work in all kinds of jobs. Now, the South Asian population is thought to make up 1 to 3 percent of the total population of Ireland. Interestingly, the establishment of Indian restaurants in Ireland pre-dates the most significant waves of Indian immigration to the country by over half a century.

The first Indian restaurant in Ireland opened in 1908 … pre-dating London’s first Indian restaurant by three years… [but] only lasted a year. [More sprang up in the 1950s and 60s.] At first, these restaurants primarily served Indian students studying at Trinity and their adventurous Irish companions. By the late 1980’s the Indian population in Ireland was larger and more Irish people were familiar with Indian food.

… The origins of chicken tikka masala are uncertain. Did it come from India? Glasgow? England? Wherever it came from, there’s no question that it is an incredibly popular dish in England, Scotland and Ireland. And it’s delicious. It’s even delicious when you make a cheater version like this one.
