Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Everybody saw this coming.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

“woke” is the new caravan.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Republican source to me just now: “The McCabe Memos are the new Pentagon Papers.” #MuellerTime

— Joy Reid (@JoyAnnReid) March 17, 2018

We are a mere 21 hours past the McCabe firing and the headlines on cable news are all about McCabe’s memos.

This is the most delicious vendetta fail in the history of petty vengeance.

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) March 17, 2018

The Mueller probe should never have been started in that there was no collusion and there was no crime. It was based on fraudulent activities and a Fake Dossier paid for by Crooked Hillary and the DNC, and improperly used in FISA COURT for surveillance of my campaign. WITCH HUNT!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 18, 2018

Quick rundown: The Mueller probe was the continuation of the FBI probe which was not based on the dossier. And the FISA on Carter Page came after he left the campaign. There have been 5 guilty pleas and more than a dozen indicted individuals/entities. https://t.co/2yGgln7HPh

— Kyle Cheney (@kyledcheney) March 18, 2018

As dangerous as Trump might seem, if you really look back at his track record, you’ll find little more than a long trail of coercion and threats.

When the person can be neither coerced or intimidated, Trump folds like a house of cards and runs.

3/

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) March 18, 2018

It’s reasonable to fear what he might do as the walls close in… but not so much that it eats you up.

No matter how loudly Trump rattles his saber, the guy is an impotent do nothing when the opponent ain’t afraid to draw their weapon too.

He’s a coward. Remember that.

I continue to be concerned that he’ll lash out at Iran, N Korea or somewhere as the walls close in around him. He’s increasingly surrounded by a team of belligerent idiots who might egg him on in that. We may end up missing Tillerson, for example.

Well, Trump didn’t have access to nuclear weapons or was in command of hundreds of thousands of troops that cheer whenever he says horrific shit back then. I’m still worried that the power will go to his head and he’ll do something we’ll all regret.

I think the difference is that in the past, Trumpov was a fairly minor real estate developer in New York with a reputation of running off at the mouth. Now he is in a position to do real damage to this country and even to the world. But in the final analysis he is a coward, always has been. My fear is that he is becoming increasingly unhinged and will almost surely trigger a constitutional crisis. What will the American public do in that case? And what will the Republican Party do in that case?

@feebog: Good points about Trumpov’s past, but the flipside, as we’re seeing, is that as President everything he does is in blinding light–even more so because of his narcissism and incessent need to tweet and be the center of our world. And of course the other part of the flipside is all of us, and all of the opposition, and any resonable or patriotic Republicans who choose to put country above party. We’ll see. Meanwhile, the common nightmare we’re all in continues…

I saw a story on mental illness this morning (CBS Sunday Morning), Glenn Close and the online community for the issue, and I was thinking, what is the “American community”? Is it Facebook?

Anyway, later today I got to this thought: Democrats should start inserting “America” and “American rule of law” and “American values” every time they talk. Take back the word. When asked, make it plain that they are the party of our nation. The other party, and certainly their leader, are not. Just a thought for a Sunday night.

Small but amusing: I picked out new glasses this weekend, including a special pair that will be computer/reading glasses. I was trying to find a photo of the frames online to show a friend and it turns out that it’s called “Bookcase.” That’s a seriously appropriate pick right there. ?

I ended up asking for computer/reading only progressives because only my reading prescription has been changing, not my distance vision, and I already miss plenty of steps wearing my normal glasses. I don’t need any help from progressives.

    FYI.

U.S. President Donald Trump will unveil a plan Monday to combat the opioid addiction crisis that includes seeking the death penalty for drug dealers and urging Congress to toughen sentencing laws for drug traffickers, White House officials say.
    [snip]
“The Department of Justice will seek the death penalty against drug traffickers when it’s appropriate under current law,” said Andrew Bremberg, director of Trump’s Domestic Policy Council, in the briefing detailing the plan.

The White House did not offer any specific examples of when it would be appropriate to seek the death penalty for drug dealers and referred further questions to the Justice Department. Source

For the “I’m shocked, shocked” folder.

National Geographic magazine editors wanted to take a close look at the publication’s coverage of race over its 130-year history. Once they did, they discovered that their coverage of race relations was stereotypical and poor.

