Another big victory for Democrats tonight:
Wisconsin Democrats declared victory on Tuesday night after Milwaukee Judge Rebecca Dallet won a bitter race for a seat on the state’s Supreme Court.
[..]With 72 percent of the precincts reporting, Dallet had 56 percent of the vote and Screnock had 44 percent.
Trump won Wisconsin by a point so this is a 13 point improvement on that. Pretty consistent with what we’re seeing in other races.
We’re going to have a chance to send Scott Walker home in November.
Villago Delenda Est
Scott Walker needs to be sent home.
In a box.

Thought Walker was term limited out this cycle.

Awesome! And thanks to the Wisconsinites (?) who provided analysis.
Adam L Silverman
Governor Hot Ham on Rolls should be fully puckered right about now.

Very good friend, Brian Ewert, is running in Wisconsin’s 7th District. He’s a doc who is focused on health care and I infrastructure. If he wins the primary, he’ll face Sean Duffy. He’s worth a look and some $$$$.
Doug
@NotMax: No. And at this point I’m taking odds on him trying figure out how to cancel the General Election as well as the two Specials I’m pretty certain the Lege is rushing into Madison to eliminate at this very moment.
Doug
@Adam L Silverman: I see you’ve encountered our colorful local cuisine. Fish Fry as well?
Omnes Omnibus
@Nelle: What is his home town? It tends to matter in the district.
Marcopolo
First time a liberal has been elected to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 23 years.
Omnes Omnibus
@Doug: You aren’t helping.
Marcopolo
@Doug: My understanding is the legislature has backed off after one or two other judges ruled the specials had to be held.
Doug!
@Nelle:
Thanks
Doug
@Omnes Omnibus: Tell me I’m wrong…
Omnes Omnibus
@Marcopolo: Are we discounting reelections? We seem to be.
Doug
@Marcopolo: Yeah. But these results are AWFUL for our states GOP prospects. And if there’s anything I’ve learned to expect from Fitzgerald, it’s not subtlety in the pursuit of power.
patrick II
@NotMax:
Walker is not term limited by law. During his last election he promised he would not run again — but it’s a Scott Walker promise.
Marcopolo
@Omnes Omnibus: Maybe. The piece just said first liberal elected…I’ll go back and reread the article.
NotMax
Wisconsin wakes up, decides Leinenkugel preferable to Blatz.
Omnes Omnibus
@Doug: You are wrong. I am sick and tired of liberals giving the fuck up. We just had a fucking victory, if you want to use it as a reason to despair, I can’t understand your way of thinking. WE JUST WON SOMETHING!!! Take the fucking win.
Amir Khalid
@Adam L Silverman:
I know Walker tried to avoid calling by-elections his party was going to lose, before the courts slapped him down. Is there any chance, however remote, that he might again invent some specious justification to avoid holding elections in November?
ETA: I see Doug was first in the thread to ask the question.
Adam L Silverman
@Nelle: Please let him know that if he needs anything pertaining to national security and foreign policy to reach out to me. It would be an honor and a privilege to help him out.
joel hanes
@NotMax:

