For those asking, here's the three Democrats running to take on Steve King (there will be a primary in June): @Scholten4Iowa @LeannForIowa @apaschenforiowa #IA04

Iowa-based, or knowledgeable, commentors: Which of these three have the best shot at unseating Rep. Pig Muck?

Love, adore, almost worship Emma G.
Loathe, detest, almost hate Steve K.
That is all.
satby
Based on how they treated another smart passionate woman, we better get ready for the thirty year smear job the right wing will pull on Emma Gonzalez.
Jeffro
@satby: they can try…I don’t think Hogg is gonna let that happen, though. Also, times a couple ten million “iGen” kids and millennials also too.
Major Major Major Major
@Jeffro:
Really hope they get a name that isn’t a riff on a product line.

The kids have one thing right. They will outlive Rep. Pig Muck. They will remember this scum and vote Democrat all their lives. And after the primary in June, I will donate to whoever is his opponent and write postcards and make calls and whatever else I can do. He’s one of the ones I hope gets caught with his hand in the Russia/Qatar/Saudi Arabia cookie jar.
condorcet runner-up
What I love about these kids is they don’t stoop to the level of mouth-breathers like Rep. King, but that doesn’t also mean that they can’t dish it back and then some. Calling out Rubio to talk to his colleague is simple, but devastating. Very elegant response. Professional dems could learn a thing or two from these kids.
Hungry Joe
Lock Steve King in a room for five minutes for with Emma Gonzalez and there’d be nothing left of him but a grease spot and the splattered cantaloupe that used to be his head.
I mean that metaphorically, of course. I think.
Mathguy
As anyone with a brain comments about Steve King: “Christ, what an asshole.”
Being in Omaha, I’m glad he’s northwestern Iowa’s problem.
SFAW
So Steve King, you racist motherfucker –
Do you have a Confederate battle flag on your desk because Iowa was one of the Traitor States? No, you say? Well, is it because you were born in one of the Traitor States? No, again?
Hmmmm. So why EVER would you have a flag symbolizing support for slavery in a place of honor on your desk? I’ll even give you 30 seconds to come up with some bullshit answer.
You racist motherfucker.
ETA: Yes, I know it’s an approximation of the Army of NoVA flag, etc.

@Jeffro: Don’t count out the younger cadre of GenX, those closer to the millennial cutoff like me with my 1977 bday. I came of age during the height of the Clinton smear job. It ended up giving me a very strong bullshit detector very early. I watched in horror in 2016 as all the old crap was brought up again, and debunking did very little to slow it down or stop it. Now i know it was the russian bots/trolls who were driving it even more than the usual idiots. I plan to back Emma as best as i can. Even if its tiny donations to help the cause and doing my best at the ballot box. I know some of the older GenX went very conservative, but i do know that many of us in the younger end of our tiny age group are pretty damned liberal.

David Hogg is a jiu-jitsu master of Twitter. I hope dumbass Republicans never figure out that they shouldn’t fuck with these kids online. It’s the kids’ home turf, and they know every (figurative) square inch of it.

I am sorry to say that King is very popular with his constituents. He beat Christie Vilsack last time. I don’t think he’s vulnerable and he’s not mine so I admit I haven’t paid a lot of attention to the D candidates. Someone else undoubtedly knows more than I do about them.
Now two other Iowa reps are vulnerable: Rod Blum of IA 1 (my district, northeast) and Young of IA 3 (southwest). I’m almost sad that I don’t expect to still be living here in November because it would be great to vote Blum out.

IA-04 is an R+11 district, the same as PA-18. So anything’s possible.
That said, Steve King is an incumbent, and unfortunately, a relatively popular one among most of his constituents. Rick Saccone was not an incumbent, and wasn’t especially popular in the district in which he was running. And he only barely lost.
Taking out Steve King would be fantastic, but it would probably take a child rape scandal or something on par with that to get him out. This vile outburst won’t hurt him a bit there.
Flipping R+11 districts can be done, but the odds of pulling it off drop significantly if it requires beating a 7-term incumbent. Or any incumbent, really.

As far as I can tell, the DCCC is not taking sides yet.
As is so often, if they commit funds, they’ll choose someone they think will win, not necessarily someone who _should_ win. Whoever they choose (if they do), some people will be butthurt.
JD Scholten is the fundraising leader, by quite a bit, and I’ve sent him a couple contributions.
I’ve been giving money to Leann Jacobsen too.
But King’s district is R+many, and its racist Dutch Reformed farmers and tinytown residents have internalized King as the outspoken figurehead of their tribe, even though he’s one of the most worthless members of the House (seven terms: only one bill introduced, IIRC, and that to rename a postoffice or something). The district has almost no racial or ethnic or religious diversity, and likes it that way; the residents defend King’s bigotry because they agree with him.
So help, please, but don’t get emotionally committed to winning, because chances are good that King will prevail.
In the normal course of trailing-indicator states, the blue wave would reach Iowa in about six to eight more years — but I’m not confident that it will ever arrive, because the young people and the ambitious have been leaving the state for so many years that the remaining old, white populace seems committed to the idea of closing the state’s doors to the post-1990 world, even if it tanks the economy and finishes the job of destroying the schools.

Most of King’s district is lily white, but there are a few towns that are growing because they have a meat packing plant or other industrial plant. Those towns (especially the meat packing towns) have large numbers of Hispanic and African immigrants. My home town is similar, currently 50% Hispanic, 10%African & 40% White multigenerational US. Dutch have a valiant tradition
Actual Nederlanders are pretty self-righteous, and have been for centuries, but they live in a tiny nation surrounded by people with different languages and religions. They are tolerant because experience has taught them to be tolerant.
Iowa’s Dutch Reformed protestants abandoned the “cosmopolitan” fleshpots of Amsterdam and Rotterdam for the wilds of Iowa over a century and a half ago, and since then, they’ve seen nothing that shakes their consensus belief that their rural, provincial, parochial way of life is Right with a capital R.
