… The show is called Pet Shenanigans based in Busch Gardens amusement park in Williamsburg, Virginia in the US.

The trained animals were once shelter animals who were rescued by their now-trainers and have become the new-born stars of the popular show…

    I’ve been coming in at the tail-end of the threads (but one) all weekend. So… Open Thread/Pet Rescue: reposting from below.
    I’ve always said my next cat would be a dog. But I’ve never had one and didn’t grow up with them. Well, there was the Irish terrier that my dad got us not long before moving out. That went well. When Alice goes to the great beyond I’ve decided start by fostering. Could be another few years, but I’m starting to see it.

    Terrible news from the cycling world.

    Belgian cyclist Michael Goolaerts has died aged 23 after a crash in Paris-Roubaix.

    The Veranda’s Willems-Crelan rider fell on the second set of cobbles in the one-day classic in northern France.
    He suffered cardiac arrest and was airlifted to hospital in Lille but died at 21:40 BST on Sunday.

    “It is with unimaginable sadness that we have to communicate the passing of our rider and friend Michael Goolaerts,” read a team statement.

    Horrid. If you’ve never see it Paris-Roubaix is a brutal race a good portion of which is on the cobbles noted above, using racing bikes with skinny tyres and no suspensions. It’s one of the early-season warmups before the tour season begins and has probably been run for a century or more.

    Do you know people who routinely use the wrong, albeit close, word? There is a person in my life who often refers to a mutual friend’s “prostrate cancer.” She also talks about the “internment” of her parents’ ashes.

    I have gently corrected her, once, on each of these, and always make a point of using the proper terms when they come up in conversation. Don’t want to make a huge deal over what may be the oral equivalent of a typo, but I think she really doesn’t know and it drives me absofuckinglutely CRAZY!!

    Are there people you know who do this kind of thing? How do you handle it? DO you handle it, or do you just ignore it and let it go?

    @chris: The pet shelter I visited a few times in the SF area had a large room where the kitties could mingle and I never saw the cats fighting. Usually they were sleeping, sometimes in pairs or piles, or doing other cat things. I was amazed by this and wondered if they were all drugged. .

    I am impressed with the cats’ compliance — who knew they could be trained like that.

    But halfway through they started reminding me of the squirrels gamboling over my roof inbetween chewing holes in the fascia — there are now three and a half holes, two of which go all the way through.

    We think the critter catchers got them all, a nursing mother and her youngsters, but we have to wait a few more days to be sure. I think I have a touch of PTSD from checking the traps for their bodies.

    The mere thought of impeachment could energize Trump supporters who may otherwise be disinclined to vote in the midterm elections without him on the ballot, supporters of the strategy say.

    “I can’t even imagine the Democrats would go there,” said Mark Lundberg, the former chairman of the Sioux County Republican committee in Iowa. “Impeachment for what? For being rude to them? That would be so outrageous.”

    And to those voters in the political center who may be uneasy with, or simply exhausted by, his tumultuous administration, the possibility of an even more chaotic 2019 in Washington is unappealing.

    Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, a member of the House Republican leadership, predicted that the possibility of impeachment would divide the hard left from the broader political mainstream.

    “It separates their base from reasonable, rational people that decide elections,” said Mr. McHenry, noting that this bloc of the electorate does not “want to put people in power that are going to create complete chaos and in essence shut down any potential legislative progress.”

    But the mere fact that Republicans are talking by early spring about running on an impeachment threat reveals the depth of their challenge going into this fall’s election. The first midterm campaign of a new administration is typically difficult for the president’s party. But the tempestuous Mr. Trump has compounded the Republicans’ difficulties by generating an unending stream of made-for-TV controversies that overshadow their policy achievements and the health of the economy.

    There are voices in the Republican Party who believe that it is too soon to sound the alarm, and that doing so will come off as overly panicked. Indeed, what is striking about the politics of impeachment is that both parties are divided over how to navigate the issue in the midterm campaign.

    Polls show most voters are not supportive of impeachment at the moment, but if Mr. Trump were to fire the White House special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, the country would become about evenly divided on the question.

    In January, 66 House Democrats, over a third of the caucus, voted to begin impeachment proceedings. That was eight more than the total number who voted for a similar measure in the House a month earlier.

    The Democratic leadership, though, has sought to tamp down these impulses. They believe Republicans are setting a trap and are irritated that the billionaire donor Tom Steyer, who recently said he wants to host a series of primary debates this year, is trumpeting the issue. These Democrats argue that the party needs to focus on a substantive agenda and assure voters that they will exercise sober and reasonable oversight of Mr. Trump.

    On Thursday, the House Democratic campaign organization released a memo based on an internal poll that urged candidates to “express a willingness to work with the president when his agenda might help the district.”

    “If impeachment becomes a political tool instead of the end result of a credible investigation, then you are as guilty as Trump, in some ways, of taking a hammer blow to institutions,” said David Axelrod, former President Barack Obama’s onetime chief strategist, adding that it would also create risks in swing districts. “To say I’m for impeachment come hell or high water is to promise chaos.”

    And Democratic lawmakers say they are wise to the bait that Mr. Trump is placing before them when he invokes Ms. Waters, an outspoken black woman whose jeremiads against the president conservative media outlets delight in amplifying.

    “They’re trying to encourage us to be more out front on impeachment so then they can use that to rev up their base and say, ‘That’s all the Democrats care about,’” said Representative Dina Titus of Nevada, a political-science professor by training.

