Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

This fight is for everything.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Nikki Haley, who can’t acknowledge ‘slavery’, is a pathetic shill.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Republicans in disarray!

Let there be snark.

Putin dreamed of ending NATO, and now it’s Finnish-ed.

This blog will pay for itself.

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Monday Morning Open Thread: LIKE A QUEEN!

by Anne Laurie|  March 5, 20184:50 am| 78 Comments

This post is in: KULCHA!, Open Threads, Proud to Be A Democrat, Daydream Believers

This little girl looking at Michelle Obama's portrait is making the internet FEEL EMOTIONS https://t.co/JjhQmHU4ah pic.twitter.com/oEFsCj8AXt

— Cosmopolitan (@Cosmopolitan) March 3, 2018

Two year old Parker Curry looks at the official portrait of Michelle Obama. Her mom says, "I'm just trying to raise a little girl who has opportunities to see women who look like her doing great things" https://t.co/iOl0KugQD9 pic.twitter.com/KUZAcCGtyW

— Robert Maguire (@RobertMaguire_) March 2, 2018

Sometimes the internet doesn’t suck. Per the Washington Post

Parker Curry, age 2, was not being cooperative.

Standing in front of the new painting of former first lady Michelle Obama at the National Portrait Gallery, Parker ignored her mother’s pleas to turn around for a photo.

“All I wanted was just one pic,” Parker’s mother, Jessica Curry, said Sunday. “She was just so fixated on the portrait and wouldn’t turn away from it.”

Curry, a lifelong District resident, was so fixated on her daughter being fixated on the portrait that she didn’t see a man to the side taking a cellphone photo of the moment — Parker in utter awe, her mouth agape.

The next morning, Curry said, her phone “blew up.”

The man to the side — 37-year-old Ben Hines of Alexandria — posted the photo on Facebook. It went really, really viral. And suddenly, little Parker went from being a little difficult to being more than a little famous.

The photo, taken Thursday, has been shared, liked, tweeted, retweeted and Instagrammed thousands of times around the world. Obama reacted with not one but three heart-eye emoji…

Parker, in her less than 36 months alive, has become a big admirer of the former first lady. She especially enjoyed seeing Obama dance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” After seeing the portrait, Parker thinks Obama is a “queen.”

(Curry is not certain her daughter knows that Michelle’s husband is former president Barack Obama or that he even exists.)…

Buzzfeed has a quote from the artist, Amy Sherald:

… When I look at this picture I think back to my first field trip in elementary school to a museum. I had only seen paintings in encyclopedias up to that point in my life. There was a show up of work by painter @thebobartlett whose work still inspires me to this day. There was a painting of a black man standing in front of a house. I don’t remember a lot about my childhood, but I do have a few emotional memories etched into my mind forever and seeing that painting of a man that looked like he could be my father stopped me dead in my tracks… I knew I wanted to be an artist already, but seeing that painting made me realize that I could. What dreams may come?… #representationmatters

I don’t know if Parker will actually remember the moment in this photo, but I can attest that some of my very earliest memories are of specific museum exhibits (an Egyptian lion-headed sculpture at the Metropolitan, a tiny perfect Peruvian silver llama at the Heyes) — and, of course, she’s got this picture to remind her now.

This little girl's powerful reaction is why we march. It's why we fight. It's why, no matter how tired we may become, we keep pressing forward. Because our actions today will transcend generations. https://t.co/aLn8imFpWw

Now They Tell Us Open Thread: Trump’s “Pure Madness”

by Anne Laurie|  March 4, 20189:10 pm| 207 Comments

This post is in: Dolt 45, Open Threads, Republicans in Disarray!, Trump Crime Cartel, Ever Get The Feeling You've Been Cheated?, Fucked-up-edness, I Smell a Pulitzer!

Trump is being described as unhinged, isolated, depressed, and losing his mind. https://t.co/fE0W4I448h pic.twitter.com/HTng72Sn6m

— Sarah Reese Jones (@PoliticusSarah) March 2, 2018

Unlike Nixon, Trump will not be caught talking to portraits in White House corridors. He has no clue who they are. https://t.co/u6aDGXXQnu

— David Simon (@AoDespair) March 3, 2018

CNN, “The Great Unraveling”:

Not since Richard Nixon started talking to the portraits on the walls of the West Wing has a president seemed so alone against the world.

One source — who is a presidential ally — is worried, really worried. The source says this past week is “different,” that advisers are scared the President is spiraling, lashing out, just out of control. For example: Demanding to hold a public session where he made promises on trade tariffs before his staff was ready, not to mention willing. “This has real economic impact,” says the source, as the Dow dropped 420 points after the President’s news Thursday. “Something is very wrong.”