National Geographic’s most recent issue includes a letter from Editor in Chief Susan Goldberg that discloses the results of a study conducted by a University of Virginia history professor who examined the magazine’s history of race coverage.

The professor, John Edwin Mason, found that the magazine “all but ignored people of color who lived in the United States, rarely acknowledging them beyond laborers or domestic works [sic].”
    [snip]
Each issue of National Geographic this year will be part of a series on racial, ethnic and religious groups and will include coverage of Latinos, Asian Americans, Muslims and Native Americans. Source

Too bad about the “both” romance. Some of the best scenes in the game are related to your romance, and I’m not ashamed to say that Triss Is Best Girl. Especially since there’s some (very minor) effects of your romance in Blood and Wine.

Similar to but much harder hitting than the previous games’ use of demihumans as both terrorists AND freedom fighters. You can justify either side. The baron is the same sort of thing, and you can see the same dynamic in Hearts of Stone as well. They’re both just… sad.

Just finished reading Olivia Nuzzi’s long read about Hope Hicks in NY Mag. Good gossip. In the category of duh!, John Kelly is a major misogynist:

But just as Kelly didn’t understand Jared and Ivanka, he also didn’t understand Hicks, and he sometimes blamed her for habits Trump had been forming for 71 years. “He was extraordinarily dismissive of her. He would refer to her as ‘the high-schooler,’ he would joke about how she was inexperienced, she was in over her head, she was immature,” a former senior White House official told me. “He doesn’t like a woman that potentially has some position of power over him. He thinks women should be subservient to him. If you look at his relationship with Ivanka or Hope — women who aren’t subservient to him — he has problems with those people.”

The White House is a snake pit. Also duh, but it fazes me how open they are about it.

Her creation, Perez, is a Fair Isle man whose unlikely surname speaks of the ancestry she conjured for him. More than 100 ships have been wrecked off this tiny island, including, in 1588, a remnant of the storm-scattered Spanish Armada, El Gran Grifón (the wreck was discovered in 1970). Some survivors are said to have spent many weeks on the island: is it so unlikely that one or two stayed, perhaps falling for a local girl? Cleeves thought not.

Occurred to me me you might appreciate WW1’s Frontline Cameraman, a documentary on the first war cinematographer, Geoffrey Malins, during the war years. He filmed footage in the trenches and also on the battlefield of the Somme (that footage shown in theaters while the war was ongoing). Available on Amazon Prime. As a documentary, just so-so, however there is a goodly amount of his actual film work included.

People keep forgetting: Trump’s tweets aren’t meant to sway or intimidate Mueller, the FBI, the DOJ, or Stormy, or anyone except the dead-eyed Fox viewers in their MAGA hats and government-funded Hoverrounds. If he can keep them in line, their outraged phone calls and faxes keep legislators in line and then when Mueller eventually lowers the boom (or Trump tries to fire him), the entire GOP can just call it Fake News and declare that it’s time to move on.

@Omnes Omnibus: Watched the first season and it was fun, but it didn’t have the depth of the original. Realized what was wrong when I read a review that pointed out that the original novel was written about the Tories at the height of Margaret Thatcher’s power, about the power struggle after Thatcher’s resignation. How close was it to current events? Thatcher resigned while the show was on the air. Therefore, to match the BBC’s daring, Netflix would have needed to portray a thinly disguise Ted Cruz or equivalent. Or maybe a Mitch McConnell, campaigning in the name of the base, and screwing them over on Capitol Hill. Obama would have to be an offscreen character, shown through news footage. Spacey as a fantasy Southern Democrat doesn’t cut it. Not tied closely enough to the actual compromises and betrayals involved in Republican DoNothing Politics. That would have been something.

However, I might watch the upcoming Robin Wright season.

Bertolucci’s intention by his own admission was to humiliate her so that she wouldn’t actually be “acting” her response to the sexual assault – in other words, for her to feel as if she had been sexually assaulted. And for the record, here’s Wikipedia’s definition of rape (emphasis added):

Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration carried out against a person without that person’s consent. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority, or against a person who is incapable of giving valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, has an intellectual disability or is below the legal age of consent.[1][2][3]
