Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This blog will pay for itself.

We still have time to mess this up!

T R E 4 5 O N

The words do not have to be perfect.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Come on, man.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Not all heroes wear capes.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Let there be snark.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Republicans in disarray!

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

A Senator Walker would also be an insult to reason, rationality, and decency.

“Lack of candor”, it’s a term of art… and he’s an artistic little bigot!

Nearly a year before Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired senior FBI official Andrew McCabe for what Sessions called a “lack of candor,” McCabe oversaw a federal criminal investigation into whether Sessions lacked candor when testifying before Congress about contacts with Russian operatives, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.

Democratic lawmakers have repeatedly accused Sessions of misleading them in congressional testimony and called on federal authorities to investigate, but McCabe’s previously-unreported decision to actually put the attorney general in the crosshairs of an FBI probe was an exceptional move.

One source told ABC News that Sessions was not aware of the investigation when he decided to fire McCabe last Friday less than 48 hours before McCabe, a former FBI deputy director, was due to retire from government and obtain a full pension, but an attorney representing Sessions declined to confirm that…

Two months ago, Sessions was interviewed by Mueller’s team, and the federal inquiry related to his candor during his confirmation process has since been shuttered, according to a lawyer representing Sessions.

“The Special Counsel’s office has informed me that after interviewing the attorney general and conducting additional investigation, the attorney general is not under investigation for false statements or perjury in his confirmation hearing testimony and related written submissions to Congress,” attorney Chuck Cooper told ABC News on Wednesday…

Always remember, children: It’s not a lie if you actually believe it…

Somebody on Twitter pointed out that the FBI or DOJ who said Sessions isn’t currently under investigation for lying to Congress chose their words very carefully. Hopefully Mueller has some cards up his sleeves on Bilbo Bigot.

Is this shit ever going to end? I’ve seen fucked up, surreal movies that I thought would never end. Most of them, I just gave up and stopped watching. That’s the good thing about movies. You don’t have to see them through to the end if they’re bad enough to not be worth watching. The hitch here is that we are the fucking movie. It’s so fucking tiring.

In the recording, Conditt described the devices he used during the bombings in Central Texas, Manley said. The seven devices include four that exploded in Austin, one that detonated at a FedEx facility in Schertz, one that was retrieved from a FedEx facility in Southeast Austin near the airport, and one that the suspect detonated in his car, killing himself early Wednesday, authorities have said.

I’m not sure that it will mention the motive.

Overall, millennials have moved toward the Democratic column – 53 percent either leaned or identified with the Democratic party in 2014, and 58 percent do so today. But for men overall there been very little movement — and as noted above, there has been a large move towards the Democratic Party among millennial women.

One thing driving this disparity: What we’re seeing among white millennials. White millennial men are more likely to identify or lean as Republican than they did in 2014. The opposite is true for white millennial women. In 2014, 45 percent were either registered as or leaned Republican, versus 46 percent who could be claimed by the Democrats. By 2017, 31 percent of white female millennials fell into the Republican category, versus 62 percent either fully identifying or leaning Democrat.

    Fascinating.

I know we’re all beyond weary of Trump’s tweets, but I have to say this pair from earlier today knocked me back on my heels a bit:

I called President Putin of Russia to congratulate him on his election victory (in past, Obama called him also). The Fake News Media is crazed because they wanted me to excoriate him. They are wrong! Getting along with Russia (and others) is a good thing, not a bad thing…….
…..They can help solve problems with North Korea, Syria, Ukraine, ISIS, Iran and even the coming Arms Race. Bush tried to get along, but didn’t have the “smarts.” Obama and Clinton tried, but didn’t have the energy or chemistry (remember RESET). PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH!

First, yes, Obama called Putin after his (Putin’s) 2012 reëlection victory, but he deliberately waited five days before placing the call and he explicitly did not congratulate him.

Second, does anyone on the planet think Trump knows, let alone knows how to spell or use, the word “excoriate”? Who wrote this?

Third, “even the coming Arms Race” sounds aspirational. He is slavering for an arms race, presumably with NoKo, but who knows with him?

Finally, that all-caps “PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH!” gives me flashback gollywobbles to the rhetoric of Stalin’s USSR. But it’s more his own style — a totally different writing style than the “excoriate” bit. Is he tweeting by committee now? Is there a Trump Twitter Team now?

“PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH!” is weirding me right out.

    un-DJT-like vocabulary detected, indeed.

The analysis assessed the first 30,000 words each president spoke in office, and ranked them on the Flesch-Kincaid grade level scale and more than two dozen other common tests analyzing English-language difficulty levels. Trump clocked in around mid-fourth grade, the worst since Harry Truman, who spoke at nearly a sixth-grade level.

    @Cermet: As I said a few hours ago…

One could easily imagine a Good Cop/Bad Cop thing going on with Sessions. E.g. Sen. Mark Warner said there are various “red lines” that Trump better not cross, including doing “anything” to interfere with Mueller’s investigation. We all know that Donnie hates Sessions for one simple reason – that he recused himself in the Russia investigation and lost control of Mueller. So the only reason why he would fire him would be as a stepping stone to getting rid of Mueller.

Everyone knows that, so Sessions is pretty much guaranteed a job as long as Donnie is afraid of the blowback if he fires him. Warner and the rest of the Democrats would have a tough time demanding his head for anything (no matter how horrible) until Mueller is done. Therefore, since Jeffy is untouchable, why shouldn’t he do all the horrible things that he’s dreamed of all his life?? No consequences!!

    :-/

    Cheers,

@germy: I am tired of all this bitching about Illinois’ open primary system. There is no other option in the state, number one. Number two is that there is no concrete reason to conclude that there was sufficient cross voting to make a difference in the specific primary being referred to.

First, you can only have a closed primary if the state requires party preference be noted at the time a person registers to vote. Illinois does not do that. So fine, some say, just have Illinois require that. Sure that would work with new registrations, but then you are asking all the millions of registered voters to somehow declare their preference for future elections.

How are you going to do that? About the only way is to have someone go and find every registered voter in person and ask them to declare. Sending out notices is not going to work. They never have and never will.

You could make them declare the next time they vote in an election, but that would mean going through several election cycles to even think you have a sufficient percentage declared.

You could start doing things now, but probably the earliest you could have a closed primary is 2030.

So would those that are bitching about this, come up with a way of doing what you want to see or stop the bitching.

    @? ?? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ? ?:

I was shocked to learn they wanted ipads and phones instead of toys. Even kids in the late 90s and early-to-mid 2000s played with real toys. Or at least I did.

Of course you can play video games on these devices, but I take your point. It seems like a definite shift in popular culture.

Maybe something a bit similar. My college age niece and nephew never played any board games. Not even Monopoly. Not Trivial Pursuit. The entire category of games was dead to them.

“Like” is way too strong a word. It is the dismal vehicle for my daily dose of Perry Mason, Peter Gunn and, lately, 77 Sunset Strip. Most of the ’70s-90s stuff has not aged very well, except for The Rockford Files and a few others. But thanks for the heads-up.

I’m not sure the new Pacific Rim will be as good as the original.

The early reviews are mixed. But some suggest that the movie will definitely knock Black Panther off the Number 1 perch this weekend.

    But…was the original any good?