Even by Trumpian standards, the chaos and the unraveling at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are a stunning — and recurring — problem.

But there’s an up-against-the-wall quality to the past couple of weeks that is striking, and the crescendo is loud, clear, unhealthy, even dangerous…

It is difficult to overstate how much cable news coverage (and chyrons in particular) influences Trump — his moods, his impressions of other officials, his policy views, his political instincts https://t.co/wL8Wt3vLRT

— Philip Rucker (@PhilipRucker) March 3, 2018

It’s this magisterial Washington Post report that seems to be getting the most attention:

Inside the White House, aides over the past week have described an air of anxiety and volatility — with an uncontrollable commander in chief at its center.

These are the darkest days in at least half a year, they say, and they worry just how much farther President Trump and his administration may plunge into unrest and malaise before they start to recover. As one official put it: “We haven’t bottomed out.”

Trump is now a president in transition, at times angry and increasingly isolated. He fumes in private that just about every time he looks up at a television screen, the cable news headlines are trumpeting yet another scandal. He voices frustration that son-in-law Jared Kushner has few on-air defenders. He revives old grudges. And he confides to friends that he is uncertain about whom to trust…

Incompetence or Disloyalty?

by Cheryl Rofer|  March 4, 20188:00 pm| 69 Comments

That always seems to be the choice with these bozos.

Can you think of an explanation for this that doesn't involve incompetence or disloyalty? I can't.

State Dept. Was Granted $120 Million to Fight Russian Meddling. It Has Spent $0. https://t.co/XW8yIBZUnX

— hilzoy (@hilzoy) March 5, 2018

Mr. Tillerson has voiced skepticism that the United States is even capable of doing anything to counter the Russian threat.

“If it’s their intention to interfere, they’re going to find ways to do that,” Mr. Tillerson said in an interview last month with Fox News. “And we can take steps we can take, but this is something that once they decide they are going to do it, it’s very difficult to pre-empt it.”

This is a man who was the CEO of Exxon. If he knew that Shell was stealing his top geological talent, would he have said something like that? Presumably he can talk to the NSA about what they would suggest? WTF is wrong with this guy?

Amazingly, there is actually a person in the relevant job of under secretary for public diplomacy, who seems to have a different view from his boss.

“This funding is critical to ensuring that we continue an aggressive response to malign influence and disinformation,” Mr. Goldstein said.

I really hate the conclusion that so many folks at the top of our government are disloyal. But they keep pushing me toward it.

It might be worthwhile to frontpage a list of all the Russia-friendly things that they’ve done. There’s this, and, only this week, Trump’s total disinterest in, and active distraction from, Vladimir Putin’s threatening speech.

If you’ll supply them, I’ll write a post in a day or so. My excuse for crowdsourcing is that it’s allergy season, and I’ve got a very busy Monday and Tuesday.

One shitty thing the Florida DMV does is link license plate renewals to vehicle owners’ birthdays. The mister and I are both late February babies, and adding boat, trailer, cars, truck, motorcycles, etc., it’s a big bill. Happy fucking birthday!

Hubby and I were talking about the shitty vehicles we’re responsible for now, including the kiddo’s heap. That got us talking about all the old bombers we’ve owned over our lifetimes.

Here’s a partial list — we’re sure we’re forgetting some!

AMC Gremlin
Buick Estate wagon
Caddy (El Dorado)
Ford Maverick
Chevy 10 pickup truck (column shift!)
Chevy Vega
Mercury Gran Marquis
Dodge Colt
Ford Escort
Toyota Corolla
VW Rabbit
Honda Accord
Volvo 240
Toyota Camry
Honda CRV
Ford wagon
Mercury wagon
Ford Explorer
VW Beetle
Ford F-150 pickup
Ford F-250 pickup
Caddy de Ville

Jesus, no wonder the planet is choking to death. We’re sorry!

There are some shitty cars called out here. The thing I remember most about the Vega was buying oil in 5-gallon jugs. Don’t get me started on the fucking Gremlin, which was a cheesy, much-mocked 70s relic when I drove it in the 80s.

Care to name and shame your old hoopties (as my friend from Wisconsin calls them)? Or talk about whatever — open thread!

Ho-hum. I wake to another Post piece saying that now the Trump White House is really crazy pants! Until that motherfucker strokes out, Ryan and McConnell apologize to the nation for their perfidy and appoint Nancy Pelosi as regent, we gotta keep raising that dosh. Patriots, this here’s the fund that’s split between all eventual Democratic nominees in House districts currently held by Republicans.

Goal Thermometer

Bonus! Three (sic) people who don’t care about politics.

So chill, we’re lens-flaring!