New Glarus
And omnes, what’s wrong with a nice fish fry?
Omnes Omnibus
@Amir Khalid: No.
NotMax
@patrick II
Thank you. Vaguely recalled something in the zeitgeist related to his not being on the ballot.
Doug
I AM taking the fucking win. I’M tired of people who want to revel in a few big wins and not grind out election after election for the long haul. “Progressives” who think all they have to do is get Sanders or Warren in the Oval and then relax.
Plus humor, you twat.
Omnes Omnibus
@joel hanes: Where did I say a fish fry was wrong?
Adam L Silverman
@Doug: There is a place down here that I almost put out of business on an all you can eat fish and chip special night.
As for hot ham on rolls, I just remember that several articles were written about how Walker seems to tweet about his desire for them on a regular basis. The love that dared to speak its name…
Marcopolo
@Omnes Omnibus: Okay, the wording was first liberal to win an open seat—so I effed up the paraphrase.
Btw way, turnout in Dane County (Madison) where Dallet won 80% of the vote was over 30% (actually about what you’d see in a Nov mid-term).
Omnes Omnibus
@Doug: Is this a response to me?
Doug
@Amir Khalid: Nah. The furthest I think he’d REALLY go is choosing not to run after all rather than get destroyed.
Having said that, do I think the Lege people, especially that rat bastard Fitzgerald, will do everything they can think of to put their thumbs on the scale? Hell and yes.
rikyrah
Yeah ??
Another win ??
Adam L Silverman
@Amir Khalid: I’ll let OO provide greater local details, but my understanding is the courts have made it clear the elections have to happen, Walker has decided not to fight it further in the courts, and even GOP members in the Wisconsin legislature have begun expressing doubts about the wisdom of calling a special session to change the law to prevent them. Based on the reporting I’ve seen, the elections have been scheduled and will happen.
NotMax
@Amir Khalid
Realistically? No.
It would be a death knell for him and his party, not mention being overturned faster than one can say Bob La Follette.
Nelle
Thanks, Adam. What’s the best way to get him in contact with you?
He lives in Marshfield where he is a nephrologist at the Marshfield Clinic. He used to be the head of the Clinic. His first wife, who died of cancer, was my best friend and we were up there a lot through her illness. I quite like his current, and second, wife. We’ve all vacationed together.
Brian is smart, well-read and, like me, was raised Mennonite. Its part of how we see social justice issues, though neither of us are active anymore.

@Adam L Silverman:
I couldn’t fault a man for simple tastes, even if it’s for something that would never pass my own lips. But tweeting repeatedly about it is just weird.
Yutsano
@Adam L Silverman:
I should introduce you to my friend Colt. He is definitely high on the consumption of mass quantities list.
He’s also a powerlifter so…yeah.
Omnes Omnibus
@Marcopolo: That is fair. The court stayed as it was until Butler got appointed. He was an AA former public defender. His undergrad degree was from my alma mater. The right threw up Gableman and put shit loads of money on him. He won. He walked away and his seat is now open. Dallet just won it.
Adam L Silverman
@Nelle: I just sent you a test message to the email address you provided to comment here. Provided that’s legit, it should be in your in box.

I gave up trying to convince Wisconsin rethugs to vote for Dems… I just hit them with my best Debbie Downer impression and pretend to be one of them (or at least that I understand their
“economic insecurities”). Things like Trump lied… just look at his tax bill, all giveaways to the rich and a whole $18.00 in my paycheck. I also complain about his broken promises about medicare for all.
It seems to be working with many people I know. I know they aren’t ever voting Dem… I just want them to stay home.
Adam L Silverman
@Amir Khalid: He’s beyond weird and is fully in creepy territory.
Steeplejack
Just to be clear: is “Doug” in this thread the front-pager usually known as Doug!, DougJ, etc.?
frosty
@Adam L Silverman: Our high school cross country team did the same thing to the local Howard Johnson’s on Wednesday’s “all you can eat” fish fry night. The only statistic I can remember is on one occasion seven of us downing 70 orders of french fries and 10 bottles of ketchup. That poor restaurant!!!!
Adam L Silverman
@Yutsano: I’ve now cut, other than a cheat or two a week, all the refined sugars and carbs out of my diet. This includes potatoes. Sweet potatoes are okay though – they don’t mess me up. I was tired of being all bloated up.
And as long as I’m basically eating protein and non refined carbs I can do serious damage to an all you can eat special.
JCJ
I wonder if the snow in northern Wisconsin kept some old folks home who might have voted for Screnock. Whatever. I’ll take it. FWIW in my voting place there weren’t many people at 7 pm. That is when I usually go to vote and there is usually a line waiting for a ballot. There wasn’t snow at that time.
Adam L Silverman
@frosty: My late Dad, my brother, and I once went into the Sonny’s near USF. I was home visiting and we all went out. All you can eat ribs. I’m pretty sure the manager would have burned the place down for the insurance money if he could have.
NotMax
@frosty
Went to an all-you-can-eat king crab leg night at a nice restaurant once.
Initial serving was substantial. Waitress was astounded (her face really did go pale) when I requested seconds, as if no one had ever done so before, ever. Took maybe 15 minutes and she then presented me with a coffee saucer with two crab legs on it.
Great eatery otherwise BTW, now long gone. Had a massive 60-item salad bar.
frosty
@Adam L Silverman: The doc told me to cut the carbs. I looked at 40g/day and decided I couldn’t do it. Cut it in half to about 100 and got a good reading on the next visit. I can’t get enough calories on a strict protein diet. Plus, what, no red beans and rice????
Turns out I can give up the bagels and muffins and not miss them, but I liked my pear at lunch. It’s a luxury sweet to savor now.
Yarrow
This is excellent news. Celebrate each win. We will beat them. Back to work on the next race tomorrow.