    Last week, America Rising, a Washington-area candidate-tracking and opposition-research firm that assists Republicans, sent out a fund-raising email that read, “Right now the only thing standing between the president and the Democrats’ underhanded impeachment attempts is the Republican majority in the House fighting to defend our president.”

    Or as Representative Sean Duffy of Wisconsin, a Republican, put in last week in a talk radio interview: “Do you think that the far-left Resist movement base of the Democrat Party would accept anything other than impeachment?”

    My boss once thanked me for saying ”moot”. Apparently a lot more people have mute points than moot ones.

    A Greek friend who wrote and spoke pretty much flawlessly idiomatic English would always say “down to the road” instead of “down the road”, but as it was not his language I think he could be forgiven.

    Was acting in a play way back when. One night came to a particularly expressive section of dialogue. The emphatic line was “You’re grinding your heel in my raw soul!”

    Awash with all the poignancy and tortured emotion could muster, out of my mouth erupted, “You’re grinding your seal in my raw hole!”

    Brought the house down. Luckily it was during a rehearsal shortly before opening night so there were no paying customers.

    Still have the little stuffed seal the director gave me at the post-closing night party.   :)

    Not really. Heading into the mid terms, most voters would rate local issues as more important, and maybe controlling Trump at the congressional level rather than impeaching him.

    And although everyone “just knows” that Trump is crooked, actual evidence of an impeachable offense is rather thin.

    Lastly, the GOP has weakened the idea of impeachment by using it against Bill Clinton and by invoking it all the time with Obama and Hillary Clinton.

    I know people who pronounce “moot” correctly, but spell it as “mute.”

    My working theory is that people don’t read as much as in the past, or don’t read books where the word “moot” is used, and so they have tried to correct it (spelling or pronunciation).

    I think I first heard the word in middle school, when we had a moot Court about some social issue of the day, and the word stuck in my mind.

    This was in the day when my favorite drink was rute beer.

    Open Thread news: I said goodbye to my sweet old dog Theo today. He was nearly 15, and has been my faithful companion since he was 4 months old. He’s been sick for a while, but this morning he was in a lot of pain, unable even to stand. One of our local vets makes euthanasia house calls. His passage was gentle. I am deeply sad, but I have no doubt that it was the right time.

    I will miss him terribly.

Manos had forgotten more about English grammar & vocabulary than most Murkins ever knew but his accent was so thick even I’d have trouble understanding him for 20-30 sec when he came to my office.

    When he dropped by he’d always start by saying, “Hi! What are you doing?” And I would always tell him what I was doing…until I took a course in modern Greek & discovered their equivalent of “how are you?” is not Pos eesthe? (the literal translation) but Ti kanete? (informally, Ti kanis?) – literally, what are you doing? I stopped boring him after that…

    The fact remains that nothing has been produced which supports impeachment in the eyes of many people polled. And Mueller is still investigating.

    When the charges were unveiled against Bill Clinton, most people saw them as total bullshit, which they were. His popularity actually increased.

    People with impeachment fever about Trump need to sit down and relax.

    Some participants brought along guns to rallies that were held Saturday in South Burlington, Barre and Bennington.

    Pro Rights 2A organizer Christopher Covey said it’s not the gun that people should fear – “it’s the gun in the wrong hand.”

    In chess, why would you move a piece before it is needed?

    There is no surrender when there are more substantive issues that can be used directly against Republican challengers in the mid terms, and indirectly against Trump.

    If impeachment might fire up Trump voters and bring them out to vote, it makes more sense to focus on issues that undercut their enthusiasm, and areas where other groups of voters are passionate to get something positive done.

    And if Democrats don’t regain a majority in the House, at least, impeachment would be a non-issue.

    Those are called eggcorns. They heard word and were uncertain and substitute in something they know. On twitter I saw somebody refer to F1 drivers as “pre-Madonnas “. Google eggcorn and you’ll find tons of them.

    @SiubhanDuinne: Depending on the person, they can drive you nuts, or be just an endearing quirk – well, ime.

    A dear friend was the only other RL person I know of who used “Also Too” on a regular basis. She was as brilliant as La Palin is dumb (and pretty much opposite on the rest of other personality traits too), so we always kind of enjoyed it when she used it.

    If it’s someone he likes, Mr S will ask how the mis-speaker is with being corrected, and then add, something like “I’d always prefer to be corrected than keep saying “x” wrong.” It usually works, with the kind of person he’s willing to say it to.

    @Mike J: We call them Sheppardisms. He’s another dear friend, but in his case we just smile and nod – if we can figure them out. Or if we can’t, bth.

    * I think the slightly off word recall, when frequent and longstanding, is a congenital memory glitch. It’s just the brain retrieving from one spot over from correct. People can’t help it and it’s not about being stupid, or having any control, your brain is just recalling the wrong information. I do it with names all the time. I end up saying to the person, “ Your name isn’t Karen” and they will tell me it’s Carla. Always close but not right. Shaming does no good, truly.

    * I was in a production of Much Ado About Nothing where the actor playing Benedict slipped and said “your brother the bastard is Fred from Messina.” This caused all sorts of mirth. Unfortunately, it was too late to add Fred to the list of characters in the program. (The bastard was Don John, and he was fled from Messina.)

    * Lizzy, many condolences. Never easy to do the right thing.

They always said there were Democrats involved as well, but I don’t remember any being publicly named. Funny that.