@Nelle: I’m so glad to hear that. I went to high school in Tomahawk and remember how well David Obey represented the area. But I’m one of those who fled northern Wisconsin and have lived in Madison for the past 30 years. I would love to see your friend beat Duffy.

@frosty: There’s a difference between all carbs and refined carbs and refined sugars. I eat fruits and vegetables. I eat legumes and nuts. I also eat rice and sweet potatoes. I eat pinhead oatmeal.
Nelle
I am nearly hopelessly addicted to sugar. Trying so hard to abandon that – I did it once and got myself in more reasonable condition. Gained it back whenever I came back to the US. It is everywhere here. Constant temptation. And I dealt with my dismay at being back in the US with stress eating. But it just has to stop. It’s affecting my health too much to be this heavy.
frosty
@Adam L Silverman: That’s a reasonable way to go. I’ve got a compromise where I can have something like that one meal a day (even a bagel!) if I’m careful on the other two. Not too bad, really.
NotMax
@Adam L. Silverman
There’s a crappy local restaurant chain here called Zippy’s.
Sadly, no pinhead oatmeal on the menu.

@Omnes Omnibus:
You didn’t say a fish fry was wrong.
I misthreaded.
You replied to Doug with “you aren’t helping”, and the Doug comment most immediately above that was about fish-fry.
I am revealed as an amateur and bumbling jackal.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
when I decided to cut back on refined sugars and carbs I was surprised at 1) how easy it was to give up soda (from four or five a week and I don’t really miss it) and 2) how much I ate, and loved, white bread. Potatoes remain a struggle
Adam L Silverman
@frosty: You have to figure out how to make it work for you. The day versus night difference of how I feel without all the refined stuff in my diet is worth it. And if I have a really specific craving, then I have that for my cheat.
Adam L Silverman
@NotMax: Someone should get about fixing that.

There was some good news from up here in Anchorage AK too. Progressive Dem mayor re-elected by 20 points and a bathroom bill was defeated by 12. First time we did mail in ballots. I really liked it. I pay attention to issues as much as anyone, but I’ll admit that I sometimes go into the booth and have no idea what some obscure proposal is or all the various board seats. Our elections are technically non-partisan, so you don’t even see party affiliation. This gave me time to study every prop and every candidate. Then throw it in the mail or drop it in one of all the drop boxes scattered throughout town. It increased voter turnout a lot. 30+% doesnt seem high but it 18% in the last municipal election.
john b
surprised you didn’t put a fundraising plug, because we all know you got money on your mind and you can never get enough.
Ken B
I wonder if this election may have had something to do with Walker’s decision not to appeal to the WI Supreme Court to try to avoid the special elections? It looked like he was going to, and then he didn’t.
I don’t think the Rethugs in Wisconsin wanted to get those hard left wingers stirred up and motivated to vote in the election for the state Supreme Court. Better to lose two lege seats for a short time than to lose a vote on the SC for ten years.
No way is Walker smart enough to see that, but I think his owners are.
